This is bloody fabulous Jamie… no Dog with normal prey drive is going to care about food in our hands, when in drive to catch prey. 👏👏👏 Thanks for the clear dose of reality.

Glad you made this video because I have found that my dog is very obedient UNTIL a live chase stimulus suddenly appears......then it’s as if I wasn’t there. It doesn’t even seem to matter that she fails to catch the creature. However, the high value food treats have worked to train her away from wheel chasing.

Exactly! I said this the other day - no ‘treat’ is ever going to beat a pheasant for my dog. Why do the trainers I encounter, keep insisting that I up the value of my treats? I’ve made my own liver cake, used sprats, cheese, hotdogs but I know these are not enough in the face of a live animal chase. Do you suggest the e-collar for training recall around pheasants, hares etc? I will look at the links to your training support, as this is the sensible, truthful advice I’ve been looking for!

I love this. Not relevant, but your dog is stunning. My collie puppy would most likely have grabbed the food as she ran buy it, but she wouldn't have stopped. Fortunately, she still follows the two older dogs and they can be called off moving prey, but I can only rely on that for so long.

Nice video, I agree with you, but it is also about training dogs for this scenario if you want a recall. I previously had two working dog line Rottweilers and trained them to return to an emergency dog whistle. I trained them with high-value food rewards to recall to the whistle. I also trained them to hunt, and they regularly hunted with me. I am a dog trainer and trained security dogs, where we would stop the drive on a human chase from short distances into a drop or sit. Training is the key, and they use high-value treats when training, or a tug, whatever they desire. You can't call a dog back from this unless they have been trained, and even that is a tough call. For example, I was walking my two dogs one day, and they were about 200m away from me. I recalled them, and as I did, three kangaroos jumped across our path. My dogs turned and went after the Roo's. I couldn't verbally call them back, but the emergency dog whistle worked. It pieced through the noise of them running, and they turned after they heard the noise, off the chase and straight back to me. So, you can bring your dog off this drive, but through training and a little bit of luck 🙂. Thanks for sharing, it makes a lot of sense.

Another great video Jamie, seeing is believing, my Belgian mal started taking an interest in cat's few months ago for some reason never seem to bother before she's nearly 7 now, she's bloody fast so if she decides to go after one she will catch it, so to the positive only trainers based upon what Jamie has shown here what should I do if that happens.

I see dogs run through ecollar corrections all the time when I walk my dog off leash at the beach or state parks. This is no different. Any ecollar trainer can tell you that if the dog is ignoring the stim it's because the collar hasn't been properly conditioned. This is the same principle. Anything you're going to use as a reward has to be properly conditioned. You build motivation for the reward, you add value to the reward. It's not about the food. When my dog comes, it's a reflex. I do reward her with food - sometimes. But she's not coming because of the food. Same reason an ecollar trained dog isn't coming because they're afraid of getting shocked, they're coming because of the entire training process.
@JamiePenrithDogTraining5 ай бұрын
There is no recall - no command is being ignored. An animal does not need to be conditioned to eat freely available and accessible food! It’s an unconditioned reinforcer!
@batesnpenny20205 ай бұрын
@@JamiePenrithDogTraining Correct. But my point still stands. I could do a similar "demonstration" showing my dog getting a static shock jumping up onto the sofa and how it has no effect on her whatsoever. And as I'm sure you know, a static shock can be harsher than most ecollar stims. Dogs will ignore food, dogs will ignore an ecollar stim. It's not the food, it's not the stim, it's the conditioned response to the cue/command. Just as you have to properly condition an ecollar, you also have to condition rewards. I have absolutely nothing against ecollars, I just don't like straw man arguments against any kind of effective training.
@criktun33465 ай бұрын
Hi Jamie, just to prove it a bit more, you need to take Truman over to the cheese, ham etc and let him eat a bit, then walk him back to the start line then release him. Force free will say you didnt show him the food was there. If you could repeat it like this would be better. There was no "reinforcement history for the chicken, cheese etc" so how did he know it was available as a reward? However this did show that the dog's senses are reduced when he is in a fixed chasing state.
@JamiePenrithDogTraining5 ай бұрын
If anyone genuinely expects to be taken seriously in stating that a 2 year old Labrador needs a reinforcement history in order to eat TOTALLY RESPONSE INDEPENDENT hot chicken, a pile of ham and 700g of cheese, then they either do not understand or reject the concept of an unconditioned reinforcer. If they believe a dog must SEE food before it smells food in order to be aware of the presence of food, they would perhaps be better suited to a different line of work!

@@JamiePenrithDogTrainingthe point it that the trap door to the next Heaven/eternal Universe could have been right next to him, but he didn’t know it was there. If you show him the food is available (as people do in training) then he decides to ignore it, the video would be more powerful. Pretty simple logic to improve the method, I’m not saying your conclusion is wrong.
@batesnpenny20205 ай бұрын
Jamie, I'll repeat: I have nothing against ecollars, they are a good tool with the right training. But this type of "experiment" is disingenuous and is going to feed into those who seek to have tools banned. Hear me out: You could set up the same experiment with a dog who has never been taught what the stim means, get the dog in prey drive, send him, stim him and watch him completely ignore the stim. Maybe flick an ear, but the stim isn't going to stop him - not without training. You know this, I know this. So now, someone who wants ecollars banned shows this "experiment" to prove we don't need ecollars. I agree that telling owners "just find a higher value food" isn't helpful and worse advice regarding food that I won't even get into. But you know food is a perfectly appropriate reward seeing as you use it yourself training a recall. As are toys. What about a ball-obsessed BC? That collie will turn down food every time over their ball. It's all very dog and handler dependent.
@JamiePenrithDogTraining5 ай бұрын
The video has nothing to do with e-collars. They aren’t mentioned in it anywhere and haven’t been used. It isn’t an experiment. It’s an observation of what the animal will choose under non-experimental conditions. It’s a basic example of a basic truth., based upon the free actions of the dog. That is all. I very much doubt that electronic tools will be banned because my dog chose not to eat a chicken. However I very much hope that the video ignites a discussion based on observation, and that from that discussion comes growth. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
