TAIWAN EXCLUSIVE! Mystery Ranch URBAN GRID! Better Than The UNICORN 2.0?!?

So I’m well down the ECD/Pack/Backpack rabbit hole, and one of the first packs that caught my eye after the Unicorn 2.0 was this Mystery Ranch Urban Grid! Little did I know when I saw it that it was a Taiwan Exclusive Release and it would be VERY DIFFICULT to source...
But that’s never stopped me before, and here it is IN HAND! What a wonderful Christmas season!
As for the pack? It lives up to expectations and then some! I couldn’t be happier!

So cool to see a new bag nerd! The 2Dap is way bigger than the Unicorn. I have an ASAP which is similar in size to the Unicorn, but is a touch bigger dimensionally, but smaller in Vol. according to MR. One thing I've noticed with MR bags is their design philosophy is more barrel shaped vs. squared, which can make packing difficult. I REALLY want"ed" (still undecided) and on a Unicorn 2.0 in olive. But I'm pretty sure it will be too small for my carry needs based on the shape and how items pack out in my ASAP. My favorite pack so far is my 21L GR Heritage. The waxed canvas has more give and patinas over time. I'm still looking for the end all be all bag, but nothing has come up that really grabs my attention. I also find that these modern fabrics will degrade much faster, especially hypalon, it frays really easily. Anyways, good luck hunting!

Yes, I definitely noticed the barrel shape vs squared, which I'm sort of used to with my DSPTCH Daypack, but MR takes it to another level. If you're concerned about the Unicorn 2.0 being too small I would say that is very well founded. The depth feels so shallow and with the hard shovel in the back for the harness, depending on where it lands, it actually narrows out the pack even further. The material has no give, so yes, I basically was forced to rebuy smaller, narrower organizers, like the Peak XS camera cube. All that said, the bag is gorgeous. It's a trade off I'm willing to accept to have and use it. To your point, it isn't my be all end all bag though. For that, I actually am taking a shot having one completely custom made to suit my needs. We'll see how that turns out, but I'm probably 3 months away from getting that one. I do have a 26L GR Samurai on the way, which will be my first GR, so I'm excited to see what makes those so incredibly popular! Their waxed canvas Heritage looks amazing but I'm reluctant because I don't want to have to maintain it. How often do you need to re-wax do you think, and how do you think it will look long term if you never do (which is probably what would happen in my case)? I checked out your channel and subbed! Nope, prefer the Unicorns. I don't like that pack at all, looks like a budget Mystery Ranch pack plus don't like the external pockets much. The GR1 Samurai is my second favorite bag at the moment but it's the finest to look at, I bought two I love it so much. My favorite is my Rofmia Daypack M, the attention to detail on that pack is just as good if not better than my Nomin.

Appreciate the perspective. No question the quality is down a notch not just from the Unicorn, but also their main lines. Halcyon can't compete from a durability perspective to Cordura, XPac, Dyneema, Ballistic Nylon, you name it, but IMO it does look nice. I know it's not for everyone, but Tom Binh uses it extensively and there are people who definitely love it. It is a lot easier to load out than the Unicorn, that's for sure. I think the rarity factor is definitely coming into play for me. I know if I let this one go I'd probably never get it back, whereas the Unicorn, at least for now, should be easy to reacquire. I'm also very confident I will never run into another soul that has this pack stateside. All that said, I obviously love the Unicorn 2.0 as well, and I've got nothing but love for those who love it! It's a fantastic pack, and this one certainly has relative deficiencies, but I still love this one too anyway! Great to hear your thoughts on the Samurai! I'm even more excited to get that one now! @@FlawlessActivity I prefer 21 liter GR1s. I have a few 26L like a GRxc1 Guerilla I use for travel, and my OG GR1 from 2010 which is actually 25L I think, Goruck only had one size back then and it was weird. Both my Samurais are 21L, one stays in it's plastic as a collectors piece cuz I like that bag so much. 21Liter is my goto size and better for my torso I'm 5'9"(175cm). It works best for all my general needs. If I'm traveling and have special things I want to keep w me I take my 26liter bag or something from another brand in that size range.

@j.taveras8447 man, totally on the same page! I know we talked about the perfect pack size before, and I definitely prefer smaller when possible. Just more compact and maneuverable. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I was able to snag a 26L brand new at a reasonable price, so that's what I got, but I'm thinking - buy a beater 21L so that I don't feel bad about putting it through the paces. Your 1 to wear, 1 to stare mentality is 👌. I've definitely done a lot of that on this channel, just not with the exact same bag in the exact same color, but I totally think the Samurai is worthy!
