Taiwan, as you said "a hidden gem" I had 28 days holiday over Christmas and new year in 2015/2016 in Taiwan, started in Taipei, train down to Kaohsiung, train up to Hualien, then on up to Keellung and back to Taipei, it was the nicest and most friendly place I have ever been to, the people are so helpful, and very friendly every where I went, your are made to feel welcome everywhere, in my mid 70s I have been to a few countries in my life, but Taiwan is the top of my list, I wished I had stayed for 3 months, an absolutely Wonderfull place with fantastic happy memories, travelled from the UK by myself but had a Wonderfull tour guide for the month, I thank you for posting this video it has a lot of information and its very accurate,

These travel tips are great and right on point. I wish I could say that the weather you experienced was atypical, but it's really not - the summer is seriously hot all the time and always way above 30 degrees (I don't know where they get that number from sometimes, it seems like they often forecast 30 degrees but then the actual max temp is higher every time. BUT... some people love it. My mum was one of those, and says she'd never visit in the winter - go figure!

Just a tip if it hasn't been covered, don't buy MRT tickets individually. Buy an Easy Card and load some money on it (I do it in 1000TWD increments). Then you don't have to get a ticket every time, and you can also use the card in various places like Family Mart, 7-11, etc as well as on the bus system and to rent U-Bikes to enjoy a ride around Taipei.

Extra advice : - Buy a Easycard at a MRT station so you don't have to buy MRT tokens every time and you can use it in convenience store and to take the train for exemple. Topup at MRT stations and convenience stores - If you don't go to Taipei Main Station from the airport, you can take a bus, it is cheaper and well documented on Google Maps. - At the airport, ask at the information desk to have a iTaiwan account created. It gives you a free Wifi access in MRT, public monuments and many places in Taiwan.

I was in Taiwan in March 2024 and would recommend the Taiwan Railway intercity trains over the HSR for most purposes and cost less. The Taiwan Railway train stations are inside the cities so you end up not losing time due to finding local transportation from the HSR stations to go into town. Taipei and Kaohsiung are the only cities where the TR/HSR trains share the same station and HSR is great if you are super pressed for time between these cities.
