Wind Craft Quads; We had a jump-pilot do similar in the ferocious winds at Livermore, CA c. 1970, Johnny.........(a member of the WWII 'Silkworm Club'). He hovered our empty Aeronca Champ overhead and, ever so slowly, got it to back up. Parenthetically, that little plane, stripped of anything unnecessary for skydiving, could haul four jumpers wearing the heavy gear of that era and the pilot.

I became a fan years ago when I was thinking about dead stick landings. I had been aboard a glider during a dead stick landing . . . because gliders do that pretty much every time. So my brain substituted "takeoff" for "landing" and I typed it into youtube and there was Tail Drager Fun doing a DEAD STICK TAKEOFF. I almost cheered out loud. I watched that dead stick takeoff a dozen times at least. So I was compelled to follow Steve Henry's adventures. Thank you, Steve.

When I was a New Pilot we had 20-35mph trade winds straight down the runway every afternoon (at my near the coast airport ) ... I loved slow flight on the edge of the stall & really short landings........ THIS looks like so much fun,.... wish I were 30 again... I could do this............. A LOT ! Great VIDEO !

Thank you, that would be incredible to have that much wind that was steady and not all gusty like it always is if it blows here. Although our gusty wind does make a fun challenge. 😊

Then they took off and landed cross-wise to the runway! After that they just took off and landed on the short taxi-way from the hanger!

Reminds me of the time I had to land with an insanely strong crosswind at an ATC controlled airport. I was really good at short landings but didn't have nearly as capable an airplane as this Highlander. After I was cleared to land, I made the turn onto base very early ... before I passed the end of the runway (the only runway at this airport), and told ATC I was going to land on the runway at right angles to the runway. His reply was one word --- *"What?".* I didn't answer, because I was very busy carefully controlling my flight path and speed. I touched down on the left edge of the runway and stopped before I reached the right edge of the runway ... then turned left to taxi down the runway to the first taxiway where I exited the runway. At which point ATC asked *What was that?* I explained that to land in the runway direction in such a strong crosswind was very dangerous, but what I did was very safe ... straight into the wind. And I did land on the specified runway (the only runway). Long pause from ATC. Then he turned me over to ground control and nobody said another word. It really was funny. I'm sure they were wondering whether I had violated any rules. I'm guessing that technically I didn't, but who knows. Something tells me I would not have gotten into trouble, since what I did was obviously much safer than trying to make a conventional landing in a ~50mph crosswind. For anyone who gets into a similar situation, there is an even better approach (yes, bad pun). Namely, do the same I did, except land at the leading edge of the runway exactly where a taxiway exits on the opposite side of the runway. Which gives you a great deal more distance to stop. Not sure why I've never heard of any pilot taking this "safe way out" of a bad crosswind situation. Better than a crash or ground-loop!

I rarely read long comments, and usually am tired of "people bragging", but this is actually a very interesting comment. Someone who "overrules" authority, when he/she is sure, that that is the best thing to do. And you rarely get into trouble by doing that, excepte for all the whimps, who feel threatened by your compentence and not backing down just because of status. Keep calm and survive on.!
