Geoff was one of the best singers of his era, if not ever. Yes, he had range, power and intensity, but he always had complete control regardless. He just didn’t sing, he put on a complete performance every time. Such an iconic talent …

Your reaction and commentary was excellent! You really got the main points of the song. Chris DeGarmo, the lead guitar player, main backing vocalist and co-writer of the song, once said that it is about missed opportunities. Considering that Geoff Tate is a baritone, his range was incredible. He had classical training, and in his prime he was one of the very best metal singers ever.

It was awesome to see the moment you realized the true message of this song. What an inspirational and positive message. Being alive and living in the PNW at the time, I was blessed to enjoy Queensryche live several times and they were BY FAR the best live performers I ever saw. Geoff is an absolute showman and the best male rock singer ever when in his prime. That whistle note is insane!! His range and control were unmatched and allowed the band to write unique music that transcended genre. The rest of the band is extremely talented as well. The combination of vocals and musicianship in Queensryche helped to establish a whole new genre, Progressive Rock. So cool and I love watching you discover them. Keep going on that journey, it will be an amazing ride.

You were quite insightful in your analysis! I liked how you considered each aspect of the music and each band members' input, lyrically and musically! And Geoff (pronounced: Jeff) Tate has the most expressive, powerful, intense, controlled, and beautiful voice I've ever heard! His vibrato is perfect and natural, and his notes just ring! And if you'll notice, he doesn't SCREAM the high notes (an E5 in this song), he SINGS them. In his prime he had about a 4-octive range! Anyway, if you haven't already lined up the rest of the QR songs you're going to react to, here are a few I would suggest: 1. "Walk in the Shadows" 2. "Anybody Listening?" 3. "The Killing Words" live MTV Unplugged 1992. 4. "One More Time" 5. "Another Rainy Night" 6. "Breaking the Silence" 7. "Eyes of a Stranger" The last two are from the album:. "Operation: Mindcrime" which is arguably the greatest concept album of all time. It's one entire story, so you won't get the full meaning of these two songs until you listen to the whole album in sequence. Still, you will get plenty from these songs even without knowing the whole story. I look forward to all your QR reactions! : ) They're very versatile and you'll be surprised the variety of songs they can do.

Lead singer Geoff Tate for the band Queensryche has a 4-octave range. There are few heavy metal and hard rock lead singers that can do what he does but there are some. A few other rock vocalists who are in that same 4 octave range category are Freddie Mercury for the band Queen. Rob Halford for the band Judas Priest. Bruce Dickson for the band Iron Madian. Tony Harnell for the band TNT. and Mark Slaughter for the band Slaughter. There are a few others, but this will give you a general idea. Being a songwriter, musician and vocalist myself and playing in several different bands over the years, we used to play songs from some of these bands before we started doing our own original songs. Also, I do like your channel. I just discovered it today.

Yes, one of the more under-recognized voices in rock. Plus, their debut in '81 against a wash of hair metal bands they were kind of typecast into that dumb-downed rock genre. They didn't sing about or have that "sex, drugs, and Rock n roll" vibe. They were more like Rush lyrically, but like Iron Maiden musically? I don't know. Just wanted to comment, show you some love, and support the channel. 🤘🏼🤍

I have watched several reactions to this song and you are the only one to mention the guitar solo not ending on the typical high note which really does work better here. I first listened to Queensryche in the late 80's and the original lineup will always be my favorite band. The current lineup in 2022 only has two of the original founding members and they are nothing more than a cover band now. The singer has his own style which is very different from Geoff Tate and I tried listening to them but I couldn't get through one song. He sounds just like any of the thousands of metal cover band singers.

[echoing most all other comments regarding Mindcrime] ... IMO, the best version of the song when it comes to how well everyone comes together and sounds so alive. .. 14:46 - this may highlight some of the best of Geoff Tate's upper range vocals (you'll come to appreciate more of his low-end) and, yet, if you're referring to something that nears a whistle produced by a male, you're going to want to check out Steelheart's official music video for "I'll Never Let You Go", album versions of "Everybody Loves Eileen" and "Sheila" and/or live acoustic in Hong Kong of "Sheila" where the lead singer takes it higher than the studio release while also showing how well he can do "She's Gone" live as well. 👍✌🤟🖖

Geoff Tate was untouchable in his prime before he blew out his voice. In true rock star fashion, he was considered a total jerk to be around. LOL There is no denying his incredible talent tho. Their debut LP was actually a Promo tape, made to get a Label interested in them. Every song on it is brilliant! Considered one of the best operatic Falsetto's in the industry, but was actually a trained Baritone. This is a worthy rabbit hole to go down.

According to the songwriter, This song is about missed opportunities and that you should seize the day (my insert). If you like high voices, try Steelheart - She's Gone for starters. Love Millie's voice. Denz Gonzalez does a great cover (among many covers). (Power ballad). Notable males w/ whistle notes include Piet Arion, Nicola Sedda, and then there's Dimash. Start w/ S.O.S. and go from there. He'll change your life. (These last 3 are pop singers+).
