About 400 years ago when the Spanish first came to Northern Taiwan most of them settled down in Demsui because the Taipei basin was a lake in fact due to its heavy rainfall all year round. The Ketaglan indigenous people inhabited the brim of the lake and they used canoes to move around. during the beginning of 18th century immigrants began to channel away the water into Demsui river and reclaim the land building the irrigation system there and Taipei developed step by step into a metropolis we see today.

Back in the early 1980s, when I was a child, the Thermal Valley was like a natural hot pot! People could directly access the boiling hot spring water, which made it quite dangerous, resulting in accidents from time to time. The most popular activity at the Valley was boiling eggs. There were stalls around the area selling raw eggs, both chicken and quail eggs, to visitors. People would immerse the raw eggs into the hot spring water, rotate them using chopsticks or whatever sticks they could find nearby, and finally, peel the eggshells to enjoy the authentic hot spring eggs! However, this activity led to a messy and unpleasant park area, as many people would casually discard their eggshells and chopsticks everywhere. Later on, the government intervened and decided to rebuild the Thermal Valley park. They prohibited access to the hot spring water, which meant no more boiling eggs. While it may have become less fun, the park now appears calm, much cleaner, and, in my opinion, much nicer.

Thank you for sharing this! On one hand I am sure it is a bummer to have more restrictions, but that is wonderful here that with them they were able to transform them to make them safer and better for everyone! The old name of Thermal Valley is Hell Valley or Ghost Lake, because there's always steamy and mystery, and many years ago tragic accident happened that one tourist fell in the lake and died, but fortunately nowadays the government turns it into an attractive place.

I could definitely see it being mysterious, did not know about that grim history though. How sad. :( Regardless, it has been transformed into a lovely area!

Why are you wearing masks outside?
@IfWeGoTo5 ай бұрын
They were still required on trains at the time and people still wore them in crowded areas. So maybe we had forgotten or had just been through a crowded area. Or pollution. We wore them prior to, and now after the pandemic if it’s heavily polluted outside. Does it bother you or something?
This was filmed earlier this year, so I think around that time it was just before they dropped the mandate in some locations. I’m not sure what the rules are now, be I would guess some private business still request them or people prefer them in crowds
