Had a similar situation with my Wing Chun teacher. First he was a good martial artist but had holes in his game. So Sifu tried to lock up in a wrestling clinch with me(I wrestled in HS). He told me to resist and not let him throw me. This was in front of a crowd and I meekly protested. However he insisted we locked up. So we locked up and I resisted. Sifu tried over and over. This is the answer I was looking for, the random dude from the crowd obviously knew the form for pushing hands as you can see them follow it - while raising their hands. Many don't understand this "dance" because they have never "pushed hands" before. The close proximity and slow movement aligned with your partner is only half of the exercise, wherein strike opportunities are traded. Just because the random got a few strikes doesn't mean the master failed. As you said "mastery" in Tai Chi (from my understanding) is that of sensing and perceiving - allowing "energy out".

In my humble opinion, 99% of people who practice Tai Chi don’t do it for the martial fighting aspect it so to find someone who can actually use it is rare indeed, most people who say they can are deluded or frauds. It’s martial side has become now just pushing practice / push hands which is the first stage in learning how to fight with Tai Chi. Unfortunately that’s as far as most so called masters delve into it. Done properly it’s no different to any other form or martial arts, just rare to find a teacher who does that.
@LunaticReason2 жыл бұрын
I have seen and experienced some legit applications of Tai chi although I am not saying it would be a tremendous asset in a fight. Anyways here are a couple of people of practicing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqGXmZlvm82tqZI People stumble back and sometimes takes awhile for them to regain their balance which looks like flying back while others they regain balance immediately. The push is simply knowing someone's weight distribution and breaking their contact to the ground abruptly. A demonstration of short power. ie what you see in a one inch punch. I doubt anyone of them is a master but here is a clip of someone pushing their partner and "Flying" back maybe not as far in your clip. In the case of your video there is a high probability that the person being pushed was trying to shine on the master and play for the camera to make him look good. However the person in mine I doubt did it for the same reason so either they where pushed with such force or they are completely exaggerating buy why? It could even be on a subconscious level reacting in such a manner idk. I think its something similar to how people practice in Aikido. It's easier to go with a fall or throw than risk injury resisting so they've built up this habit in responding in that manner. Works better when there isn't much opposition to what you are doing or the factors in a fight are in your favor. That is usually vs someone surprised or inexperienced in fighting but roles reversed getting attacked by someone who is trained is a big disadvantage. You can't expect moves to always be perfectly executed. Often they will fail because that is the nature with fights. Its like failed judo throw or bjj submission. The problem is people treat tai chi like some magical power which it isn't its just a skill vs someone else skill to defend.

The form he demonstrates looks like Sun style, not Wu style. Being a lineage holder or taught by specific teachers is not a qualification of ability. However, it's sometimes used to try and market a particular school or method of training. Unfortunately, just like any discipline of skill, there are genuine and not so genuine practitioners. Many of the genuine ones will not be found on KZbin or issuing challenges to other people - it's social media, so all kinds of rubbish is out there. That's not to say there aren't some good examples of real skills and accomplished practitioners, but better research is needed to find them.

As an aging fighter (43 y/o) who's cross trained a lot, some tai chi principles are really helpful in a fight (relaxation amidst intensity, distributing weight down to make me harder to throw, etc...), and tai chi has remained an awesome exercise for join strength and micro-muscles that don't get hit in weight training. As with most of your vids, pressure testing is key, and if you're just using one system to fight, you're gonna have a hard time.

It's the old story, the more these "master's" play with their compliant students, the more their real combat skills are blunted ...

I like tai chi for health reasons and breathing. If you're calm and fight, it's an edge. Take the being calm and then learn boxing, grappling, and weapons.

Unpopular opinion: for an uncooperative demonstration, it's a fair representation. Obviously you're not going to bounce your opponent out the same way you would somebody offering you their structure. How well he would have done against strikes is another thing, but the basic point is it's tough to fight me when you're already fighting for your balance. I think what this guy showed was a reasonable display of manipulating the balance of an uncooperative opponent.

Western scientific approach (MMA) vs. Eastern obscure mysticism --> Xu Xiadong vs. Legendary Tai Chi Masters ;)
@combatsportsarchive76322 жыл бұрын
Dude, the westerners weren't the only ones who pioneered MMA. There are similar groups outside the western world like Shooto, Vale Tudo and Daido Juku Kudo since the 20th century. Check out a video titled "MMA in 1990 July 9, 3 years before UFC 1 [Shooto Japan]" for example.

@@combatsportsarchive7632 OK, touche. But I wasn't saying about Western NATIONS, but the perspective, the attitude towards Martial Arts. I meant the (typical for the West) scientific approach vs. a more obscure mysticism which is more linked to the East.

Do you actually believe those people who "masters"?

It's quite obvious that the "random stranger" has good taiji skills, which Sun Jian Guo respectfully recognized.

I don't know what did you see. I see a man who grabs master hands every time when he should be pushed. This way, nobody can't be pushed.

I love martial arts .. never had the chance to practice honestly.. I also love how you always expose the bulshido .. i mean those so called masters .. watching them is worse than watching a bad movie

This video is ridiculous. The video footage didn't prove anything against the Tai Chi Master.

Slightly misleading video.. im sorry to say. The gentle man who stood up has martial arts experience... So not true. The only thing i can say is that its a piuty the students help the teacher so much... It must be more real... But so be it .. thats his story. This makes no proof on Taichi working or not working... Dont be fooled.

Ok...anyone can find things to discredit so, show us the other side....guys who can and then there's, are YOU a martial artist🥊? Can you fight🥊? If not, don't you think you should actually be SOMEONE 👑or do SOMETHING with yourself to get SOME KIND OF CREDIBILITY 🥇🥉 rather than spending your time dragging people down? At least they're investing their time PRODUCTIVELY, even if they're unsuccessful. HONESTLY, seems pretty negative petty and Aweful small. It's not like YOU'RE stepping up and challenging these guys, YOURSELF. 😱 THAT, AT LEAST, would be SOMETHING rather than this armchair warrior thing you're doing. What a sad little world and existence some "live in" to actually support, listen or watch this channel...juuuusssst saying, bro. 🙇

Aikido (marginally useful MA) sandan here. I decided to implement my "internal power" with Tai Chi. While pushing hands, the deputy instructor pissed me off and I kicked his butt real hard. So he went crying to the chief instructor who challenged me. As the top dog had biceps the size of my thighs ... I decided to bow out. 🤣🤯

The reason students always go flying in these kind of demonstrations is that they’re cooperating with the teacher by not adjusting their stance to regain their balance like a normal person would if they felt off-balance. Which means once they do lose their footing they have to make these big backward leaps to regain their balance. If you leaned back further and further and waited for the last possible moment to correct your posture to avoid falling the same thing would happen to you.

That "really big Tai Chi master" in the momentary part of the clip, is Lee Scheele, a two time heavyweight push hands champion. I've touched hands with him at his Meetup practice. He's 75 now, and still very good at what he does. But no, push hands is not fighting, but I believe it can be a good skill to add into other training. I hope I can find the full clip of Lee vs the wrestler.

At 1:54 he actually gets him. If you are expecting tai ji magic, it is pretty easy to nullify - like this man and others have proven. If you had some tai ji techniques mixed with some direct strikes - it can catch you off guard and be quite useful. But the internal aspect of martial arts takes a long time to develop and today’s masters might not even have them at combat level proficiency. The internal kung fu does lend itself to health, especially for those that have lost some of their vigor.

Seems like the random guy from the audience actually has got combat history and has studdied an art. So not entirely a true example against a person who hasnt studdied a martial art... the guy with glasses has you can just see it. But yes sadly, the students should not be helping the teacher as much as they have clearly. But for sure the guy who came up has got skills already in a art.

You saying "Wu" is so weird. 😆😆😆😆 And "Pushing Hands" is nothing more than child stuff. Pure waste of time. Well deserved the exposed that this "master" suffered.

I'm not saying this guy's techniques are real, I don't know, but it is similar to something I've done in the past. But I'm also a big guy, 6'4' 200 pounds plus when I did it and this thing I use to do would be to tap an opponent quickly with my palms under your clavicles to offset an opponent's balance then I would plant myself and lift them as I pushed them as hard as I could, throwing them backwards. I've thrown a buddy of mine pretty far back like that when he was training with me but I was putting a lot more into it. This guy's technique requires a willing opponent to show it, mine you don't.

1.53 When his opponent push back, a . . . (what's the word?) Tai Chi master, would move & let him pass . . even pull opponent to the ground. Tai Chi is . . soft art, it didn't . . force thing to happen. He might be a genuine Tai Chi teacher, but here, he force thing instead of using the art. It's like he forgot to applied the principal. He need refreshment on sparring train. Badminton or tennis, you watch and strike when it's the right moment, not before, not after. That moment only as long as a blink of eyes.

This is not fake. It is called "Elastic Force Chi Kung" and it works quite well if you're not expecting it. Like anything else, if you're expecting it, it can be defeated.
@Fritz9992 жыл бұрын
I like to see situations of that kind. In practically all martial arts exhibitions it is a given that the "lesser" partner is a willing and compliant partner. Usually there is no quick fix for non compliance or active resistance. To be clear about this, for a clean and clear exhibition, some compliance is helpful. But a master ought to be able to overcome none compliance or resistance. If not capable of overcoming, do not ever do exhibitions of techniques. It makes the so-called Master look supremely silly.

Hi Jerry, what part of the world are you in? I’d like to put you together with one of my taichi buddies, if possible. To see how you would do pushing with one of them. All safe and fun, but you could be surprised. Let me know.
