Tails' Skypatrol (テイルスのスカイパトロール Teirusu no Sukaipatorōru) is a scrolling shooter video game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, developed by JSH and published by Sega for the Game Gear. It was originally released on April 28, 1995 exclusively in Japan, but was later released in other regions as an unlockable game in Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Gems Collection.
The game is a spin-off and a prequel to the Sonic series following the adventures of Sonic's trusty sidekick Miles "Tails" Prower as he tries to save an island from Witchcart, who threatens to turn anyone opposing her into crystals with her magic and also before meeting Sonic.
While flying his plane, Tails discovers a small island and lands to investigate. While initially appearing to be uninhabited, he eventually comes upon an old woman. She declares herself to be the great Witchcart, and claims the island and everything on it as her own, threatening to transform any dissidents into crystal. She then heads off with her henchmen, and Tails, determined to stop her, chases after them.

Apparently this game was originally supposed to be a crossover with Disney, with Tails having to battle iconic Disney villains, but the deal fell through while the game was in development. Test footage of Tails fighting long-time Disney antagonist Pete exists on the internet.

Actually it was meant to be a full fledged Disney game with Mickey Mouse having to fight several Disney villains yet Sega lost the license for Mickey so it was reskinned to Tails. The engine for this game predates the Mickey Mouse game as a whole as this game's engine was going to be used in an unknown game for a system with similar capabilities to the Game Gear yet was cancelled and Sega got hold of the engine. There was also another game which would've used this engine again. The game was titled "Boom Boom Kabun" and was planned to release on the Game Boy Color yet was canceled presumably due to Sega now owning the engine used.

@@KlonoaPrime There is no indication that the game had any connection to Disney before Sega purchased the project. Sega made the decision shortly after purchasing the game that they wanted Tails to be the main character. This occurred before any connection with Disney can be established. As I said, footage exists of Tails fighting against Disney characters, including some used in advertisements for the game. This indicates that the deal with Disney fell through fairly late in development.

The game started out as a Mickey Mouse game for a different system yet was cancelled, then was picked up by Sega, then was converted to Tails. That Sega advertisement used footage from when Sega was reskinning everything Sonic themed. That's why Pete was left over. There was no damn Sonic/Disney crossover game. And btw I want you to explain to my why off all characters would Sega pick Tails instead of their golden boy Sonic to headline a Disney crossover, that's like if Nintendo picked Luigi to headline a crossover with fucking Kingdom Hearts. I remember playing this as part of the Sonic Gems Collection back in '05. Not a bad game. I enjoyed the unique gameplay mechanics, as the game is quite fun! It's a nice Tails spinoff, although I always liked Tails Adventure quite a fair bit more.

This has to be my favorite Sonic spinoff of all time (if its a spinoff), i always played this on that Sonic Gems collection for the Gamecube when i was a kid, i beat it like alot of times. good times good times. i praise the gameplay, originality, and the music but criticised the game for being too short but its still a pretty fun game. its #7 on my top 50 games of all time. i have it through homebrew on Wii U. Sega needs to revive these type of games. i Would love to see a Tails game for Nintendo Switch ^•^

Well, footage of the beta version did show Bearenger (the second boss) with a design that was pretty much Pete. So either they realized the similarity and changed it, or this was going to be some Mickey Mouse game before it was changed to feature Sonic characters.

Konkar Badger in terms of timeline this takes place before tails had ever met sonic so instead of facing Dr Eggbotnik, tails faces off against Witchcart and her evil like minded minions. That’s the story of this game

I like this game, but dang does the screen crunch get annoying. That and I kinda found it hard to distinguish the background from the foreground (Especially with the last level). Otherwise, I think this is one of the more solid Sonic spin-offs.
