Great fun following you on the trail. What a positive attitude you have. I've been backpacking for many years and now have the joy of taking my grandkids into the wilderness. I hiked up to Desolation Valley on this trail in the late 1950s with my late-50s mother and two of her college friends. There were no cabins along the trail beside Upper Echo Lake at that time to my recollection. I recall vividly meeting a much older man, about my present age of late 70s, almost running up the trail, and wondered if I could be doing that at his age. My last hike to Desolation was in 1982, plus one to Eagle Falls Lake (above Emerald Bay) in the early 2000s. As in post to the previous leg, I also vividly recall the odor of the wildflowers. Lots of mint-like smells. I do wish one could bottle that.

Clueless lowlanders speeding in and out of the mountains endangering everyone in their path should be ashamed of themselves. It happens constantly on every Sierra pass and wildlife pay the ultimate price. Also, the campers who lost their food to the bear need to know that they have done irreparable harm and altered that bear's natural behavior forever. The time has come to mandate bear canisters in every part of the Sierra to protect the wilderness experience.

I did the PCT in 2016. By far the parts near SLT had the rudest, least experienced hikers. People shouted insults at me from cars, no one knew hiking etiquette (uphill has right of way), and overall ridiculous backpackers with gigantic antique framed packs. Maybe it's just the destination's repute for gambling/partying in the summer that leads to this. Beautiful area but lame humans.
