Proud owner of a Winchester Mod 1200 - first hunting gun I ever bought at 18 years old and I used it for all my hunting needs. Took my first deer with it too. I have several shotguns and just love my old winchester the best. I have a Mossburg Maverick for home defense and my Winchester. The Winchester is just too long for swinging in a house so I have the Mossburg with a short barrel and it's perfect for the application.

When I was kid I couldn’t always afford shells, so my older brother and his friends paid for them and I would have to clean a lube the guns. This really helped me because I got to disassemble, clean, lube, and LEARN about the ins and outs many different shotguns. I cleaned , Remington 870’s, 1100’s, 11-87’s, Winchester 12, 54, 120, 1200, 1300, 1400, Ithaca 37, Browning bps, gold, Mossberg 500’s. I started by borrowing my moms 20ga Mossberg, but saved up and bought my own shotgun, a Winchester 1300 Ranger. My buddy and I both had Winchester 1300’s and we could cycle them so fast people thought we were shooting semi-autos. Personally I prefer Winchester and Browning’s, I own 4 Winchester pumps, a Browning semi and couple o/u. While I know the other shotguns work and are fine, I don’t ever think I’ll own a Mossberg or Remington pump gun. Winchester 1300 “Speed Pump” all the way for me!!

Both are great guns . A gunsmith recently told me that along with being lighter and not rusting , the alloy receivers are also less likely to crack than steel . The 870 is a superbly reliable design. Simple, strong and dependable. A great service weapon when made to be one. I’ve taken thousands of birds with my Winchester 1300. It never let me down and I was remarkably accurate with it. There were many many days I went one for one. It gave me a lot of great meals. These new service models with bull pup type designs and selective magazine tubes for easy change from buckshot to slugs is quite effective in a fluid combat situation. I think the modern designs would benefit from proven classical ergonomics. Form following fiction always has to be balanced. Nothing sounds like a model 98 in my opinion. A shotgun his real hard to beat. That’s why that particular shotgun was banned after WWI. There close devastation with the range and power of modern slug loads is a must have in combat. I remember a shots fired situation where I was in position first but unseen. After several of my partners, all armed with M4’s, took control of numerous violent gang members, I exited from the shadows. These violent young men where not visibly affected by all the fire power my partners brought to bear. When they became aware of my presence with my preferred weapon, every one was visibly shaken. Their composure melted. The oldest and leader looked at me with fear and shakenly blurted out, “What are you doing with that!” I was not really surprised at the psychological effect of being unseen, but the amount of fear my weapon generated in very desensitized persons was interesting to me.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns As for the question of what caliber in a lightweight rifle is ideal for being able to knock down big game, and have controllable recoil we spoke about in another video, this is what Savage rep said to me. " The lightweights absolutely recoil heavier than a standard rifle. I personally would be looking at the 6.5 Creedmoor as ideal for the package. The 6.5mm bullets have both better ballistics than anything in .30 caliber, and higher sectional density, allowing for deeper penetration. (The world's most famous elephant hunter used 6.5mm and 7mm calibers!) The 6.5 also recoils much less than even .308. It depends on what you are hunting, and what you are comfortable with, but there isn't much that the 6.5 Creedmoor won't drop easily."
@UnitedStatesOfGuns6 жыл бұрын
Excellent assessment. Along with the Creedmoor would be the 6.5x55 Swedish, the 6.5X57 Mauser, 6.5X54 MS. Anyway - you are right - the Creedmoor is the rage and comes in all the modern rifles. New cartridges are good for the gun industry and so they are good for all gunners - even if they are quite similar cartridges from the past. : )

My Remington Wingmaster magnum was made in 2004. Looks brand new. Are there differences between 2004 model and 1960s and 70s model? Older models are hard to find. Also have the 1300, very smooth action. It would be hard to pick one if I had to choose one. I enjoy watching your videos!

My brother used to own a Winchester 1300 back in the late 90's and early 2000's except it was just the standard field gun with pistol grip instead of the straight grip. The 1300 does have a shorter stroke than a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500.

Liked the 870 when I had it, but felt it was a bit heavier than the 1300 and mine was a fixed choke. So changed to the 1300 about 35 years back. Does everything I need between game shooting and clays.

I have both pumps in different gauges. Have 2 Winchester 1300 one in the 12 gauge and other in the 20 gauge. Then have 2 Remington 870 one in 12 gauge and the other in the 16 gauge. Don't know why and don't understand this, but I usually shoot better with the Winchester pump much better then the Remington pump. But I do like were the put the safety on the Remington much better and closer to me or the shooter I should say then were the Winchester safety is, near front of trigger guard. I found this very important, specially for pheasant hunting. But lately learning a lot about the Ithaca shotguns. Then after seeing this video, now thinking about getting the Ithaca and the Mossberg and a over & under shotgun then I will have a very nice shotgun collection. For some unknown reason I got many more pheasants with the Winchester pump then I did with the Remington pump or any of the single shot shotguns I have.

Great post! I hope you get all the ones you mention. Most people seem to shoot the O/Us best - but you may have an undefinable "fit" with the 1300s - I have the same sort of thing with certain guns and certain stocks. These are the intangibles that make guns and hunting special. Thanks for writing!

I have 2 Rem 870s one is the Super Magnum the other is the Marine Magnum. They are both very reliable fine working guns. My dad Has a Win 120, I have never seen another one like it. The gun is beautiful even looking on Google images I can not find a 120 that looks like his. Did they make a deluxe series? Both the 120 and 870 will serve the common man for the rest of their live even when bought used.

There were some with impressed checkering and lucky walnut that looked fabulous and an XTR model years ago - could be one of those; or maybe a custom stock. You're right - both the 870 and the Win. last indefinitely.
@jakeoutdoors96006 жыл бұрын
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I checked google images for the lucky walnut and the xrt. it is neither of those. His has a decoratively engraved receiver, very high polished smooth bluing, and the stock has a very thick lacquer or poly coat like a bar top. I would like to buy a duplicate of it just because he is afraid of damaging his while hunting. His has sentimental value to him.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I did get lucky finding it. I was going to pay it off slowly, but then couldn't resist just paying the balance. Been going over it the last few days. Found the manual on the Winchester site. One thing I would say to prospective buyers is to look for Winchoke written on the barrel. I don't know if some were non-winchoke, since I hadn't researched the 1300 exhaustively. Between the two, I much prefer the 1300. Buyers looking for one to modify for tactical use, would be better with the 870 due to the wealth of addons accesories available for the 870. It's still the work horse of law enforcement, security etc. The older 870's were really nice. I saw one awhile back, name escapes me, I think it's Wingflite, without looking it up. I would tell prospective buyers ,get both. One for sport and one for defense. Shotgun is essential home defense item. Keep lots of extra light loads in case it needs to be used, especially if you live in a wood house :).

The whinchester 1300 has a reciprocating bolt design is what it is. It is the same as the AR-15, and that is because when fired it uses the recoil to help push the pump back and aid in speed.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Lol thank ya. I just picked one up as my first actually "MY shotgun." for me. haha. Been checking it out and I love this thing so far. It's the Deer Hunter model so it came with a slug barrel that has rifle dovetail sights with windage and elevation adjustment, and the screw holes on the receiver to take a scope. Only sent three through it so far but it ran incredibly fast and smooth, and you can really feel that assistance in the rack back.

What’s funny to me is my Winchester 1300 had the ribbed pump and my buddies Remington 870 had the fancy pump your Winchester has and the woods are exactly opposite also(lighter color on my Winchester and darker on friends 870) I at first thought you had them mixed up. Idk if it was the gun or my abilities but many times duck hunting with that friend. Many times 3 ducks would come into range , we had agreement on which each shot at as I called them in ... I’d shoot two he’d miss his one then I’d take the third when he was just ejecting the first shell... of course this was many decades ago lol

In 1980 I bought a Winchester model 120 Deer barrel. My buddy bought an 870 Wingmaster. The 120 was more accurate than a 1300? And lighter. I bought another 120 vent rib gun,...bought a 1300 deer barrel it didn't shoot to my standards. My friend wanted it and I kept the vent ribbed barrel for my other 120. My buddy still has his Wingmaster and its still very smooth. We sometimes go Squirrel hunting with them,......we bought them after High School. About 1986 my brother bought a 1300 it was not right the chamber blew open every shot, K-Mart took it back. My Opinion is Winchester made good gun's till 1980,... after that buyer beware? If I bought a Winchester I'd run the serial number and confirm that it was made in 1980 or before. If I bought a newer one I would have to shoot the gun first*** If I bought a Remington I'd buy it for a bargain price. I'm a cheapskate. I used to love Winchesters but now they and the Ammunition company lack QUALITY control. I love shotguns just like the Pilgrims did.

Well thanks a lot. I was looking for advice on which to choose, but with advice like yours, I'll have to get both! 😂😂 Actually my dilemma is I'd rather get an 870, but I want a shorter barrel for hunting in heavier woods, and for home defence, but American made barrels don't have choke tubes. The 18" only come in cylinder bore. I want the ability to change chokes, so I will probably get the SXP because the Turkish made barrels all do. Unless I pick up an old 870, and buy a Turkish clone barrel. I have 2 shotguns with synthetic, and I'm dying to get an older gun with wood furniture.....but the SXP in a dark tan is pretty nice too......I'm so confused!

Hi snoozer - always good to store some muzzle up and others muzzle down. You can fit a lot more in a given area and oil from the action won't always soak down into the grip. An old method that works. Good idea on the finding used guns - will do. Cheers.

How many rounds should the 1300 hold?
@UnitedStatesOfGuns Жыл бұрын
Hi Audra, The tube magazine on mine holds 4 rounds in the tubular magazine and one in the chamber. Many pump shotguns have a plug in the tubular magazine to reduce capacity to 2 - for a total of 3 - with one in the chamber. The 3 shot limit is due to migratory game bird laws which limit total capacity to 3 shots. There are several variants of the 1300; Upland and Defender and others - with possibly different magazine capacities. Some people install extended magazines as you likely know - which can extend the magazine to the end of barrel - for 5 more rounds - but there are different lengths of magazine tubes as well. Hope this helps.
