Tail light replacement (center piece) on Subaru Outback

I have a back light cover assembly with a migrating crack that I have been 'fixing' using super glue down the crack hoping that it won't break in half while I still have the car (2000 Subaru Legacy Wagon). I know exactly how that light bulb and bulb assembly got so bad and that is because of water leaking into the light fixture area from a poorly sealed assembly (or in your case that busted out piece of plastic). Now that I know how to remove the entire assembly, I may just go and replace the missing or damaged seals with new material to stop the leaks, but a good idea when replacing any bulb in your car is to dab a little dielectric grease on both the bulb and inside the bulb holder. It's a cheap and effective way to protect the electrical connection from moisture and rust and makes replacing a bulb so much easier.

Very useful video with clear explanation easy to follow, thank you. Took about an hour and a half, including putting away my tools afterwards. Only problem is that the (well) used replacement cracked in the same place within 3 days, so now I'm having to bite the bullet and fit a new replacement (a lot more than $500 AUD, but I don't like a wet trunk). Strangely the crack opens when cold and closes when hot, perhaps I should have fitted the replacement on a cold day!

well, same thing, down to the bulb in the same condition, socket rusted. I got the taillamp from one in better shape and free extra bulbs :) The center seems just cosmetic, previous owner backed into the hatch..

Has anyone tried to take the lens apart and clean and reseal the lens unit? Just got a used one with alot of bust on the inside

I would start by checking local junk yards, car-part.com is a good website for that, another option is ebay - plenty of used stuff on there

Doesn't look difficult at all. I went to order the assembly from the local Subaru dealership, they wanted 500 Dollars.
