Thanks gents. Enjoy your vids. I bought my first 870 in the early 80s. A beautiful wingmaster. I have owned more 870 Sportsmans than I wish to count. Good solid guns. I bought the Mossberg 590 20 years ago. Gamechanger for me. Things got tight a few years ago and I sold it. I bought an 887 Remington to replace the 590. Not a fan. Bought a 500 combo with adjustable stock, fully rifled slug barrel(scope). Not unhappy with it. It isn't a 590.

The FLEX is just fine; these guys are holding the stock like rookies; your thumb should never be over the top of a traditional style stock. It's a stock, not a pistol grip; your thumb should be parallel with the barrel. Not sure how these guys don't know this, as it's super basic fundamentals of marksmanship. I guess they've grown up around pistol grips where you do put your thumb around, and they're incorrectly applying that grip to the older style of rifle/shotgun grips/stocks.

Great video guys, best comparison of the two I've ever seen. I've a 500 for 35+ years, no malfs, no rust, and I really like the tang location of the safety. It's been through hell and still looks good. Furniture was replaced with synthetic once it went from a hunting gun to home defense. Sold the wood and got back half of my original new purchase price of $165 for the Mossberg with a 28", a 20" bbl and a full stock and pistol stock. Add a 88 with a 7+1 cap and 20" bbl for only $180. These are bargain guns that run well and, at least with the old one, lasts for decades of heavy use.

870 was my first shotgun and it was great but when people ask my option I always tell them the 870 is good but go with a mossberg. Remington quality inspection has dropped in recent years and the 870 has had very little improvements on the gun.
@coleparker4 жыл бұрын
I agree. I looked at a recently made Remington as compared to my Mossberg 500. I found the quality of the latter to be much more than the former. A friend of mind has an old Remington 870 from the 60s. Like the Mossberg, the quality over the new is remarkable as well.

Freedom group ruined Remingtons name. I'm still gonna go with Remington just based on I have broke 2 firing pins in my mossberg. But Remington did at one point make the better shotgun. Remington 870 used to be twice the gun a mossberg was. Now I'd rate them as even. Except I have broken two firing pins in my mossberg 500. Which is concerning.

Got my first 870 Wingmaster in... jeez just around 1980? Beautiful burled walnut stock and the shotgun was amazing. I hunted with it for over a decade before it was stolen. Today's Remington is NOT the Remington of old. I purchased a Browning Light 12 to replace that old WIngmaster which I like. I'm looking at getting a Stoeger pump now. I like the take down and action of the Stoeger better than the Mossberg. Mossberg is a solid choice tho; you can't go wrong with it.

Good choice! Been using a 500 since I was a kid. I’ve heard the 870s quality control has gone down hill over the years along with the rest of Remington. I will have to say the Remington has two wins though. First for some reason they are more aesthetically please and second if you are using a pistol grip the safety works better
@diversify2104 жыл бұрын
I chose the Mossberg 590 of the Remington 870 for one reason and one reason only. The action release. The action release on the mossberg sits behind the trigger and allows it to be pushed with out ever taking your hand out of the firing position. The action release on the 870 does not allow that. Having to move your strong hand from the firing position to manipulate the firearm is not a good thing to me.

I’ve had my mossberg 500 for 35+ years and love it. I changed the original wood stock for a new adjustable flex stock and immediately noticed the difference with the grip like you demonstrated. I absolutely love the FLEX model because you can transport it in a case that's as long as whatever the longest barrel is you want to run. Mine is stored in a 30" long case that fits perfectly in my tiny little trunk (2014 Chrysler Town & Country), as I can in seconds pop off the stock and unscrew the barrel, and just as quickly reassemble it. I'm thinking about making an aluminum walking stick that houses the barrel, keeping it free of debris and moisture, and just popping the stock and receiver in my backpack for hiking out to hunting spots. Might even make the upper part of the hiking stick house my fishing rod (disassembled) as well. Options are a great thing to have, and being able to offload the weight of the barrel to the ground as you hike I think is a great idea. Maybe even make a spot where the barrel can thread into the hiking stick to prevent rattle and not need to add foam inside the compartment.

The 1950s price of the 870express adjusted for inflation is the price of todays wingmaster. So ofcause there are shortcuts. But the shortcuts of the 870 can be fixed. Polished chamber, non-MIM extractor, better bluing/parkerizing. The downsides of the Mossb are more diff to improve. Aluminum reciever(sorter lifespan), trigger housing can break off, lifter can pop out of the holes in the reciever. But I don't think anyone would be under gunned with any of them

Weird. My first shotgun as a 13 year old was a Mossberg 500. (This was over 30 years ago.) After one range session, I placed the 500 in a case and took it home. The next time I took the shotgun out of its case, the WELD that holds the magazine end cap to the barrel was broken. The barrel actually fell to the ground out of the end of the shotgun while the cap was still screwed in to the end of the magazine tube. To this day, I am so thankful that this was noticed before firing the shotgun again. Needless to say, that Mossberg 500 was returned for a refund. (Ah, yes... The good ol' days when you could walk into your local K-Mart and buy a shotgun with no real paperwork and return it, no questions asked, if there was a problem.) That same week I went and bought a Remington 870 Express that I still own to this day. Personally, I found the action of the 870 to be WAY smoother than the 500 I briefly owned. The 870 action is also considerably smoother than the Mossberg 835 I own. (Yeah, 3.5" shot shells sucked me back in to Mossberg when that gun launched.) So, all in all... I dunno, fellas. I now own 2 870s and an 1187 and they all operate like a dream compared to any Mossberg shotgun I've ever owned and/or shot. I guess I've been extremely lucky and for that I'll be thankful.

I’ve had both shotguns… I still have a Mossberg 500… there are so many thing’s available for it, is super simple and straightforward. 😎👍 - the issue with the trigger seems to hold true on mine also, but it lends itself to making a straight back pull of the trigger rather than a squeeze (if that makes any sense?) and being that I’m a big time Rifle shooter it makes perfect sense to my shooting instincts and until I saw this issue in this video, it never entered my mind.

Out of curiosity I just checked trigger length on Mossy.410 500. It is a little long but ok for me. I have never heard this brought up before. Good review work guys!

Bought an 870 in 1990, have never had an issue with it. Bought a Tactical version in 2015. Don't care for the plastic furniture and the action is a little more rough than the older one, but it has had a couple of thousand rounds through it shooting clays. I like the solid feel of the 870 over the 500. I also prefer the safety mounted on the trigger guard like most of the riflrs I grew up shooting. Plus, you can shoulder the gun, dosengage the safety and fire without shifting your hand. The Mossberg you have to disengage the safety before shouldering it. Or break your grip and shift your hand.

I really wanted a Mossberg 500 in 20 gauge for upland. Unfortunately they are either sold out everywhere or are going for really high prices. I do have an 870 express magnum defense model that i bought back in 2010. So instead i ordered the field barrel and some parts to convert it to a traditional hunting shotgun. Money wise its the smarter thing to do.

Maybe some of the budget-budget shotguns like the maverick 88?
@insatiable_mind4 жыл бұрын
The Maverick 88 is a Mossberg 500. Manufactured by Mossberg with some parts made in the US and some made in Mexico, lowering the price. The parts are interchangeable. The Maverick uses a blueing process that’s more prone to rust and it does not have a receiver that’s drilled and tapped for a scope mount. Older ones used a single rail pump action but newer ones have a dual rail pump like the Mossberg 500. I’m also not sure if the Maverick 88 comes with two barrels like the Mossberg 500 often does, if you want a hunting barrel and 18” barrel for home defense. You could always buy a short barrel later with a longer magazine if if you want both and money is tight right now.

As to the 870 sticking; mine was made in the early 70's. I had to go a while without shooting and stored the 870 with a generous lube of gun oil (NOT WD-40). When I took it out to clean for the range I could not open the action. Frozen tight! Had to remove the BBL to open the action!
@jake97054 жыл бұрын
On the Mossberg 500A, I believe that was an easily replaceable *ejector*, not an extractor, that screws into the left, interior side of the action. The Mossberg 500A has two extractors on its bolt, which is one more extractor than the Remington 870 has. Therefore the 500A is more reliable than the 870 in that regard. Another advantage of the Mossberg 500: because the receiver is aluminum, that is one less part of the gun you have to worry about rusting! The 870's steel receiver will need constant guarding against rust.

You’re correct. We misspoke. It is the ejector. Good point on corrosion!

Used good condition Remington 870E can be a solid choice - I've easily put many thousands of rounds through mine (circa. 1998 production) shooting skeet and never had a problem. Factory, reload, low recoil/light target loads everything works - never a problem going point-click-boom-shuck.

I have an 870 express mag from the early 2000’s and while not perfect I like it. Early on it had the sticky chamber issue, it rusts kind of easy, and the action was rough. But after a few thousand rounds, good cleaning, and some polishing it’s smooth and works great now. I MUCH prefer the Remington safety location, because for me it’s easier to flip. And I really like the way the Remington fits me over a mossberg.

I got a 500 many years back as a duty long gun. I abused and still abuse it alot, but it never fails. Heck its the only pump action that is milspec. I bought it in the JIC pistol grip variant, but its easy to change out stocks and barrels it just takes 1 allen head.

I’m wishing I hadn’t bought the flex model. Like you said, the parts are easy enough to change in the standard model and the flex parts have been much harder to get lately.

I had them both. Wait, is the Mossberg model 88 maveric the same as the 500? Anyway, both of them were well made, functioning shot guns. I think i lean more toward the Remington 870. Stellar reputation, common availability of parts and up grades. If i had to pick one, id go with the 870 express magnum.

Guess its the luck of the draw, I live in humid Florida where you feel the moisture on you as soon as you walk outside, no rust issues yet on my 870. But who knows and I doubt they may put any additives in their coating depending on where the firearm is being sold at to prevent rust. But Florida is a good place to test to see how well your finish will hold up with any firearm.

You guys aren't kidding about availability being so low on shotguns right now since the pandemic started. I was trying to buy one since last year and they were all sold out. It makes sense to me a lot of people are rushing to get them because in most states you don't need a permit, so you just have to pass a quick background screen. Hunting license applications have went up exponentially, and people are also looking for an entry level gun for home defense. Anyways, I was looking at 870s and the 500 for their price point and reliability. Both are a great choice but I went with the 500 because of everyones repeated reviews of the 870's jamming and the 500's quicker reload. If I were to get a Remington 870 I would probably invest in some upgrades and the end product might be better than the 500, but I tend to want something functional right out of the box.
