Ok folks, i have a tundra with a tonneau cover and the rod clip broke to tail gate, my tailgate was stuck, so i was able to get a coat hanger up through the tailgate and the body into the truck bed from underneath. I was able to pull the tonneau cover up 1 inch. I reached my fingers through and grabbed the coat hanger. i tied a shoe string to the coat hanger and pulled it through. then i cut the coat hanger to size and tied the end of shoe string into a nice NOOSE "Slip not" then i used the hanger to put the slip not on to the cover handle and was able to pull down and get it loose, then easy plastic clip replacement.

My linkage rod comes loose also. Can you buy just the cheap plastic clip that holds the linkage rod?

this might work for me. After removing / installing the tailgate, it is locked and i cannot close the tailgate.

Jose Villagomez, i recommend taking off the inspection or access cover on the tailgate and get in the truck bed and see whats causing the latch to open.

WD 40 the latch and catches.
