Cane Master's President, and Sr. Master of the Cane (ACSD), H Keith Melton explains the Windshield Wiper defensive movement and demonstrates its use with a training dummy. It is excellent for "clearing space" and keeping multiple attackers at bey.

I think that you should discuss the reaction of handling the cane after a direct strike to the assailant's ear. A follow through after hitting a tennis ball is not an example of real life.

The homeland what I'm loving are the wooden Harz Mountains in middle Germany. Here we older foresters, hunters and lumbermen using a traditionel cane, made from ash, oak hazelnut or chestnut with a handling grip from the lower horn base of an red deer stag or bull elk (bull elk, I think in your language). This cane measures from floor untill your own hipbone, diameter nearly 1.18 - 1.57 inches, an iron tip on the lower side. For hunting and aiming so called ,,Mountain staff", iron tip, reaching from floor to ear. I can tell you: Both are very nice, easy to make, very very helpful in hiking, camping, hunting and self defense too. Every opponent, human or animal, thinks three times about agresssion against you.

Mr. Melton, how much harder is this stroke when the dummy is some inches taller than the cane user? My common sense--not always an accurate guide--tells me it could be quite a bit harder . . . for ME, as a somewhat minimally trained cane user.

@@CaneMasters-WalkingCanesThanks very much for your kind reply. I think I asked my question badly because I'm not concerned with pace, rhythm. etc. Please let me try again. I'm only 5"5" tall. So, to reach the imaginary apple on the bad guy's head I must move in close and raise the cane at a steep angle. Only then does the cane reach high enough to touch the apple. I worry about being so close to the bad guy--easily within his reach. It seems to me that the bad guy could disrupt my stroke in any number of ways. The cane will be getting close to vertical and I won't be able to put much power into the stroke. Am I making better sense this time? If so, am I merely imagining the problems or do you agree that they're real? If you do agree, what can I do to prevent the bad guy from messing me up while I'm close in with a near vertical cane? Thanks very muchly!

@@CaneMasters-WalkingCanes I was illustrating the tension level of using a spinning heel kick on a target held by a Hapkido Grandmaster. I agree that the spinning heel kick is not always the best option, especially after a certain age or physical ability. I just believe that your demonstration using your son was probably giving you a taste of what William Tell must have felt. Glad you didn't go through with it. Good video though. Keep it up.

Yahshua - you know Him as Jesus - was born to a virgin, turned water to wine, taught, healed the sick, raised the dead, casted out demons, walked on water, calmed the storm, and fed a crowd of thousands with a few fish and a few loaves of bread, among many other things. He was killed on the cross as payment for the sins of all mankind, three days later He rose from the dead. Forty days later He ascended into heaven where He sits at the right hand of the Father. He is returning very soon, but before He does, Satan, the devil, is coming to pretend to be Jesus/God (2 Thessalonians 2:1-4). Satan is an angel, and he will have certain supernatural powers with which to try to fool everyone. He will, for example, be able to make fire come down from heaven in the sight of men. He will only be on earth a short time before the real King of Kings, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, returns. When the real Jesus comes we will all be transformed into our spiritual bodies at the same moment. Jesus came in the flesh to offer forgiveness of sins and eternal life to anyone who believes and calls on His precious name! if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. - Romans 10:9 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me. For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. - Matthew 26:6-13 Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.. To anoint your self, the sick, or a building for spiritual protection: Get a small bottle of olive oil and pour off a small amount into a smaller vessel like a vial or baby food jar. Use the rest of the bottle for cooking. Ask the Lord to bless your vial of oil in Jesus name. Anoint yourself with the oil by placing a dab of oil on tip of finger and touch it to your forehead, and ask the Lord to bless you/heal you. Place a dab of oil on your finger and anoint the door posts and order all negativity and evil out of the house, and order that nothing negative or evil can enter into your home including piggybacking on a person entering, order it to be so in the name of Jesus. Anoint all potential entrances to your home. To anoint the sick, place oil on tip of finger and touch it to the head of the sick and say a prayer of healing over them in Jesus name. See James Chapter 5:14-15..

Friend, I suppose you believe the Bible is the word of God. Why then do you use a paraphrase that obscures what some paraphrasing translator has said as distinct from what was in the original text (which, for example, does not mention door posts)? I encourage you to use a translation faithful to the text, such as the NAS, ESV, or (if you must) the KJV. That said, I do appreciate you sharing this text with many who are not familiar with it. Blessings,

It is rather basic knowledge that, as the attacker, if you can get inside the swing of a stick/baseball bat/etc. early in the swing, the swing is rendered ineffective and the stick/cane/bat can easily be taken from you, especially if the attacker is strong and quick. Hopefully in your classroom you cover these critical details such as the distance needed for this move to accomplish anything defensive. This three minute video is dangerous by itself.
@CaneMasters-WalkingCanes

Dangerous??? This technique is a highly effective movement that allows you to keep multiple attackers at bey. Any defensive tool can be defeated if the user has not been well trained.

@@CaneMasters-WalkingCanes Read the composition of the words with more care. The video by itself is dangerous because the short length prevents including details that are very important. I did not say the technique is dangerous or ineffective. But if attempted after watching this short video and without getting detailed personal training, then yes, it will get people hurt.

Keith is usually quick to remind, as the footer on the Cane Masters website states, that Cane Masters DOES NOT PROVIDE TRAINING. These videos are intended as tips, that a trained user can add to his/her repertoire or as a taste that a novice can view to understand what the cane is about. Perhaps that footer should be repeated in the introductions to these videos, as notice to those who have not visited the website. The now-obsolete system with which I am most familiar (52S) is built from two-stroke combinations, the first one offensive and the second one defensive. The second stroke can be held ready or delivered, as needed. And, if necessary, a combination can be repeated or followed by a different combination. So, that curriculum does address your concern, as I understand it. Anyone who thinks they're trained because of viewing and imitating videos is very likely to be badly surprised if they attempt to apply the little they know, as I'm sure you realize. Feedback is an absolutely necessary part of learning cane self defense. In that sense, I agree that these videos can be dangerous. But, as I see it, that's a consequence of their misuse rather than their use. And most anything can be dangerous when misused. I don't intend my analysis to be in any way critical of the videos. On the contrary I find them most helpful--because I plan to use them rather than misuse them. And, I'm grateful to Keith for sharing them with the cane self defense community.
