Hello Michele. Fantastic progress thanks to your ingenuity and skill with the welder. Those rollers you made have certainly proven their value. You show that with care and patience, even the most damaged part can be repaired. Good luck with the conclusion. 👏👏👍😀

Michele great work interesting repair. Just a comment on the pre heat, as a long time welder, my understanding for pre heat are; distortion control the higher the differential in temp the greater the effect of upset (expansion in a localised area constrained by the colder area of the part). larger parts will chill the weld quickly causing cold laps and in some cases cracking.
@Rustinox9 ай бұрын
There are indeed multiple reasons for pre-heating. Condensation is one of them. But, for example, also the depth of the weld penetration.

Hi Michele, something I learned a long time ago. For welding round objects - pair a copper wire and twist it around the victim and attach the earth clamp to the twisted wire - which gives many earth connections to the victim. Good onya
@Rustinox9 ай бұрын
Indeed, but the clamp I have works really well even while moving.

A nice result Michel, the tapers came out perfectly. The welds looked no different from the parent metal after turning,so it's a good match! On the MIG wire cage, I think they are trying to make things sustainable, using steel as opposed to plastic and I for one applaud that. But they clearly haven't thought it out properly yet and they need to put a steel floor into the cage, so the wire isn't dented on the bottom rows . That would solve the problem. Cheers from the UK. Hi ‘Rusty”… My engineering background has me very concerned about home welding load bearing parts, like your car’s axles. MIG welding will generate a very different steel hardness / strength layer versus the original shaft. Thus, IMHO it may it crack or shear… 😳 While okay for a lawnmower, or pedal bicycle, on a 1500kg car it’s dangerous! You said the car is used for shows, and will not be driven much… but… IMHO-2, this is a bit like welding a gun, or other dangerous machine… Oops, and sorry is not a good thing to say after an incident… a wheel falls off and there’s a crash, or someone gets hurt. Love your channel, humour, and “let’s try it!” approach.

You're absolutely right. That's the reason why I normally refuse this kind of jobs.

Another good video. I look forward to next week to see your creative solutions to interesting problems. I have a question on the rod stretching - do you weld from the center out or from the outer edge in (toward the middle) ? Finally, you have shown it is good to have a backup lathe for those really interesting problems. I need to keep that in mind. Cheers !

Michele you have done a great job on those axles but I was just wondering since you were doing so much welding and turning why didn’t you shorten them so you didn’t need the spacers?
@Rustinox9 ай бұрын
That's indeed possible, but It's not my decision.
@hedning0039 ай бұрын
did i miss something in the last video?? Michelle..the drum is sitting further in on the axel- is it shallower than the original on on that Opel? otherwize it will touch the backplate of the drumdisk,where the cylinder and shoes are
@Rustinox9 ай бұрын
The central part is smaller than the original one. That's why the taper sticks out a bit.
