In Northern Ireland we call peatland the bog. I for one am a fan of bog land because I was born in a county that has a goodly amount although how long that will remain to be the case is unclear.

Thanks for the video. I've seen these on Google earth.. Also, I've noticed thousands of square or oblong patches of moorland in North Yorkshire and many parts of Scotland. These patches look awful from above... are these shooting ranges or water management? What are the risks involved in this type of land management?

I think what you're seeing on Google Earth is patches of heather which have been burnt in a controlled way to encourage new growth of young plants. This is a management policy pursued by grouse shooting ranges, because Red Grouse, which are bred for shooting on these ranges, feed on the tender shoots of young moorland heather plants. The principle is to maximise income by intensively populating the hillsides with grouse, which requires maximum amount of young heather. The practice is hugely damaging to the biodiversity of the hillsides, causes release of tonnes of carbon, and goes hand in hand with the persecution of avian raptors like Merlin, Harriers, Kites, Buzzard and Peregrines, and with trapping and destruction of ground based predators like foxes, stoats, weasels and pine martens. It's really the polar opposite of what the RSPB is trying to achieve at Forsinard. (Just a personal view!!)
