I've tried betel nut before at my village, from my experience, it feels like chewing on a wood bark, it's really has a bitter taste but not too bitter though, the leaf is called 'daun sirih' in Melay, the leaf is normally use for medicinal purposes but I'm not sure why we have to chew it with the nut. The white thing is 'kapur' or chalk, I think, I don't know. But when you eat it, it kinda created this weird feeling in your mouth where it starts to get numb and after chewing on it a couple times, it turns into a reddish colour when you spit it out.
@MAXDragon6704 жыл бұрын
I’ve tried betel nut before and yes, it’s a very interesting experience and the red spit threw me off lol though I chewed it without the leaf which I think makes it even stronger. Anyways glad you were able to have that experience :) FYI that nut is very popular in Guam and the CNMI

For us as Indonesian, this is similar to "Menyirih" activities. Using betel leaves (Piper betle / daun sirih), areca nut (Areca catechu / biji pinang), and lime betel (kapor). Almost every indigenous tribe in the Indonesian archipelago, uses it as a traditional or for daily life. They say for dental health and strengthen it. After chewing they emit a red juice like blood. Bitter and spicy for sure, yaiks hahaha 🌰🍃

Same here in malaysia. However these days only those really, really old people in rural areas or kampong still follow this culture. In fact one of my most vivid childhood memory is of my late grandmother. Everytime we go back to visit her at the village, she would always have her brass container in front of her with all the full set sirih ingredient. She'd spend the whole day chewing until her teeth turns bright red. I used to think she looks like a grandma vampire with blood dripping down her mouth lol.

We also have this back in the northern part of the Philippines although we usually use the mature or older husked areca nut. Usually part of the offering to the dead but still widely used by the elderly or those living in and around the mountains of Cordilleria. Never tried it though but they say it has mild hallucinogenic property which can be addictive similar to nicotine. They can make your spit red or pinkish and regular consumption will destroy your enamel much worse than candy.

As someone from Taiwan, this is not a snack nor street food. It’s more like cigarettes or coffee, it is used by some taxi and long distance drivers to stay awake. It is also very addictive, but it’s not really a food. It’s like chewing tabacco, you spit it out after you chew it.

I watched an entire documentary on this. It’s a huge problem and a drug not “chewing gum”. This is from what I understand as a sorta grey area in the laws and was once outlawed by the government. When that happened these nuts went deep into the black market making things more dangerous so they again lessened the fines and shop owners started putting their own pouches together again but no legitimate companies are able to produce this still.

@美菱4 жыл бұрын
The wrapping is a leaf from Piper bettle L, the mixture she's spreading is composed of Areca catechu L. and slaked lime. And yes, they don't rot very quickly - you can store them for 2 weeks - month depending on the quality of the betel nut.
@247micko4 жыл бұрын
Worked for years in PNG, Betel nut is chewed a lot there. We wouldn't allow it in our workshop because the chewers spit it all over the floor(& anywhere) & our workers had to often lie down on the floor to work under trucks, etc. However the construction division allowed their men to chew it as it helped them get through the long hot days. Our trucks used to come in for service with red streaks of betel nut/saliva running down the doors, yuk. lt does calm the drivers down though, better that than alcohol. ln PNG they mix it with lime, & l don't mean the green stuff! Lime from the garden.!!!! l tried it myself once! only once was enough.
