Congrats on your journey! I laughed so hard when you realized you took that wrong turn up to Freel... hiking that with a runners pack is tough enough, but with a hikers pack that is a serious mile climb! Well done 🙏🏻👍🏻

Freel Peak is a fun one. 1200' of gain in 1 mile.

Yep, that is what it felt like. I did it with my backpack on the whole way like an idiot.

What is the urgency to get to the Desolation Wilderness?
@susannesadventurejournal19205 жыл бұрын
I don't think urgent is the right word, but it was on my mind a lot. It was going to be one of the most beautiful sections of the trail, as well as the most challenging. It also had some stringent permitting restrictions, and I could only enter on a specific day, something that is hard to plan out several days in advance. I ended up constantly checking my pace/distance to make sure I hit that permit window correctly.

Kinda like the issue of camping in the Grand Canyon

I'm assuming you carry a GPS. You ought to know about hikearizona.com which is a website that contains hikes, descriptions, photosets, & downloadable GPS tracks in all 48 states. Here is a link to the entire TRT on hikearizona.com: hikearizona.com/map.php?GPS=9231 Having the track in your GPS B4 you start on any hike will help keep you on the trail you want. I'm envious of your ability to hike 20 miles a day, a distance I've NEVER managed in one day. 10 miles a day is about my limit; I'm 75 years old, however, even when I was a boy the most I ever hiked in one day was 14 miles & I was only carrying water.

Thanks for the website link, I appreciate looking up more sources. It use the Guthook/Atlas guide apps. The exist for most main trails. They have waypoints for most major features, especially water sources. The most helpful features about that app are that it will show you how many miles you are from a selected waypoint and that it has a comment section that other hikers do a good job of updating, especially for water source conditions.
