Here's another approach to keeping your thoughts under control. I've made this comment previously, but since it's been so helpful for me in telling Screwtape to take a hike, I'll repeat it. As soon as a negative thought enters my head, I banish it by saying to myself "No stinkin' thinkin'!" (I know this command didn't originate with me because, as a former high-school English teacher, I would never condone dropping the final "g" in both writing and speaking!) Nevertheless, it's the quickest strategy I have to refuse to wallow in negativity and then invite the Holy Spirit to take my thoughts captive. It's been a lifesaver for me.

John's closing prayer from today's KZbin episode on Stories: "God, would you help me all through this day to take every thought captive so that it could be obedient, aligned with, in service to that which is noble and lifegiving and good and generous in spirit and loving towards other people. May I live today, God, the story that you have for me. Oh God, oh God, oh God, renew my mind and make the story today, no matter how small or obscure or insignificant it looks, make it a great one in your eyes. I ask this for you and for me. In Jesus’ name. Amen."

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in this, guiding me and helping me discern which thoughts are true and which are misleading. The process of renewing my mind is a continual journey. The Holy Spirit helps me replace negative thoughts with those that reflect God's love and truth. However, I often fall short. I'm not perfect, and there are many moments when I struggle to keep my thoughts focused on what is good and right. I make mistakes and sometimes let unhelpful thoughts take hold, but I'm learning to rely on the Holy Spirit for strength and guidance. As Ephesians 6:12 explains, this struggle is part of spiritual warfare. It's not just about the visible challenges but also about the spiritual battles we face. The Holy Spirit provides the strength and armor I need to resist thoughts that pull me away from God's path. As I work on taking my thoughts captive and aligning them with Christ, I realize how much I need God's grace and the Holy Spirit's guidance. Despite my imperfections and failures, I find comfort in knowing that the Holy Spirit is always there to guide me back to the right path and help me grow in faith and maturity.

Things are not what they seem. People who look insignificant to us due to their outward appearance may be great inside. And…we can capture wayward thoughts to convert them into servants of Jesus. Thank you for that!

Wonderful thoughts. As possible added insight, may I share the following meditation of Rudolf Steiner: Spirit triumphant send flame through the weakness of timorous souls. The thoughts that I need to take captive right now deal with myself - over going somewhere this evening to sell my books - and "everything" (well, one thing) is not going well. God's will be done.
