In most countries that I have been to, it always seems nice at first glance but after the novelty wears off, their down sides become overwhelming. Taiwan is quite the opposite. What you see is what you get in Taiwan. They don't worry about sprucing up the appearances or embellishing the dark side. Taiwanese people simply make their country a very nice place to work and live in.

There’s a lot of things to do in Kaohsiung. Hope you will come back soon! Taiwan is indeed underrated because foreigners think that most Taiwanese can’t speak english. But it is really convenient here. Signage have english translation. And we can always use google when we are lost in translation. I love it here! Been living and working here for 12 yrs now. Appreciate that you do a lot of homework before traveling, and your knowledge often makes many locals like as me feel inferior! The bridge is Great Harbor Bridge/高雄港大港橋. It is 110 meters long and 5 to 11 meters wide. It can accommodate 550 people and bicycles at the same time. It is the longest cross-port rotating bridge in Asia. There is an opening and closing show at 3 pm every day. Complete horizontal operation in 3 minutes! You are right, Taiwanese like to go outside on weekends, although sometimes it feels crowded, but you can experience a completely different atmosphere! I hope that one day I can do what you did, thank you so much for sharing such a miraculous and beautiful lives!👍🥰🙏👏

When I first lived in Kaohsiung in about 1994, it was maybe the 2nd busiest port in the world. The Love River was thick and dark, terribly polluted. The city was nothing like it is today. It keeps getting better. The strawberries on a stick are called tang hu lu (tung who loo). Very nice! Thousands of foreigners live in Kaohsiung these days - only a handful in 1994. Lots of rain over the summer months and very high temperatures.

Yes I agree first time I visited Kaohsiung was 2000 and we arrived on bikes after cycling down the east coast from taipei to kenting and back up west coast. After cycling past the refineries and then china steel and through all the pollution I vowed never to return to kaohsiung. Then 2003 I was sent back to kaohsiung as the company I worked for was building part of the high speed rail. Wow what a change in 3 years and I saw it changed much more in the next few years I was doing the high speed rail project. Been here 20 years this year, and best place ever! And only getting better!

I haven’t been to the new area! It looks great! There’s the former British console at Takao close to cijin, also a good place to visit. Southern Taiwan in winter is dryer and windy because of the seasonal wind comes from northeast and the big mountains as a great divide has cut off all the humidity in the wind. Hence, the north/ northeast side of taiwan is raining a lot during winter. :)

Nice that you were almost in my footsteps . Yes the art District , also confused . Was a marshalling yard with all those tracks . I liked being a stranger in a strange land .Was covid back then :-) Did you get to the sea and see the Coast Guard boats :-) The plastic whale on the Love River ? Glad you got to see some old Taiwan . I got lucky while in Kaohsiung while walking back from the harbour , firecrackers . I followed my ears for an hour until I found the source , huge street parade around the streets , epic . That was about 1pm , walked to my Air BnB by the river and the last of the parade , called it a day 50m away from me from 6-7;30 pm . Off again so soon , I feel you will want to return . I do . was there this time 3 years ago . A lot of time taken trying to get a flight home . took the slow train from Ks , should have stayed at the bottom a day or 2 , then had fun up the east coast . Going back , the gorge was cool , quite a day out . Had issue with the busses , I know it says a certain time , the driver should slow down , I did not hail mine as he sped past . So I did what I do , complained :-) When is the next bus ? Was a day trip . I got a lift and apologies from management :-) I did see trails , for pre booking . Found some almost as tiring with a fast French lady , her flight was booked . Only so much you can put in one 'story' , some cool places I saw , not here . Hope you saw them . You have an aggenda and a plan , cool :-) I could not leave Taiwan , 1 month became 4 . When you do get back , let me organise a trip around TOGA , 2-3 hours . Tainan area . Literally a suburb for orchid propagation and growth for international markets . I do get the 'been there , done that ' idea , got a grasp of the country and folks . Would I go back and why ? What did I miss the first time ? You saw the boats over the river , I crossed a bridge , all closed back then :-( Been a cool trip back for me thanks .
