My review of the Taito EGRET II mini home console. Comes with 40 built in games and a really cool rotating screen. Plus there are two accessories: a gamepad and a trackball / paddle controller with an additional 10 arcade games. However, there is ONE BIG GOTCHA!

To be clear my USB power adaptor isn’t defective, it’s that the Egret II has really high power requirements and may not work with the USB power you already have in your house. They should have included one that works in the box, especially at that price!

Fair enough but yeah they should’ve definitely included it if it was that dang specific.

That's a good point. It's...SORT of okay if a company doesn't include a charger assuming you have your own so long as the device has a standard power draw. But if it's got unusual power requirement then, yeah, an included wall adapter should be a must. I'm wondering if it uses USB-PD standard. I know USB-PD (Power Delivery) stuff is wonky or outright incompatible with non-PD wall adapters. My GPD Win is a PD device and I have to take that into account (well...I would but at the moment mine is effed up and I need to get it fixed).

I had a similar issue when I tried to use the Analogue Pocket with a different supply, so when I had issues with this when I started filming I knew it was the power supply. However it seems to work fine plugged into a USB slot on my 7 port hub, with an Apple iPhone power supply, and with one of the USB slots on a power strip I have. It really should come with a supply.

No need, it has an SD card slot, so any Roms you play on a RetroPi YOU SHOULD be able to play on it. If not, still no need to hook up a RetroPi. Soneone needs to crack it's storage, abd figure out what file format the games are, so people can start creating rom files in that format. Long story short... give it time, the gamer community, specifically the emulation community, will figure it out for you...

not gonna happen I don't think. It sucks. Neo Geo released that crappy mini, with micro output and analog joystick, and it didn't sell well, so now the Japanese game companies think that Americans don't want these. I think a lot of people would have bought Astro City Mini, if they put it out with English language roms. It's still a great machine, and likewise this one. But I think if they did a proper release of these for under $200 in the U.S. and Europe people would buy it.

Make sure the wall power adaptor is approximately rated for the amperage required. I had to use one of my newer iPad plugs since all of our other plugs either didn’t supply enough or too much voltage and only one provided enough amps. That might be the cause of your freezing and shutoffs because my unit from Amazon Japan didn’t experience that with a few hours of play this far.

@@DoubleMonoLR 5v at 2.5a is the same power supply requirements for the Raspberry Pi so I wonder if the internal system board on this just a Raspberry Pi Zero running custom emulation software for arcade cabinet boar or at least uses similar component/cpu to the R-Pi. What this means is all you have to do if buy a Raspberry Pi power supply (The R-Pi uses a the same micro USB connector) and it should supply the 2.5 amps this mini arcade requires.

@@MrRobarinoI’m not sure what you mean regarding “every console”. Outside of the Taito collections (which have poor rom dumps and emulation), and of course the Saturn release that’s very difficult to obtain these days, the PS360 era and beyond hasn’t seen a release to my knowledge. I believe Square owns the property now and an Elevator Actions game that was an homage to the original title was released during the PS360 era, but Returns has been largely ignored. ahh the arcade cabinet speakers.. i really miss walking around an Arcade and just hearing the loud buzz and rush of arcade games playing in attract mode around you, some louder than others. I like that some retro arcade places with beer and food are kind of making a comeback too. I love the features for this mini cabinet with the customization for the screen and the joystick, some really innovative designs with that. Honestly the next thing I want is like a CRT type mini arcade cabinet that comes with a light gun only, and includes light gun games like Time Crisis or Point Blank, I really miss playing those kinds of games and you can't nowadays with LCD screens so you'd need like a full home setup and a playstation, and a big CRT tv to do something like that today. And yeah not all power bricks are created equal. I would guess you need one that is more than just the standard 5 watts or something. I would love one of these but to pay $500 for this plus all the cool peripherals is really pricey. I love that you can play trackball games though, that might be worth getting it by itself. If people could find a way to install their own games from the arcade or what have you this could be a really cool little home arcade cabinet.

@@secondaccounta320 so what paddle controller's work with emulators ? Coz all I wanna say do is play ARKANOID ! 😂

The diameter of the paddle dial needs to be larger. When the diameter is so small, it's very easy to overturn because the distance you have to turn it to move is much smaller. If you put a larger dial on it, it would probably be more effective and easier to finesse. It's like having a large steering wheel vs a tiny steering wheel. Maybe there's a mod.

I just got mine today!!! I’m really enjoying it, and do see my little girls 😊 I did only get the basic edition, no extras, and that’s fine. I do not intend to connect it to a larger screen in the near future. It’ll live in my desk next to my keyboard. The screen rotating is super legit: it didn’t turn as freely as you might think, but the build on the retention and release mechanisms really feel like they’re meant to outlast the machine itself! Super heavy duty. You could rotate that screen 1000x in a sitting and it probably won’t break a sweat. Also I’m pretty astute as to keeping up with the power demands of my different USB devices, this one looked like it would need a higher output, so I have it connected to a QI usb charging port at my desk which provides plenty of power for it, no issues. I typically don’t use small USB power bricks anyway, mostly the big beefy multi socket quick charge ones like for when I travel.

Got the SNK mini console so definitely will be getting this one as well. Definitely like the trackball controller as some games need that and as many have mentioned you can't play arkanoid or breakout with a joystick controller very well.

This thing is so much better than the SNK mini that you're gonna be blown away. The Sega Astro City mini is also really awesome. It makes a big difference having a digital stick, and proper HDMI output.

I use a modded Arcade1up cabinet. It uses the Intec fighting switch board. It allows me to hook up my mini game consoles and play them on an arcade cabinet. I use a Sega Astro Mini City and the NeoGeo mini. The control deck uses Bluetooth connectors to connect to the mini devices. I am wondering if I can use it on this Egret device. It would be awesome if I could.

You should specify the power brick specification! What makes it working and not working with the device?

Metal Jesus, just so you know, RE: Arkanoid: you can adjust the responsiveness of the paddle in-game, by hitting the upper middle button on the console itself, on the game menu. It will come up with a 1-5 scale for the controls, with 3 being the default. I found that helped somewhat with the problem you're talking about, altho partly it is a very sensitive controller. The other thing is, I found it easier to play when I put it on a larger screen. I think there's a sort of motor-optical illusion, if you play it on the smaller screen and you've played Arkanoid in the arcade a lot, you tend to want to move the paddle further than it needs to be moved, because you're used to dealing with a larger screen. So some of that awkwardness went away, for me, the minute I blew it up on HDMI. You should have included that in the review actually, because it has unique bezels that only appear when you put it on a big screen, that you don't see during gameplay on the console itself. Just another small feature. Great review overall though. I'm sure the power brick would have been less of an issue, if any of us could read the instructions....

there's also a arcade joystick controller but I'm not sure what the point of that is as you can just play with the joystick the console has in portable mode I guess it's so you can plug to tv and still use arcade controls? Not really sure but I've been wanting one of these for a while

I got mine on 3/11 and it is a good mini cabinet which feels like the real deal and like the Astro City and Neo Geo Mini, it doesn't eat up as much space which makes it a breeze to take anywhere. I should know since last weekend, i took mine to Universal Orlando where i played it while drinking at Finnegan's and at Moe's Tavern (what other guests and employees were impressed with was the rotating screen display gimmick). Only thing I'm not ok with is that the base unit doesn't come with the mini marquees despite coming with the topper

I just got my Egret 2 in the mail and they now come with a bright yellow, very prominent leaflet that lets you know you need a 5v 2.5a or greater power supply. So at least they let you know. Still does not come with a power brick.

that paddle controller looks perfect for tempest bc the arcade machine has that same weighted free spinning kind of thing, pretty sad that arcade 1up couldn't get it right

to me it's kind of funny that people complain about this thing being expensive, when Arcade 1up can sell a PCB in a plywood box with really 2nd rate components and folks will buy it up for $600. I bought this peice by peice and I didn't get the crappy console controller -- got the console, the paddle controller and the joystick controller for around $360. That would be cheap for Arcade 1up. And I got 50 games with quality controllers.

These things really should come with a manufacturer approved power brick. I fried an Astro City by using the wrong one (was 5v 2A as specified). Luckily I was able to get it repaired by the manufacturer. I've been using the one that came with my Sega Genesis mini and no issues so far.

I wonder if you made the paddle spinner larger like put a cap on it to make it bulkier if that would help. I think it's too small, so your muscle memory is getting all screwed up, and it also makes it uncomfortable to use since you need finer controls.

I have an original Arkanoid cab and the original paddle has a lot of resistance. It's not free spinning like Tempest. So it sounds like it's as designed.
@originalfunkyfry

it feels somewhat different, just based on my memory of Arkanoid, but pretty close. I think the main problem is just a sort of optical mechanical illusion. If you play it with that controller, which is almost full size, on the little tiny screen, your brain tells you that you need to compensate more than you really do. As soon as I put it on a larger screen with HDMI, I stopped having as much of a problem with the controller. Also, it has a sensitivity adjustment in-game, on the special options menu. It defaults at 3 but you can go down to 1 or up to 5 for more or less responsiveness. Not sure if Metal Jesus was aware of that. Since the instructions are in Japanese, we're still sort of discovering things about it.
