Make sure the mechanic is correct in the assessment about the engine blowing. At 400K, it is certainly plausible to have a run-out/blown engine, but it is also plausible to for that thing to be good for many more miles even towing depending on how it has been worked.

Still driving a 2011 The bad- exhaust manifolds had to be replaced around 80 thousand miles The gas tank will belch up gas if you attempt to fill it completely The fuel relay started to act up around 110k- 120k miles. Installed a bypass relay around the old one and it's fine. A tire sensor went out at 150k miles. Had to replace the heater core/ evaporator core at 148k. The heat was fine but it was better just to replace it all. Labor will get you because they have to remove the whole dash to get to it. Everything else works fine I still have the same radiator, engine, transmission, and transfer case. All that works like it should.

@@billbertagnoli4226My Hemi is fine. The cam/ lifter issue hasn't been a problem. I think that only happens to people who idle it for long periods of time and seldom open it up on the highway. There's a lot of goons on message boards yapping about their "Hemi Tick" when all they have is an exhaust manifold leak. I love the Hemi. Lots of power. However, the Hemi Charger and Challenger engines were awful for a period around 2010. The timing chains were too frail for the added stress when they went with cylinder deactivation and would often snap around 50k miles or so. Truck engines never had that problem because the chain is meatier.

Lifter bores have an oil gallery that feeds the lifter bores and cam. Not splash lubrication dependant. Needle bearings in the lifter rollers lock up/wear and then proceed to wipe/eat the cam. 2017 and up needle bearing size increased. Still wouldnt idle excessivly though and keep mds disabled by being in sport mode.
@samc231
@samc231 Ай бұрын
That oil gallery is OFFSET and not directly over the lifters and cam so at idle the oil does not splash around enough to lubricate the lifters and cam. These Hemi engines are Defective and have been like this for at least 15 years. Sure you can rebuild it but Why ?; it will simply do it again. Chrysler should have recalled them all with an updated design but then they'd go bankrupt. Shame on Scotty for making excuses.

‘17 Ram owner, approaching 100k miles. Couldn’t be happier with the truck. Only complaints are the parking brakes, which will seize up on you if you live up north. Doesn’t matter if you use them a lot or not. Haven’t replaced them yet, but going to try and tackle that on my own. Another one is the ZF transmission, which is a little sluggish on cold winter mornings in the first few gears. They’re supposed to be great transmissions, so that kind of bugs me, but it shifts fine once it warms up a little. The Hemi is a great engine, just have to maintain it and don’t idle it like a fleet vehicle.

I owned a 2016 sport model and loved the interior of that truck but it started getting the Hemi tick at 55,000 miles and the headlights got water in them somehow and the back up camera started failing so I traded it in and bought an SUV instead. I enjoyed that truck for six years but I felt it was only a matter of time before it expired.

Thoughts on a 2019 ram 1500 v6 Pentastar? I wanted a truck for daily driving and to haul a rental home upgrades, and got a good deal. "In this economy" the more fuel efficient is what I was going for. Don't need to tow a trailer, just minor things. It's driving great. Thinking about messing with the exhaust to give it a little noise. I've heard Scotty Kilmer is a 5.7 hemi fan on the 1500s. But any info on the v6?

All vehicles have their own list of issues. Here's the common ones on 19+ Rams: Rear window leak 3rd brake light leak Sun visors fail and fall down active air dam failure (though there is a recall on this one) Oil pans rust out Exhaust manifolds crack down the middle Lifter failure (which can lead to camshaft failure) Upper Control arm or balljoint failure battery premature failure. If yours is made in Mexico: Bad welds along the roof. Many guys are getting water leaking in and think it's the infamous rear window leak when really it's a bad weld just under that plastic strip on the roof. Will you get all these problems? No, probably not. But those are the biggest common issues with this truck. Look up the common issues with other trucks and pick the list you are most comfortable with.

Only thing with the earlier models was the rush issue over the rear back tires which should have been a dealer manufacturer mistake but when I talked to dodge themselves they said it doesn't fall under a safety issue but just like every every other vehicle as long as you maintain them they will run for a long time.

The camshaft of the Hemi is pressure lubbed. The Hemi has a windage tray to prevent the crankshaft from spraying too much oil - so it not designed to splash oil to the camshaft. The lifter 'tick' problem might be inadequate oil flow to the hydraulic valve lifters at idle. Some have installed a high volume oil pump.

On the idling problem - why isn't there an aftermarket fix for this? Also, rented a RAM Promaster today as a rental van to pick up a tool chest - very impressive. Loved the seating position, it drove excellent, the steering was perfect, I am wondering if this was electric steering on this model, or an older regular power steering model? The Toyota Corolla I drove a while back had fatiguing electric power steering, needing constant corrections. The gas mileage was terrible - I found myself wondering if the rental place had really filled it up - I seemed to get less than 10 mpg, and I drive fairly conservatively, and a good part of this was highway. The radio sucked - on a vehicle likely to have multiple drivers, you shouldn't have to take your eyes off the road to figure out how to get am radio on - I also would rather NOT have the push button start, it worked fine, but no improvement for me over turning a key - plus this making it easy to steal the car. Also, electronic parking brake may solve the "leaving the emergency brake on" that used to happen all the time on my previous companies work trucks - but I would be finding out if I could get rid of that and get an aftermarket mechanical hand brake - overall, a great van - my friend has an adult son with cerebral palsy in a wheelchair, I was thinking of how great it would be to convert a similar low-roof van for him and us to take on road trips -

I had a 2005 Power Wagon that got stolen 4 months ago. It had 330,000 miles on it and never had any major repairs or breakdowns. It was made in Mexico. We then bought a 2022 Power Wagon which is also made in Mexico. Started with 17000 miles and I'm up to 27000 now with no problems. By the way you are correct on avoiding long idling. I also change oil every 5000 miles and use 5W-20 rather than the recommended 0 to 20. The believe is that it provides a little better idle pressure, and I live in Arizona where we don't care about the cold. There are times I may want to idle for a while and am toying with the idea of rigging something up to get a 1500 rpm idle for that purpose.
