Taimak on How He Landed ‘The Last Dragon’ Role (Flashback)

In this flashback, famed actor Taimak spoke to VladTV about not having issues as a mixed kid growing up, and he pointed out that he didn’t grow up in racist areas. Taimak went on to detail getting into martial arts at 6 after being a big fan of Bruce Lee, and he also spoke about competing as a teen. To make extra money at the time, Taimak revealed that he would work security at big clubs in New York, including Studio 54, where he said he got into fights. While he was debating about going to college, Taimak revealed that “The Last Dragon” auditions happened. Taimak explained that he thought the audition was a martial arts exhibition, and he added that he did very poorly at the acting audition. After his father worked with him on the lines during a vacation, Taimak went back and asked for another audition, which he nailed.

I’m mixed as well and I was a child when I first saw this movie. Never once thought about race. He could’ve been Indian or Eskimo and I would’ve still felt like I could relate and look up to him.

As a lifelong Bruce Lee fan since age 7, TLD was a hugely inspiring and influential film for me as a kid. It broke boundaries and the soundtrack was killer. Similar to when Wu-Tang burst on to the scene.
