I have my Dad's tools he passed in Oct of 2020, he too was in Vietnam as corporal awarded not 1 but 2 Silver Stars. He was an Army Corps of engineers and a Hydrolic Engineer. He worked on aircraft and helicopters with the Alameda Air station in CA and at FRC in North Carolina Cherry Point. I have his torque wrenches of all Ft-lbs, Inch-Lbs, and even Newtons. The one the wizard showed from Grandpa Wizard is just like my Dad's. I also inherited my Dad's 78 Dodge Ramcharger with the A10 LA 318. We were restoring it together. When I work on an of my vehicles which isn't often as I have a nerve disease (CRPS), but I take out his most used go to bag of tools and set it out there with me. My tools his tools that once were closed firmly in his hands now Grace my hands as I work and they lives on as he does in me. Holding my hand with each bolt on or off every step of the way, as Dad did from my childhood to adulthood my Dad was always there to lend a hand or a tool. I didn't just lose my Dad, I lost my best friend. Thank you to all our Vets! And to those whose Dad's / Grandpa's; are working on heavenly vehicles, may they live on through us and through their teachings and through their tools. Thanks for reading!

I purchased the biggest Snap On roll cab made back in 1979 (the airport box, has springs and a hitch). I retired in 2015 and I still have it, they last forever. I was ASE master certified and GM master certified, made a very good living wrenching. Oh and I love that green color on your monster box... btw, I was taught decades ago to always store my torque wrenches at the minimum setting to maintain calibration.

Then I'm either more fucked up than I already know or I was born with the wrong parts... Between these kinda videos, my garage, loud music and my project builds, it's therapy for me, too. Sometimes it's rage-filled (tho I don't throw tools anymore... too damn expensive,) other times is frustrated confusion and a lot of cuss words. The best times are when shit gets done, I've figured out what nobody else could and I take one of them out for a drive ~wind, loud pipes and an open road because I fixed that shit or added that something new =ultimate therapy. It ain't solely a "man's field" anymore 😉

I thought the same. I have a cheap harbor freight one I bought just to change tires on my Subaru. I keep it in the back of the vehicle set at 0. You are never supposed to leave a torque wrench under pressure. It weakens the rod over time and wrecks the calibration.

I really enjoyed seeing your tool boxes. I started working on cars when I was around 12. At 14 (1967) I was doing oil changes, tune-ups & rear speakers / reverbs & then later car stereos for my neighbors & friends. My personal irony was when I was young I never had the right tools for the job. Then a few years after I was able to buy the tools that fit my needs I was able to afford new vehicles that required very little work. I always did my own oil changes/lubes.

75 here, wrenching since i was 7y.o. I consider myself a Renaissance Man. I am a shade-tree mechanic, even tho I now live on a 7th-floor penthouse apt. I build & sail radio-controlled model ships. I build & operate QRP (low power) Amateur Radio equipment including Morse Code. I do a lot of electrical & electronics experiments. I have owned & renovated 3 homes & a cottage in north-central Ontario (Canada). I hav maintained small fishing boats, a canoe, outboard & inboard-outboard motors, aircraft, & an endless string of cars & pickup trucks ('77 Ford RANCHERO was my fav)...GM, Ford, Toyota, Hyundai. Its amazing the overlap between The Wizard's tools & my tools. My sole SNAP-ON was a small crow's-foot for removing BNC (electronics) coaxial connectors. Most of my 'mechanics tools' hav come from CANADIAN TIRE or PRINCESS AUTO (approx = Harbour Freight). Its also amazing the overlap of tools from one hobby to the next. Now i own only 2 powertools...a corded variable speed drill + my corded Dremel 3000 with flex shaft. Everything else is a handtool. It's great that you 2 support each other in your endeavours !!

Thanks for the tour. I started with a tool box like the 200 dollar one had it for quite a few years. I out grew it. I had three intermediate boxes between the top chest and bottom cab. I used it at the dealership where I was a mechanic. I went from that to a 40 inch craftsman box that I still have today. I love the tool truck boxes but no way I could ever spend that much. The cheaper ones I can change if they fail or just add another one if needed. Nice setup you have there.

For tight spots check out the M12 Milwaukee cordless 3/8 ratchet. I got one to take the tracks off my ATV where I could only get one click at a time with the ratchet making it too time consuming. It also locks when it requires more than about 60 lb or torque to break free. Paid about $65 US for it on a Home Depot sale.

A trick taught to me by a auto yard mechanic. For harmonic balancer bolts. Find which way engine rotates. Impact socket on end of a breaker bar, long enough or with an extension to reach under the frame. Put the assembly under the frame rail. Bump the starter briefly and let the frame + breaker bar do the work. Just a short tap of the starter. I have used the technique 3 times, all successful.

In the late 80's I worked for a master mechanic that had only about 40 thousand in mechanical tools. These days with that cost plus the electronic compute tools, it's got to closer to 75 and 100 thou. area. He didn't buy only snap on , he bought for price/ value. He even invented tools that patents were bought by Snap On and Mac tools. We were lucky that the Mac man lived by the craftsman and the S n K centers in Phoenix area. He would warrantee those tools for us. It might take two weeks but it saved us the trip and time. I have to say it made buying tools from him much more acceptable. This was a truly honest guy, even before the internet.

Thanks for the tool box tour! I like your smaller box, your every day box. My ex was a Chrysler mechanic and his tool box was very similarly organized. He had a few expensive tools (Snap-On and such) for the same reason you do, that's all that was available for the job, but he also had Craftsman, a few Harbor Freight, and some off-brand tools that just plain worked. He also had a separate box for his specialty stuff. Expensive doesn't necessarily mean the best.

My dad who was a mechanic for 40 years always said that he buys Snap-On boxes because they'd last forever (he still has two of them now) , and Snap-On or MAC for the stuff you use every day like spanners up to 19/21mm, sockets, ratchets and screwdrivers etc. The stuff you might use once a fortnight, buy Sykes-Pickavant or Bergen, and the rest you buy cheap. He always kept a rebuild kit in his box for each ratchet he owned so as never to be stuck with a broken ratchet. And at the end of the day, put them away after a wipe with a used rag. They're still in the garage now long after his retirement and 99% still look new, even the old imperial stuff that he bought from retiring mechanics in the late 70's that were issued in wwII.

My dad has been an agricultural mechanic at a John Deere dealership for over 30 years. A couple years ago he had to inventory all his tools for a company to refund the taxes paid on the tools. Between both of his tool boxes at work, his service truck, and some tools at home, it was well north of $35,000. It's easy to make it to that number when you buy quality tools though.

I have some low end U.S. 80's Craftsman socket wrenches that are low tooth count, but solid, and I use them when I can because they were my first socket wrenches. I use a lot of Harbor Freight mid grade because it fits my budget. I agree that the more expensive boxes will last a lot longer, but the $300 I spent at Home Depot for my 46" toolbox was very worth it. It has worked flawlessly over the last 2 years, the drawers are all ball bearing, and have never gotten stuck or given me any issue. My boss even hit the thing with a Toyota pickup with some pretty serious force when he was trying to rack it, and it only made the slightest dent. I will try and remember to report back in 20-30 years to let you know if the thing still works.

1974 260Z was a one year only nightmare. Constant carb problems that were maddening. The dealer techs hated them! The next year the 280’s came out and the problems went away. The real dog is a 260 2+2 with Automatic.

I have almost all my Dad's tools and my Granddad's tools and I cherish them all. It never fails that I will use something out of one tool box or the other. My Dad was in WWII and Granddad was in WWI. And thankfully I was too young for Vietnam.

I'm amazed. I can't believe that you do what you do to super cars and exotics and only use basic tools, nothing crazy, just basic, everyday tools and a high tech gizmo here and there for a specific job. Thank you, you have told me that I don't need any more tools than I already own... Not that that will keep me from buying more...

One of the things that always stood with me in regards to tools was this simple bit of advice: If you start out buy a good toolbox (spend the money) and fill it with cheap tools, then each time a cheap tool breaks replace it with a quality piece cause those be the tools you use and need quality pieces for, the rest cheap will do the job just fine and you save yourself a lot of money which you likely do not have to start out with anyway.

I spoke to a licenced mechanic recently about tools. Used to be that they only used snap on because the rest were garbage. Now? It's not uncommon to see someone with Mastercraft (CTC brand) because a) the quality is 100x better than they were and b) unlimited lifetime warranty,. Break a socket, walk into the store walk out with a new one unlike snap on where you have to wait until the truck comes by.

I buy mostly Stanley now for hand tools - sockets, spanners etc - medium to low price, quality has so far been excellent - but I'm no professional. Cordless I use Ryobi, because again, they seem to be a good price/quality trade off for the do it yourselfer.

@R230Tuner Depends on what you're using the tool for. Some harbor fright tools are truly terrible. Others? Work fine day in and day out year after year.

Buy quality and you will never have to apologize - but buy disposable where it makes sense. I bought my roll away in 1985 and it still works like day one. It was much more than I really *needed* in 1985 and when people questioned why I bought something so big, I told them I knew I would fill it over time

My dad's auto tools from a career as a mechanic were supposed to be my inheritance. My cousins and uncles raided the toolboxes and all i got left was the dust in the bottom. Hell I didn't even get the old Craftsman toolboxes. The only tools of his I have are those that were in my personal tool chest that I'd borrowed and forgotten to return - painfully few. I've spent years now rebuilding my own tool collection. Tools going back a hundred years from my great grandfather, Model T kits wrenches, lots of tools from the 60s 70s and 80s... Craftsman.. Snapon.... all raided. No I'm not bitter.

You're a lot like me when it comes to tools and not being a fan boy of any particular brand. If it works, and it's durable (I'd rather not bust knuckles with a cheaply made wrench), then I'm all for it. Thanks for taking us along David! Zip~

I went the Cornwell route with a 54 inch box and 3 drawer cart. On the box, the sliders are silky smooth with double sliders on the big top and bottom drawers. A metal latch release goes all the way across under each drawer handle, and this allows me to open the drawer from any part of each handle. Not to mention the loud metallic click it makes when shutting a drawer sounds so damn good! I was sold after seeing the 3 power outlets and 2 USB's on top too. Very solid box and have no regrets. Box also comes with a Regulator lock that even gives a warning light for the battery life. The cart is okay and also comes with 3 outlets and 2 USB ports. The drawers don't come with latches on the Cornwell carts, unfortunately. You just have to switch the lock lever on top to keep them shut if moving around. My coworker had the same cart for over 15 years loaded with tons of tools. It stood the test of time easily. What I so LOVE about this setup is my keys. Since the box uses an electric lock, I can just store the cart keys in it and lock them in. I don't gotta take them with me when I leave work, and risk losing or forgetting my cart keys.
