Although Mandarin is spoken widely in Taipei, once you get outside Taipei, the use of Taiwanese increases a lot. From when students got hit for speaking Taiwanese at school, to now teaching Taiwanese in school, Taiwan has made good progress. Taiwan's national identity gets stronger day by day. Language is one of the ways way of accenting the difference with China (plus the cultures of the two countries are now quite different too).

Isn’t “Taiwanese” just the Fujian dialect? And the real Taiwanese spoken by the indigenous population (real Taiwanese people) still a minority there?

That Taiwan business man forgot to mention that Thia people doesn’t have yearly holiday except than small amount of public holidays. They work hard for 10 dollars per day. I wish he will experience life of ordinary Thai people for 350 baht / day with 1 day off per/ week and no yearly holiday of 1 months

"Can't pronounce NG"? Are you sure about that? Bo po mo has a couple symbols for that specific sound. "Can't" is a very strong word. Maybe "tendency to replace NG with N" might have been more humanizing.

Eileen used this wording with no malintent whatsoever, and of course, she was not trying to "dehumanize" anybody. Even those concerned wouldn't feel "dehumanized". Because it's common sense how she meant it. That's just how they say it in China and no-one gets offended - because it is simply not offensive for them. Not a bit. They would even look at you like "what the heck you're talking about". It wouldn't even cross their minds to feel offended. Do you realize that it's only the West that is woke? For other, older cultures that withstood millenia, this is just another western craze. Again, please try to understand that this kind of thinking that is constantly searching offense and victimhood in everything is simply non-existent in the rest of the world.

This is great content for learning Chinese. But it is fascinating to me how comfortable both of you are saying "Taiwanese are like this" and "Thais are like that" as if all the people in these countries have exactly the same personality and charactersitics based on their nationality. It is so unscientific! People are individuals. Sure, there may be cultural tendencies, but you speak in definite terms as if nationality determines personality. I have noticed this a lot in my travels in East Asia. Japanese people do this too. It is dehumanizing and leads to prejudice. If you think that all people from a certain country are "like this" or "like that" you will find yourself pre-judging people from that country according to your own beliefs. You will start to judge them, categorize them, and put them in boxes before they have even done anything. I find it sad to hear people talk in this unscientific way as if we have made no progress in our common humanity over the past 100+ years. Let us break away from stereotypes and collective judgements. Incidentally, if you are thinking, as a Westerner, of moving to China, Taiwan ,Japan, or Korea, this way of thinking - which is everywhere - will make your life more difficult. People will assume all sorts of things about you based on the country you are from. Maybe it is the education system, but many people (not all people, would not want to break my own rule!) seem to have great difficulty in NOT seeing nationality (race/origin) as the most important determining characteristic of an individuals character and behavior. It's sad. But thank for the content, which, just from a language learning point of view, is extremely useful.

Taiwan may produce all the important computer chips, but it’s still a developing country, much like China. There’s no reason for Taiwanese to feel superior to Thai. Any country that has zero control over their pollution and creates extreme environmental destruction is a developing country, and it’s yet to be seen if they learn to live responsible and in harmony with nature.. or if they will destroy everything like Sauron and Orks.

You obviously have not seen the progress the country of Taiwan has made over the last 40 years. I lived there when it was really bad. The growth of the environmental movement and improvements they have made have been commendable. No perfect, but on a good track.
