Mr toads is my go to trail 😁 I love how technical that trail is, and it is easily one of the best MTB trails in Tahoe!

Mr. Toads Wild Ride is one of the most epic mountain biking trails in the south shore... it is absolutely a BLAST to ride or run down, but there are certainly some sections where you have to watch yourself or your footing can get a bit dicey! Certainly worth checking out if I’m the area 👌🏻👌🏻

I’m binge-watching your TRT videos (they are GREAT), and I just realized I was backpacking Fallen Leaf to Aloha to Gilmore that weekend. We also got stuck in the thunderstorm on Friday and it was terrifying being on the edge of the mountain!

Enjoying your videos and storytelling. Wondering when and how you’ll show (and deal) with the fires and smoke. We’ve been mtb’ers and living in Tahoe for 30+ years and consider ourselves responsible, polite and sensitive to other trail users. Thanks to a new dog (a Springer Spaniel like your horse friend), my wife and I have been hiking the PCT, JMT and TRT a ton this summer. Our bikes miss us. As hikers we definitely feel vulnerable when bikers ride too close and at high speed. With the massive spike in people seeking the outdoors (including campers, hikers and back packers) there are tons of people without basic common knowledge. We always clean up after our dog but also don’t enjoy horse poop in the middle of the trail regardless if it’s cleaner, somehow. It’s always been that way tho.

Thanks so much!! Thankfully, we beat the fires (barely). I also don't enjoy horse poop, but I was researching on why owners don't need to pick it up like dog poop and I found that interesting! Also, I want to try mountain biking one day!

Love your videos and a avid mtn biker . I ride Tahoe often and always slow down and or stop for hikers . Toads wild ride is a legal trial and is maintained by TAMB . A volunteer - driven nonprofit organization that builds , maintains , and advocates for multi-use trails in the lake Tahoe area .

The Toad Trail was probably an outlaw MTB Trail, not FS system trail. Sign was cute. You are going to thrashed, or dissed by a few for saying anything negative about MTB’s but you did include a clip of a respectful rider, and made the point about the majority that you encountered. Our companion animals have been with us on trails for thousands of years; dog, llamas, horses, and goats. I do like the rules in my local National Forests that they need to be 100-300’ back from water. Wonderful story and shared experience. This series has been nice.

And yet, you did put Chip's butt on the video, because of course you did. It would not have been Whimsical to leave it out. All that aside, this part of the TRT looks really pretty, even if it might be a bit more desert-like. I also love those western rainstorms -- 30-45 minutes and you are completely dry another 30 minutes later. Probably half the rain didn't make it down before evaporating. This is a great series, Starburst, keep the videos coming!

I was in Laguna Mountains hiking and the trail was infested with bikes,,,, like you say most know how to be cool but those few that aren't deserve a stick in the spokes. Mr. Toads would probably be a great bike trail and not so for walking I bet :

#7 already? Time fly's . . . I always take pictures of interesting rocks and twisted trees as well, I never get tired of it, they seem fascinating to me for some reason. I'm always thinking about the geology as well more than anything else. I wish I could be there now but I'm waiting for eye surgery in a few days then have to wait two weeks more . . .O get mad at Mtn Bikers that do that as well and I'm sometimes tempted to let them accidentally bump into my elbow but I've restrained myself so far LOL

Another comment from the distant age of long ago. When I was hiking in the Desolation Wilderness in the 1950s and 60s, everybody just filled their WWII canteens with water from the streams, not worrying about animal contamination. And we never got sick. What about today? Do you decontaminate your water now? I am looking forward to your Freel Peak hike, if that happened. I climbed it in 1962 with a coworker from the summer resort where I worked, starting off from road just a mile or so below Star Lake.

I love Freel Peak, too. I have been following TRT hikers and they don't seem to go there. Hiking along the TRT, then to go up up up to 10,000 + Freel Pk always felt so surreal to me with its red barrenness. I always got a Mars vibe. But they made a good move of not doing it with that thunderstorm.

Wilderness etiquette dictates that should camp 50 -100 ft from lakes or streams. So many lakes shore are denude of vegetation. If you look at the forest service regs for that area they state no horses tethered within 200ft of lakes or streams. Mtn. bikers aren't the only users of the wilderness that don't follow the rules.

I'm a mountain biker and this behavior drives me nuts. We call those people stravassholes. They use strava and compete against themselves and others to beat their times, regardless of who is on the trail. Feel free to shove a trekking pole thru the front spokes.

I kinda hate to keep harping on the same subject, but Dyanna is lucky she hasn't lost her food. If she did would you share your cheese? Ha Ha. Seriously though, putting her food bag on the ground under a rock is bad form. Hang it or use a canister. I don't know where you ladies are from, but here in California you are taking chances any time you don't use some form of bear canister. Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks all require canisters and will fine you if you don't use them. Also not all canisters on the market are approved for use. The BV500 is approved. I hate to keep being so negative. I am enjoying your videos! Hike on!

Well, the probably is that bear canisters aren't required on the TRT, which I think they should be! But I do agree with you, which is why I brought my bear can even though "I didn't have to". But I would fully support the Desolation Wilderness enforcing bear canisters!

But to add, aside from the areas on the PCT where bear canisters were required, I left my food bag out every night on the ground and nothing ever happened. I was lucky, but the one time I have hung food before it got into. I don't even think hanging works always. Critters can crawl and shimmy wherever they like it seems. Nimble little things!

Downhill bikers who treat the trail like it's their own personal race track need to understand they are liable if they collide with and injure other trail users. Bike manufacturers engineer bikes to be bigger and faster (and battery powered) in rough terrain and it's a recipe for disaster as trails become more crowded. As a hiker and mountain biker, when I'm heading downhill on foot or bike, I stop or slow way down and move to the side for anyone going uphill. Also, if there is poor visibility ahead, downhill riders should assume that someone is present at the blind corners.

Just like if you were driving a windy road that is only 1 vehicle at a time. You don't zoom down and around blind curves. You slow down as ensure your front is free of vehicles.

Those mountain bikers are a major pain....especially if youre riding horses....they are almost silent and often they come around a corner hauling azz....ive been horseback b4 when the horse all of a sudden sees movement in front of them...Jen...you wouldnt believe how fast a 1000 lb horse can move sideways 20 ft....allot of times they "spook" sideways so fast the rider is left on the ground !! I think the most disrepectful group ive seen are "some" dirt bike riders...often pass you hauling azz catch a gear as they pass and kick up dust and dirt as they go by....theyre pathetic....that happens allot 4 wheeling in my Jeep...great video burst...stay safe out there !! 🐴

The Tahoe Rim Trail is a wonderful hike and I’ve done it twice. The second time was distinctly more populated with mountain bikers. In the 165 mile hike I encountered probably 100 bike riders, exactly two of which pulled over to let me pass. Clearly not all bike riders are aggressive but it only takes one to injure a hiker. So for me, it’s just too dangerous so I stay off of trails that are “mixed use.”
