Yeah, I needed some Pointers because I'm gonna start working on the 42 form and I want to compete possibly next year. So I'm preparing myself and watching your video. Help me out a download on the steppings and all that good stuff.

If there was an actual target, would the grip tighten upon impact or is the hand to remain relaxed throughout a cut.

That's a good question. I haven't done much cutting or thrusting with a live blade Jian. I have however done structural testing with a wooden one, in which a partner grips and pushes on the sword tip to find any weaknesses in my alignment. I've also done a fair bit of striking various surfaces with a live stick (as in the Filipino martial arts) and use the same grip. What I can say is that the grip of the pinky and ring finger should be strong. That's where the vast majority of your grip strength is. I would have to rewatch my video (it's been a while) but I believe I say that. The middle finger grips less strongly, and the thumb and pointer finger are fairly relaxed (still gripping, but not squeezing). My tip about not squeezing with all four fingers and thumb is about having elasticity in the grip. It isn't loose perse, just not rigid. It's worth mentioning that the Jian is primarily a thrusting weapon, and the cuts it uses are generally slashes and draw cuts rather than hacking cuts. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching.
