I've bought a few ex-mining cards in the past. Same here I changed thermal paste and pads before I even used them and luckily they worked just fine. But it's always a risk buying used cards regardless if they were mined or not. You never know how the previous owner treated the card.

As Actually Hardcore Overclocking said, the main risk with ETH mining is to the memory, and particularly it's HBM and to somewhat lesser degree gddrx variants of memory that tend to be problems. So normal gddr variants are not as likely to be a problem.
@robertt9342 Жыл бұрын
It really matters whether they are properly cooled and not overvolted. If the card has bad cooling then it will effect its lifespan. If they overvolt any thing, then that will shorten its lifespan. Often the miners will undervolt the gpu, but I do not know how then handle the memory. As for repasting and pads, a lot of that depends on if they have cooked the paste and pads. I had recently purchased a “mining” card and the thermals are all within spec, there shouldn’t be the need to immediately repaste the gpu or change out the pads.

As Bullzoid for Actually Hardcore Overclocking suggested, be really careful when replacing thermal pads, not all thermal pads will work with your gpu and you might risk breaking the gpu completely if you choose a pad that is too tick and or too hard, as you might leave the gpu cold plate just hovering on top of the gpu die making it ofc overheat and probably die instantly, you even might be tempted to tighten the cooler even more so it reaches the die but in the process you might just break the PCB all together or the solder balls in the gpu die, whatever gives in first If your gpu have all the thermal pads intact, even if they are a bit dusty is better to keep them rather than risk it If you absolutely have to replace them do your research and see if anybody had replaced the pads for your gpu model, ask what brand they used and what thickness or anything that outright ensures you are getting the proper pads for your gpu
@m8x4252 жыл бұрын
I accidently replaced pads with ones that were a little bit too thick..... this caused the GPU die to not make proper contact with the heatsink..... which caused the system to crash right away. I really don't understand the issue or the reason for a video like this and Specially disclaimers like ohh be careful when buying a mining card etc etc. People simply fail to understand the fact that miners see these cards as assets, something to be sold at a later date when it's no longer profitable for them and because of that they take very good care of these cards. As an ex-miner I can tell you keeping a card clean and running efficiently is top priority as it usually yields better hash overall which in turns results in more profits. The arguments like Ohh they don't take care or Ohh the card lifespan is lower is just stupid. ANY card you buy used, the first thing you should ALWAYS do is replace thermal paste and maybe pads aswell. ALWAYS. Because yes miners will repaste cards but since they are used 24hs, paste dries up quickly so they might not repaste it before sale. But I can tell you from experience, buying a used card from a gamer is a lot more dangerous because they want to save money so they will never repaste (maybe 1% of gamers will). Gamers overclock which regrades gpu life whereas miners always always undervolt. I can go on and on but you get the point. Btw I had my personal 3090 die recently and it was never ever used for mining. So buying a used card always carry a risk but if I had a choice, I would buy from used card at a discount from an experienced miner and would always avoid gamers card given a choice. Just my opinion.

Great info for those buying a mining card. I would have done the same (if I had the $$$). Make sure to replace the thermal pads for VRAM and VRMs, make sure to get the right height ones for your specific model so the mounting pressure is correct. Mining cards stress their VRAM a lot and thermal cycles (like from spiky use like gaming) is the #1 cause of electronic component wear (if not overclocking/volting), so make sure that you don't add to the stress by having old crusty pads on the VRAM. Also the driver will probably only care about the GPU chips temperature, not the VRAM.

The fact of the matter is that a decent number of these cards weren't built very well.

I hold the opposite true, a bad card subjected to a mining load is more likely to have blown up and be useless. If it's surived 24/7 operation for months, it's a good card. I've had a few ex-mining cards and they've all been solid.
@wertywerrtyson55292 жыл бұрын
Buildzoid at Actually Hardcore Overclocking had a good video about which mining cards to buy and which to stay away from. Short version is stay away from RTX 3090 and Radeon VII. Other Mining cards should be ok but might have a mining BIOS and then you need to flash the BIOS to get the best performance in games and the fans might die.

No offense, it is always 100 pct recommended to replace pads. The pads they give you is bad, you wont be able to see mem temps for 3070 ram and below, but it does affect the temps. I have many 3070s and i am waiting for the warranty to end before changing the pads and paste.

3:26 interesting the 30xx cards is the current gen, not some old ancient card, but still the thermal compound is totally dried up. Manufacturers should really come up with better solution, because current situation is not acceptable.
@ArcadiaP2 жыл бұрын
There is no real solution. You should be replacing your thermal paste every 1.5 years to 2 years unless the device doesn't have thermals to really worry about. Of all the products, I don't any of them have actual longevity to them, be it liquid metal, thermal epoxy or thermal paste. Thermal pads, maybe? I doubt it though.

In reference to the fans shooting to 100%, that can occur when not enough of the GPU die has contact with the cooler. As you suspected it was the thermal paste being ruined from the mining. I bring this up because when I bought my 2080Ti brand new in box, every game would override any settings in MSI Afterburner and shoot all 3 fans to 100% speed while dropping clock speeds. I finally got fed up with it and decided to re-paste my at the time new 2080Ti! As it turns out, nearly 40% of the die (a huge die, ~750mm2) had no thermal paste at all. I got extremely lucky that none of the die ended up dying and I was able to re-paste with MX-4 and it has been fantastic ever since. After doing some research I found that while the reported GPU core temperature may be under throttling limits (my 2080Ti was reporting 78-79C) the hot spot may be so much higher that the GPU BIOS actually takes control of the fans to give it the best chance to not burn anything. My GPU hot spot was hitting 110-111C according to HWiNFO64 before I re-pasted it.
@ocelot202 жыл бұрын
Ahh such a legend. Remembering seeing this video months ago. I bought the exact same GPU from eBay other day for £320. When playing anything it would right away go to 80c and the fans would sound like a hoover. Tried everything from reinstalling display drivers. Updating GPU bios. Even informing the seller I would be returning it. Then I remembered this video. Opened it up and the lack of thermal paste. Just bits of flakes. Putting new paste on it and at 100% load it now goes to a max 72c with still fairly audible fans but noting off putting.

Grabbed a 3070 ASUS tuf for $510…was an ex mining card…benched and stressed with 3d mark…bench results were ~100 points under average, while temps were lower than the averages I found…turned out the miner underclocked the card and a simple tweak with ASUS utility brought the clocks in normal range…easy fix…imma check thermal paste after seeing this vid…thanks for the tip.

From the state of that thermal paste no matter how crappy it is really look like it's been mining from the release date to now that looks pretty bad... On my Strix RX480 from quite a few years ago (think I bought it on the release year for the Asus Strix release version, I waited like 3 months for the store to got it), I changed thermal paste only like 2 years ago to Kryonaut and I actually havent seen a big improvement and I have recently already changed it to MX-5 which is about the same crap again and didn't need to as off course, but I wanted to fully clean the whole PCB and oiled it with WD40 so I removed the old thermal paste... Anyway the Strix RX480 cooler is poorly designed and I wanted to fix it but don't know how, it's basically direct touch, 5 pipes, only 2 make full contact, the 3rd only catch a small corner and the other 2 are almost doing nothing since there's always gaps between the copper pipes and relying on heat transfer from one pipe to the other barely touching is not so good. Strix RX580 is pretty much fixed and so much cooler while the cooler it self isn't much better but at least has a plate that spreads the heat for all pipes. I'm thinking to buy a 0.01mm pure copper foil sheet but I'm thinking it will probably only make it worse since it would require Thermal paste from die to coper sheet and more thermal paste from copper sheet to cooler and then 0.01 sheet probably doesn't have enough material to make good heat transfer to get across the 5 pipes and for last those cheap Made in China sheets will probably be all over the place in thickness. I surely can go with something thick, but then that would prevent the other parts of the cooler from cooling VRM's and other stuff as they wouldn't contact any good the thermal pads and going with very thick thermal pads aren't much good either 😕 ps: Don't really know wtf to do and buying a whole new cooler isn't a option cause I wouldn't waste a single cent on this old GPU but I really wanted to just prevent thermal throttling without having to go with high fan speed which is no go 4 me, I only go up to around 60% max fan speed, above that = HELL NO.

If buildzoid's latest video about examining cards are any indication... Good luck. Ex-mining radeon vii cards fail often. Nobody yet has been able to successfully revive them; most of the time only good for harvesting components from because the vrm's are fine. And even then, it's slower than a 1080ti with current drivers. So for gaming, unless you CAN get one cheaper than the big Pascal, you're better off with the 1080ti.
