An extraordinary documentary about internationally acclaimed potter Takeshi Yasuda. Filmed on location in China, this documentary follows Yasuda as he prepares for his 2013 ceramics exhibition at Goldmark Gallery, in celebration of his 70th birthday.
The film shows Yasuda at work in his studio in Jingdezhen, porcelain capital of China. It follows him through the amazing street markets, the Labyrinth, and we visit the crafts-men and women whose working practices haven't changed for centuries.
Yasuda discusses his love for clay and the challenges of working with porcelain in this intimate and moving portrait of a true artist.
"There is a relaxed confidence inherent in this work, the result of decades of innovative experimentation and dedicated work. Here now stands an exciting invitation - to wonder and to admire these miraculous, playful objects." - Prue Venables

love this at 11:30 - "I realized, 'yeah, I can make cup and saucers, but I can make anything! I don't need to name, I can just make things, and then think, how to use!" so inspiring.

I am 65 and started ceramics just a few years ago and fell in love with it. Your documentary in a lot of ways has made me feel better about spending the rest of my life working with and playing with ceramics, thank you.

Thank you so much for posting this! As a ceramics student, it is sometimes discouraging to hear professors talk about the difference between craft and art. Many believe that art is supposed to have a message behind each piece, and that it needs to be sculptural, and that craft must be functional. I appreciate Takeshi Yasuda's wise words when he describes his ability to combine the two.

His expressions at the end when he gets emotional... moving. To be able to work with clay, and have a life in art, his humility, it’s just so moving. Yes, he is as he says... so lucky. I’m not a full time potter but, while I’m engaged in my pottery and engaged with others in a community effort firing an Anagama kiln, I am at my most peaceful state and therefore... I am “lucky” as well. Thank you Goldmark Gallery for this wonderful film!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
