Sawmill is prepped and ready to go as I tackle some more red pine logs on the bandsaw mill today. I'll be making 2x4's and 2x6's from these small logs while saving time sawing three logs at once. Watch as I take you through the sawmill process with views of sawing you may never have seen before. Don't worry though, the footage may be close-up but the sawdust won't getcha! Here we go!

Sandy, This is Tom. I finally figured out why I don’t have a square can’t when my saw is perfectly aligned. Don’t put your log clamps higher than your log stops. It will try to push your can’t over the top of your stops. Thanks for the advice and keep up the great videos.

Great to see your slab rack in action. One thing I have done with mine if it’s full and I don’t have a chance to empty it mid-milling is to lay the extra slabs on an empty pallet. That way, once you get the rack empty, you can lift the pallet to the top of the rack with your forks and just roll the slabs in. It makes for a little less double handling.

The more I watch you doing three poles at a time is giving me the confidence to try three similar sized Ash poles at a time to see if that will also work!! If need be, I will square up a side or two before going three wide. Does your center pole ever pop up when they are all still round??

Hey there Tim! I find it's a great time saver when they're all the s are size. I've worried about the centre piece jumping up too but fortunately I've not seen them move at all as long as they're clamped tight.

Keeping thinner pieces down on the bunks can be a challenge. I sometimes resort to putting heavy chunks of cast iron or stone on top when I can feel confident they won’t jump off the wood into my blade. Not sure what else can be done while sawing. Tension in the log can certainly be a pain.

I was going to ask why you didn't clamp that wood for your final cut. You've talked about the log not lying flay in years past. Two suggestions. 1... put a piece of plywood on the end of your slabwood rack, and as you fill it, push the slabwood against the plywood. When you later go to cut it into firewood, it's already squared for length and you won't have to restack it. 2... I don't have the paper wasps here in Nevada, but the wasps I do have.... they don't like WD-40 sprayed on them!! I keep a can of it handy, and when I find their nest, I'll spray it and no more wasps in that nest. If they are airborne, spraying a mist at them drops them Right NOW!, or they'll retreat and not come back. Good luck........
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy Ай бұрын
Hey Carl! Thanks for that tip about the WD40, I've not tried that but may have to give it a try. These critters sure fly fast as just the other day I was cutting the lawn and sure enough I found myself running for my life but the darn things got me about 5 times.

I was at my sawmill and had some wasps in the handle well they came out and one bit me on the back of the hand! It hurt some but after that nothing! Well the next day I woke up to a swollen hand! Then that day I went back to the mill and then again got bit on the eye brow and the following day around the eye it swelled I knew it was coming. Did you have swelling after twelve hours of so? I am just curious? I was bit by a bee black hornet and nothing just the sting but no swelling the next day those wasps are interesting. Now when I see them I respect them.
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy Ай бұрын
I think I got stung by some wasps (maybe the ground wasps) and it they had a lot of pain where I got stung and a good amount of swelling almost immediately.

Great information on your latest video. I have a question. I have a hm126 sawmill. When I make my first slab cut then turn it 180 degrees and continue making the other cuts as you do I get really square cants as usual. But when I’m trying to save time and effort and saw every quarter turn. I get a cant that doesn’t have 90 degree corners. Bed is level end to end, side to side. Blade is parallel to the bunks, and bunks are 90 degrees to the log stops. And using a brand new ripper 37/10 degree blade on white pine logs. And I’m leveling the pith. Because of the extreme tapper in the logs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for your channel.
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy Ай бұрын
Hey there Tom. I was going to ask whether the log stops were square but sounds like they are. Aside from that I would say as long as the log clamps are holding the flat edge tightly against the log stops and those are square then I'd think that would do the trick for square cants
