I ordered the Taka-mini and it's amazing! I just wanted to say thank you again for making this video, if it wasn't for you I never would've known about the taka-mini's. I knew they were nice but I wasn't expecting them to be this nice. The photos you see of this guitar don't do it justice. I couldn't believe how pretty this guitar was when I opened up the package and saw it in person. It's very solid and well built, has beautiful tone, and is actually quite loud. I have had the opportunity to play the GS mini as well and I actually prefer the Taka-mini. The neck is very smooth and I like the feel of it more then the GS mini and I also love the cutaway style of the guitar. The finish on it is actually matte which I thought looked really cool. Over all if you are unsure of which one to get and you pick the Taka-mini I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Glad you like the guitar! The Taka-Mini is definitely the way to go if you don't need the acoustic volume and power that the GS mini has.

You're welcome! Takamine makes great, no-nonsense workhorse guitars that are well-built and last for decades. They have very little collector or resale value which is why they tend to get overlooked but if you are a player and don't care what it says on the headstock they are unbeatable value for money.

Excellent comprehensive review! Now, I will consider the Taylor GS Mini very seriously since I am inclined to play with others, and sing aloud with others. If I were to have a guitar solely for finger picking and self-enjoyment I would choose the Taka Mini. But life is too short to have only one guitar. Thanks very much for helping me decide.

Thank you for an excellent review 👍 I have owned a Takamine nylon string classical which I used to attend a classical guitar class for three semesters. It was fantastically constructed and actually caught the notice of my music professor. He asked me to allow him to play my guitar and he was stunned at the tonal quality and workmanship. He owned a very expensive Goya and said that if I worked the fretboard, my Take would rival his $2000.00 Spanish handmade guitar. I now own a GS Mini Mahogany and feel that it is every bit as excellent as my 1970's Takamine. Both companies produce fine instruments and you are correct that they would produce even better sound by working as allies. 👍

Thanks Jolujo for a great story!
@constitutionalist39312 жыл бұрын
To me the primary difference in volume is due to the extra depth of the body of the GS Mini. The larger volume of air inside the guitar will usually produce a louder sound. The size of the sound hole is not as much a factor as you might think. It's the same principal that the Tamamine NEX body employs.
@randommann62409 жыл бұрын
Excellent review! I picked up the Taylor about 6 months ago in prep for my upcoming trip around New Zealand. I didn't want to be away from a guitar for the 6 week vacation. I'm glad you mentioned the medium gauge strings. I'd forgotten and was going to take an extra set of 'lights' with me. I also just got the IK iRig Acoustic to go with it. So far, I'm unimpressed with the sound thru the iRig, but once it's recorded on your phone or pad, then you can employ all kinds of effects to sculpt the sound.

+Random Mann Thanks for watching! Light strings will work on the GS Mini in an emergency but it's of course best to use the mediums that it was designed for. Have a great trip!

@marctestarossa2 ай бұрын
the es-2 pickup system in my opinion is way better than any standard under saddle piezo. but since 2017 the gs mini was changed to the es-b version. so i would say the optimum is getting a used pre 2017 gs mini-e. i use that for everything from rehearsal, all my gigging, busking, couch play, literally everything and everywhere. haven’t traveled with it yet, but it’s my main guitar and i consider buying another one as a backup. maybe i get one with different woods. ❤
@GLBProductions2 ай бұрын
There is no doubt that the GS mini is a fantastic all-around guitar, especially for the price, as long as one is not bothered by the smaller size and laminate back and sides. All the best with your music!

Excellent review, highly detailed and gives the viewer the answers to all imaginable questions. I am going to assume that any downvotes are from impatient people who are primarily interested in what they sound like. I got my GS Mini today, actually, having bought it used and not having had the chance to test it beforehand. The seller was the first owner, he bought it in the US about 5 years ago, and it obviously hasn't been played much. Wonderful, wonderful feel, love that neck. It's perfectly balanced, both sitting down and when using a strap, which never felt right using my dreadnought. It's got a big sound, sure enough, and I'll have to think about whether or not I wanna buy the ES-Go pickup, or try and use a microphone instead. (I have no skills for live playing, but I would like to try and record at home as my playing is slowly progressing) The Takamine looks real nice, tho, I'm curious to try it out, if I can locate one here in Norway. Thanks!

That's a full-sized guitar, so will be a lot bigger than the one in the video. I haven't tried that model but I have a GN93 which is basically the same guitar without the cutaway and electronics. The G-series are great working guitars and excellent value for money.

GLB Productions, thanks again, Sir!... I thought it was a scaled down jumbo per Takamine's description in their website...

Yes it's scaled down but not by very much! The NEX size is a bit bigger than an OM guitar, sort of like Taylor's GA or the Martin Grand Performer size. It's not a travel guitar like the Mini.

Coming across your video was timely to me. As I use it for self-gratification at home, I agreed with you that value for money such as Taka would be good buy and would not burn a hole in my pocket. You get what you pay for if you know what you're buying... Taylor might cost more but it will last if it's cared for. Takamine used to be made in Japan and was of extremely high quality. Now it's made in some Chinese sweat shop. I vote for Taylor.
@GLBProductions4 жыл бұрын
@@jolujo5842 Just to clarify - there are still plenty of Takamines made in Japan. Only the G-series and lower are made in China. Also important to note - Takamine owns all its factories - they do not use third party manufacturing, and most definitely no sweatshops 😉

@ajca694206 жыл бұрын
I owned a GS Mini last year and now I'm a TakaMini owner. The GS Mini is an awesome guitar it's just that it's sensitive to humidity (Philippines). The pointy ends of the bridge lifted after just a year. Had it repaired before the whole brigde flies off. My friend's GSM also the same case. I sold mine and just bought an Academy. I bought a TakaMini last October and you know what, it doesn't sound like the GSM acoustically, but it feels like a more durable guitar.
@GLBProductions6 жыл бұрын
Yes Taylor definitely had an issue with the bridges coming off in earlier models, to the point where many owners in Singapore would replace the medium strings with light gauge. Unfortunately this removes a lot of volume and tone from the guitar, because it was designed for use with medium strings.
@ajca694206 жыл бұрын
GLB Productions i agree, during the last few months I had my GSMini, after it was repaired I placed light gauge strings to avoid further bridge lifting. But the sound was affected. Maybe soon, I'd get another one but this time I'll take good care of it.

Excellent reviews, precisely because you provide exact dimensions, which is crucial for those of us with small hands. I'm buying the Tak over the Taylor purely because of that slightly shorter scale and slightly narrower (0.5mm!) nut width. Frankly, I prefer the Little Martin LX!, but Martin's fretwork is uneven, causing nasty buzzes.

Glad the video was helpful! Yes you could put medium strings on the Takamine, although you'd need to have the nut re-cut for the larger gauge strings. It would probably be too much tension in the long term, although even on the GS Mini I let the strings down when the guitar is in storage.

I wonder how the GS mini sounds like with a capo on? Did you encounter the same problem like you did with the Takamini? Just because I use capo a lot when playing, it might be a big deal for me. Thank you so much in advance!

It sounds fine to me, but if this is really important to you be sure to try it out on the guitar before you buy.

Has anyone had the chance comparing Taylor GS Mini and Takamine > New Yorker Style < guitar, like P3NYC?

How about takamine playability Sir, is it low action..easy to play guitar?
@GLBProductions4 жыл бұрын
This particular model has very low action and is easy to play because of the short scale length.

amazing review, thanks! how would these compare to a Yamaha Storia III ? I can‘t decide…
@GLBProductions7 ай бұрын
We do not get the Storias in Singapore so I've never played one I'm afraid. Just remember that the Storias are not travel guitars - with a 25" scale length they are just slightly less than full sized, so not really in the same class as those in the video.

Thank you for this amazing video. The mention of "details" that are really important for the sound (soundhole size) but also in everyday use of the guitar (gigbag handles and pocket size, etc). I own a GS mini and I agree with all you said on it...it can be too loud sometimes :D (I switch from pick to fingers when I want more subtle playing). The takamini seems like a great guitar also, but the trust I get from the superior GS gigbag is very important to me, as it's my traveling guitar.
@GLBProductions7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yes I agree - since making the video I have sold the Takamini and kept the Taylor. It doesn't get played much but is my only travel guitar :)
@pastorlito20043 жыл бұрын
I tried both of these and found Takamine for finger style and Taylor for strumming.

I would agree with that.

Great review!! Now I`m more confused than was before... I am looking for a new guitar and the most important thing to me is comfort while playing. Any big differences between them? Which one is in your opinion the most comfortable? Thank you!
@GLBProductions4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Caio! The biggest comfort difference I found was the string tension - the GS Mini feels much more like a normal guitar because it uses medium strings on a short scale. The Takamini uses light strings which means they feel very soft - it's very easy to fret notes but it means the guitar bottoms out very quickly if you play hard. Remember that these are both travel guitars - if you don't need the short scale & small size then there is no reason not to try full-sized guitars as well. The 'New Yorker' body style offers a very good compromise between smaller body and full-size scale length.

Awesome! That's the only guitar I am going to own. I travel a lot due to work and I believe the Takamine will suit me well. I only play for myself and my wife, so strumming hard is probably something I won't do. Thanks and keep doing great reviews!

Awesome review. I was wondering if you might do a review, if it's possible, of the Gretsch Rancher JR cutaway - another mini guitar.
@GLBProductions6 жыл бұрын
Sure, if I can get one in Singapore - the Gretsch distribution situation here has been hit and miss for years.
@AnonYmous-wq8yr6 жыл бұрын
@@GLBProductions That would be wonderful if it's possible. I would really appreciate it. I love your reviews as they are very thorough. I was considering both the Taka-mine and the GS-Mini until I found out that Gretsch had a mini guitar as well. I'm only 5 ft tall with small hands and I find standard size guitars too big.

Have you tried the Takamine GX11ME? What do you think about that? Another guitar which looks very interesting to me is the Ibanez AW54JR.. did you try this one? It would be amazing to have a comparison between these two guitars.. Thanks anyway for you video, very enjoyable and precise..
@GLBProductions5 жыл бұрын
I've tried the GX11ME - IMO it's not as good a guitar as the one in the video, mainly because it has a laminate rather than a solid top. I've never tried the Ibanez. Thanks for watching!
