As someone who just switched from iOS to Android over iOS 16 and 17's bugs, the notification system is so so so much better. I can set notifications to silent and still get them, but on my time. Android let's me feel like I'm on control of my phone, instead of my phone being in control of me.

You can set notifications to silent and still get them on the Notification Center for iOS. I think most people's complaints about iOS' notification system is people genuinely not trying to set it up at all.

@@angeltorres7048 I think I've stopped using iOS at version 12 on the 5s so might not have the latest info but from my experience android 12+'s notification system is really customizable, you can allow only certain notifications for certain apps (like disable post/recommendation notifications and only allow DMs on a social media app) directly in the android settings, you can snooze a whole app's notifications, set them to silent, show notifications on the lock screen without showing their content while still showing content that doesn't contain sensitive data (a timer for example) don't know if the latest iOS has these features so if it does props to apple

The main reason I switched to Android is to get a headphone jack. God I wanted that iPhone SE 3 so bad. It's so cheap, but I just got too fed up of not being able to use my current phone with my lifetime supply of wired headsets that I have, so I kind of need a headphone jack.

I switched from Android to iPhone about 6 years ago but recently wondered what it would be like to have an Android again...so....in addition to my iPhone 14 Pro I recently got another phone line and bought the Google Pixel 8 as a spare in case of loss, theft or broken iPhone. Wow. I love it. It's just the size of my 14 Pro and after a 6 year hiatus from Android, I've fallen in love again. The Pixel 8 is speedy, the display is gorgeous and the way you can arrange the icons across the home screens is miles ahead of the iPhone iOS. It's a LOT easier. The only thing that it lacks is a consistent face ID to unlock it. Apple's face ID is miles ahead though in good lighting the Pixel 8 is fairly reliable. The fingerprint way of unlocking on the Pixel 8 is very dependable and works every time. All in all, I love it for a second phone and could even live with it as my primary phone. Great job, Google. You made me love Android again. By the way, I went with the Google Pixel 8 because the Samsung S7 Galaxy edge that was my last Android phone had so much bloatware on it. The Google Pixel is pretty clean!

It's probably one of your best videos. Good explanation of pros and cons. Also highlights the challenges with changing eco systems. Definitely shows why Apple did things like the Apple Card and savings account and has gone so hard on services. It makes it much harder and more expensive to switch. I noticed you've been using Pixel 8 for videos, and that has made me want to get one since they have looked great. It has been hard not to pull the trigger. I have always liked the pictures, the automation and intelligence has been awesome, now great video. Hard to see what it is missing or could do better.

I'm one of the type of people that switch between ecosystems but I definitely have to say that there are benefits on both sides and he's definitely correct about the app optimizations... Developers are in the game for one reason one reason only and that's to make money and they know that people on the iPhone side will spend more money than people on the Android side so they don't really worry about Android as much

But as someone who probably needs to deal with notifications, doesn't the fact that iOS hides notifications bother you? I tried switching to the iPhone several times (better hardware, camera, battery life) but I couldn't get over how my notifications would get hidden. If I received an important notification that I do want to respond to but if I'm busy, I'll leave it for later. Or if I'd have to wait until I get home to get on my computer to send files to someone. But during that time, I may want to do something else on my phone, like send a quick email or create a calendar event or send a text. If I unlock my iPhone to do anything and don't deal with the notification yet, it gets hidden. So I'll have to remember to check notifications later to respond to the ones I wanted to respond to. But often, I'd forget to do that since they were hidden. Sure, I could snooze them, but that's an extra step I don't have to do on Android.

For regular users: If you bought a phone several years ago, wether its Apple, Google, Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Huawei, brand-new old generations -- as long as it does what you need and some wants, I'm sure you'll be pretty satisfied with it. While its fine to listen, don't get mind-controlled. Influencers makes money out of their own thought bias. Always ask the question to yourself, do you really need it? do you have the money for it? If you have "extra" $1000, you have nothing else to spend it for, and you're old phone is broken, go ahead! But if its working fine like that old Samsung S8+, which is still snappy and does what you "need", then its just a plain "want". Have you ever taken a photo and shared to your family, and being question why the color looks like not real? or why the cloud in the picture is blurry? Did they ever asked about resolutions/megapixels? or how big the camera sensor? or what ISO did you use? or is it post-processed? ...On a very rare occasion, there could be (because you are trying to compare the same shot to another device), however most of the time, the conversation is mostly about what's in the photo that you've captured, as well as the memory and emotions recorded in it.

I would also like to add to this that, with bombardment of content, commercialism, and noise - having fewer screens in life is going to be better for both physical and mental health. Some technology is really useful, but in the end, the goal of these companies is to keep you on your phone for longer. I'm personally installing a minimalist phone launcher to help curb screen usage. So, to your points, old phones can definitely be embraced for their lack of features, and to help us focus on what matters, which is health, friends and family.

One thing I find funny is that you can get a good portion of the pixel benefits on iPhone when it comes to AI stuff. Magic eraser? Google photos has it (but it’s locked under a subscription). You think you get the pixel benefits on other devices but you really don't like? Yes, you do get magic eraser under the subscription of Google photos, but you don't have it to the extent that us pixel users do. Same thing with the Google home and Google Assistant. The Google Assistant is unrivaled with how well it works on a Pixel phone versus other phones, especially with an iPhone because it wants you to use Siri. So it kind of defeats the purpose of using Siri to use Google Assistant. Same thing with Google lens Sure, you can get Google lens on any phone but it works so smooth on the pixel and It's built into our camera. And as far as the Google home, you can use that integration on a pixel to turn your device to do not disturb or turn it off or answer and manage calls, which you can't do one other things.

@@therealzuluking Yeah I get what you’re saying. I’m just saying that shortcuts + action button give a decent experience, especially since Google provides a lot of great alternatives for iPhone users. Sure I’m missing out on saving a tap on an app to use a shortcut and maybe some better integration, but both the Google app and the shortcuts app can easily make the functionality still there. Also those shortcuts syncing on my MacBook and having that functionality on all of my devices is pretty neat. Also with the Google home I’m positive there’s shortcuts that solve that issue.

@@theothernodude3139 no, because those things that I'm talking about are for pixel/ Android devices specifically. For example, you can have a shortcut for it to read your messages, but it will only do it on your Android device. It can't do it from the Google home speaker or something else. Some things if it's not an Android device or pixel device it won't do them because they can't talk to each other. The device that you want it to be used on does not give it that full control within the app

A huge reason I am leaning more towards Pixels now over iOS is quite simple. Each year they keep improving and innovating. Where pretty much the opposite is true of iOS and iPhone. Back when I got my first iPhone which was a 5s in 2016, iPhone was light years ahead of Android and built with quality. Fast forward 7 years and now it's all about money and the quality has diminished greatly to the point I find myself bored with iOS. Don't get me wrong Pixels do have their issues, but this year Google has managed to fix damn near all my issues with their Pixels. I'm on an iPhone 13 now and I am heavily considering switching to a Pixel 8 soon. Because while iOS is reliable I wind up finding the features and setup Pixels offer over iPhone.

Long time Macbook user and part-time iPhone user here. I was switching between iPhone 13 and Pixel 7 and eventually just stuck with the Pixel. Android 14 is so good at this point, that I think many of my millenial peers in the US, who essentially have only used iPhones from day one, would be shocked by powerful and practical Android is. Android's notification system, especially if you get tons of emails in different inboxes, feels superior to Apple's. Like the accordion style previews you get on Android notifications - chef's kiss. I think the Apple logic is like, well, go read your emails when it's time to read your emails. That's cute and everything, but not useful. Also the scrollable Google Calendar widget - I mean it's so simple but so good. Little stuff like this adds up.

Funny, for me the best part of switching to my Samsung was the software. Can't access an old Angry Birds that I'm feeling nostalgic for, because the devs delisted it? Sideload it, now I have it. Can't listen to my KZbin music playlist in the background without Premium? Sideload an app designed to solve that problem. Want to play a game that I have on my old Wii at home, on the go? Sideload an emulator. What iPhone does, it does well. But there have been so many things over the years that I wanted my iPhone to do that it just couldn't. Oh yeah also my new phone can unfold into a tablet, which is a feature I can't get on an iPhone. That's cool too. Cool as that feature is though, it's nothing compared to the sideloading and customization. And the sales and secondhand prices - I got an ecosystem that retailed for a total of $2710 new, for $775. Used Z Fold 4, refurbished Galaxy Watch 4 classic, used S Pen and case, new Galaxy Buds 2. The closest Apple equivalent would be an iPhone 14, iPad Mini 6, Apple Pencil 2, Apple Watch 7 44mm, AirPods 2 - I'd be looking at around $1300 to get all that in the same condition I bought the Samsung equivalents.

@teamflowerninja I actually really like the narrow screen on my closed Z Fold. It makes it really easy to type one- handed, or if i'm wanting to type two- handed I just open it up. One thing the OnePlus Open has going for it with that aspect ratio, though - if your inner screen ever breaks, you have a perfectly normal, fully functional phone still. Whereas the Z Fold's tall and narrow outer screen is designed as a compliment to the main event, not meant to stand on its own. It'll do in a pinch, and it excels at one handed use, but it's incredibly cramped for anything I would want to use two hands for, mitigated by the fact I can just unfold it.

Great review! I see things the same way you do for the most part, but I can't agree with you on your stance on Apple Card or Apple Savings. I do all of my banking with Chase and they have an outstanding app, awesome customer service, and ATMs and branches all throughout Southern California where I live. I despise Apple's walled garden approach and am seriously concerned about placing all my eggs in one basket. Giving Apple that much control over my life is a step too far for me. They're a hardware and software company first, not a bank like Chase, Wells Fargo, BofA, etc. I owned a Google Pixel 3 and 4 and absolutely loved the software and experience using my phone. In my experience, I found that I spent less time on my phone and would accomplish tasks much quicker than I would on my iPhone. Sending messages and writing messages is primarily what I do on my phone, and it was all made simpler with the quality of the dictation/transcription that Google Assistant offers. Also, I'm not sure what it is, but something about my iPhone makes me want to waste more time on things like social media where as that wasn't the case on my Google Pixels. Ultimately, I think that Google's approach the last few years has been spot on and if they figure a way around the iMessage objection that Apple users give to switching, they will rake in the $$ as Apple has been horribly negligent with Siri.

I’ve had an iPhone for two years had pixel before that. Still miss many features. Fingerprint to unlock phone. Worked more reliably than Face ID. Especially if I’m using my phone in bed. Stock calculator sucks no calculation history Stock calendar sucks. Monthly view i can see i have an event but it doesnt say what it is without pressing on the day. Hard to see what i got going on compared to google calendar. Alarms don’t have a fade in option. Not having a distinct back swipe is annoying especially if i bring up the keyboard in an app by accident and i can’t swipe it away. Swiping to go back from wither side of the phone was way easier on android. Miss ability to “force” copy paste in multitasking view. The ios solution of doing a screenshot and copying from there is way more cumbersome No dedicated number row is super annoying I used to use split screen all the time on android. I really miss it. On iohone, after a phone call it goes back to the phone app. I often find mails accidentally calling people on accident. On android i never had this problem.

Just bought a pixel 8 pro and an iPhone 14 Pro Max. One thing you missed is Google assistant absolutely destroys Siri. I kept the iPhone, shipped back the Pixel, … having serious second thoughts. Voice to text, pixel nails it … Siri, laughable, and already sick of “I don’t know” or no response! If you’re not locked into something Apple-centric, the pixel 8+ is light years ahead in REAL AI.

Actually thats what doze does...the phone when on standby,it delays some notifications as the devs have not optimised the dose notifications.Yeah still some big companies still didnt did that which leads to notification delays when the phone is on standby.

Very relatable video. Also, Marcus by Goldman Sachs is the Apple Bank account, which as a 13 pro user I've had long before they connected with Apple. So you could easily just switch to that bank and their app is pretty standard, not a lot of bells and whistles on iPhone, so can't imagine it being too far behind on Android. I have so many bank accounts and credit cards and the hit to the credit score is like literally one point when they run a check. So it's truly negligible. I used to be team android and still admire it for many reasons. Wish I could use two phones at once like a techtuber

I switched from android to the iphone 15 and the only thing i dislike is in the youtube app, you cant be in landscape while browsing the main page and you cant just press the arrow in the top left corner to go back because the arrow is not there i really miss it

iPhone, Pixel, Samsung they have great flagship phones. Switching back and forth from android to ios or vise versa isn't that complicated for most people not like some folks say it to be. Unless you are deep in an ecosystem there might be a tad bit of working out to do but for most people reliability is what matters which most flagships offer now days.

S23 ultra is the best implementation of a screen that's flat yet has slight curves where the images don't distort. It's a leap over s22u. And also the scren seems to have less visual bezzel and is better than P8p.

I'm so glad I forgave them for giving me a bad note 7 cuz I'm loving my s23 ultra. They even have an iPhone mode if you really really like the home layout that much. Which would be perfect for older audiences honestly.

I mainly switched to Android because I need a headphone jack. It's tragic. I literally spent more money on a Sony phone than I could have spent on an iPhone SE 3, but a headphone jack made my life so much easier. I don't really use my phone that much besides browsing the web and listening to music, so I don't really care too much with operating system I'm on.

I agree with the action button. It got so annoying from accidental touches that I just disabled it to do nothing. Very much like what I did with that stupid bubble at the top of my screen. Apple better cut the shit with these gimmicks or I’m getting a divorce

The only thing I STRONGLY disagree with is the camera module. I think the complaints about camera bumps in general are dumb as most people don’t have their phone caseless placed on a flat surface when they use it. That, and the camera bump on the Pixel 8 feels MORE intrusive and awkward. Just an unappealing look.

If we're being honest, RCS Trumps iMessage now and the only thing that it might and I use the word might very heavily have an advantage over. RCS is video. But even then if you send a video it will prompt you to send it as a link so it doesn't lose quality. But if you have Google photos on your phone it will just open it up and Google photos so that's not even a hiccup

At $429 new with 1 battery cycle in an open box this was a no brainer. Naked Android rocks. I'd take an extra few mm thickness for extra battery, just level up battery to camera and it would be massive.
