I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

Around here, guys are so used to fishing gin clear water that they'll actually panic if that water gets some mud or color to it. The biggest thing I tell people is that clear water is a mostly visual type of fishing. You really don't need loud rattles or a lot of flash, especially on sunny days. Those bass know your bait is there and overdoing it is just costing you bites.

Thank you for this topic, Matt! As you know, this video applies so much to Chicago! Unless one of your fans has ever fished in the Windy City, one might think Chicago fishing involves super urban, very industrial, very DIRTY murky water. Well, it's definitely super urban, but the Chicago coast on Lake Michigan is dotted with lakefront harbors glistening with GIN CLEAR ancient glacial water that is HEAVILY FILTERED by zebra and quagga mussels. You can see to the bottom even in harbors with deeply dredged sailboat slips like at Montrose and Belmont Harbors. Amazing fishing, to be sure, but be ready to move with stealth and rig up with 4 lb fluoro when the sun is out and the wind is pretty calm.👍🏻

My favorite fishing is clear water small mouth. I trim the skirt down on the spinnerbait and absolutely burn it. Don't get any better. Great tips as always

I feel your pain. Our trip to Door County is coming up in a few weeks. We will be celebrating our anniversary so I know bringing up taking the boat is a non-starter. Matt, I messaged you on Instagram a few weeks ago about fishing this same area! This video is outstanding and the timing is perfect. I will be in Door County in 3 weeks and will have some time each day to try and catch some Smallies. I belong to a local club and the lake is a very clear body of water. Not much flows in and not much flows out. Friday night my nephew and I killed it on translucent cranks with bright accent colors (pink/yellow/chartreuse). When we went back early Saturday morning it was the complete opposite. Natural colors, slow presentation of small baits is what got them. 3" Dolive Beavers and Pitboss free rig with 1/4oz weights. The timing of this video and a little bit of explanation in the change my nephew and I experienced on the lake in just under 12 hours is outstanding. Enjoy your trip in Door County. Save some Smallies for me to catch 🤣

Clear water.... I might be strange, but I love my clear water. In my travels I had to learn muddy water. That's where I honed my pitching & flipping. As a kid I remember Dad taking my brother and I out for Perch. We would tight line with crickets (today's drop shot) and watching them take the bait. Gin clear waters, that's where I learned.

All great tips. I especially relate to the comments on the flats here in FL. Patches of grass or hydrilla, holes, etc in the flats. They are a little intimidating or look like a big nothingburger until you figure that out, then it's on!

Nothing but gin clear water up in the great northwest. We look for stained lakes to get the experience. When visiting family in Alabama and going out with my brother in-law on Ufalla. I feel like a fish outa water.

In Florida Green Pumpkin pepper and watermelon pepper work real good because Prey are always looking to blend in and hide from the predators! When a bass sees movement in the green cover it naturally thinks its food trying to hide ! That’s why I always look for bait colors that match the cover rather than a contrasting color !

Hey I got a chance to try Hover Rigs today in the saltwater and I caught a speckled trout on one with a Z Man MinnowZ in the Slam Shady color. I missed a bunch of little bites too. The Z Man soft plastic with the 1/8 oz Hover Rig has a slow drop and a sexy wiggle on a straight retrieve. I used Texas Eye swinging jigs too and the hookup ratio wasn't any better and I think the fish I missed were small. I will definitely use the Hover Rigs more and let you know how it goes, but I thought you'd like to know that it does work for the saltwater. I wish I had a whole bunch to sell, everyone I show likes them. Edit, I caught the trout very close to Langley AFB, maybe a mile away, in a big river mouth that dumps into the Chesapeake.

Ripple on water surface actually breaks up the line of sight making the fish harder to see us the fisherman ,and the line laying and breaking the surface, thus advantageous to us in such condition.
