I want to go on another cruise. But now I have my granddaughter and she has special needs. She needs a trach collar and humidifier machine plus oxygen machine at all times. during the day and a vent at night and she is total care. It is a lot of work just to take her to the doctor. I can’t imagine a cruise but I’m so glad that you get to enjoy. Thanks for all your videos, I tell her nurses and doctors about your videos. You have helped me so much over the last couple years. Did you run TPN during the cruise. If so, was it a major hassle bringing all that besides the vent gear?

Hello. I did bring along my TPN. For this cruise, it was not a big deal. The airline allowed me to check three boxes with my TPN for free. All my medical equipment flew free. When we arrived at our destination, a porter took the boxes (and medical equipment) and loaded then up into a shuttle bus which took us to the hotel. At the hotel, we used the hotel luggage cart for everything. After spending the night at the hotel, we got an Uber to the cruise port. The Uber driver graciously loaded everything up into his vehicle. At the cruise port, a porter unloaded everything and put the items in the pile of luggage to be boarded onto the ship. The TPN and medical equipment was delivered directly to my cabin. This was all done in the USA. I went on a cruise which started in Europe. Let's just say NEVER again! Europe is not wheelchair accessible. The only people who helped were tourists. The "wheelchair accessible" train had a giant gap between the platform and the train car. Then there were three HUGE steep steps up onto the train. Also, there were uneven cobblestone streets, the rails in the street had big gaps in which my medical equipment wheels got stuck on, there were stairs and no ramps in many places, and cars tried to run me over when my medical equipment got stuck on grates which spanned the entire width of the pedestrian crosswalk. I was saved from being run over by a car by some exceptionally kind tourists from South America who helped lift my medical equipment over the grates. Also, at the cruise port, there was no place to unload a vehicle. Our Uber driver had to park far down the street. There were no porters to take the luggage. We had to lug everything between traffic on the street and people trying to unload from vehicles. Once we got to the cruise port, we had to zig-zag through roped off areas and maneuver around people before we were able to drop off our luggage. I share these two stories because the ease of cruising with a ventilator and TPN depends on where your cruise ship disembarks from. Leaving from the USA is a breeze. Leaving from Europe...I would not suggest it.

@@LifewithaVentthat is such a bummer when places aren’t accessible to everyone. Japan was similar outside the big cities. We went to public places (think a park) and you had to be in good shape to get around, no just be able to walk. These were not wilderness hiking trails where you need to do CrossFit to survive. If you truly don’t walk, I don’t know how you survive in the smaller towns.

A lot of cruise line will only let you use wheelchairs on board it you are in a wheelchair room, some are stricter than other, this is for safety, so they have the staff to get you to the lifeboats is needed. also the hallways are small, and the normal rooms are small, the wheelchair rooms are bigger, and normally the hallway are wider outside the room. If you will need things you need if there is a problems, leave it somewhere it can be seen, and let the person who is looking after your room, know you will need it. if you know you will need something i.e. seating in the dinning room, you can phone up before boarding normal at least 48 hours at least so the dinning rooms know for the first sitting.

Thank you for sharing. Which cruise lines have you sailed on? I ask, because I have never heard of a cruise line requiring someone using a wheelchair to be in a wheelchair room. I would like to know which cruise line(s) requires this because I rarely book a wheelchair room. I have had experience with Celebrity, NCL, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Carnival and Disney. Wheelchairs could be used by anyone in any stateroom. The only requirement was the wheelchair had to be stored in your stateroom. Thanks for sharing your helpful tips. What great insight.

@@LifewithaVent I have been on Disney, how hard they enforce the rules, depends on how full the boat is, I am mainly on 100% full sailings, I only go in wheelchair rooms because my chair will not fit in most of the rooms. on my 2nd sailing a group was causing problems, with there chair, and they had to show, they could get to the lifeboat without there chair, and they could store they chair in there room, without blocking the exit. I think all cruise line there, to stop everyone using ECV on board and something to remove them from the sailing if they are being a problem. Being on board, with every wheelchair room having big chair or more then 1 chair in them, you have to plan ahead so you are not waiting a long time for a lift. A friend and my wife, I could not go, was on 1 of the small boats, and they had to chain rooms, and someone in 1 of the other wheelchair got an up gard as my friend needs a room closer to the "hospital" as the medit needed to keep a closer eye on him. If you can try and get the wheelchair room, if you are in a chair, they are normally the same price but you do not get a discount normal, but they will kick you off the boat if you do not need it, and may ban you if you do not need it, if it is a last minute booking and the room is free, then it is fair game. I normally sail from Southampton, UK, the rooms have normal gone with in minutes of them going on sale.

I only clean my tubing about once a month. If I put new tubing on right before I begin my trip, then I do not need to clean it while traveling.

How do you travel with IV meds?

For my IV nutrition, which is about 2 liters per bag, I place them in a cooler with ice packs. I put a cooler into a cardboard box. I check the IV nutrition and it flies in the checked luggage. I bring along one bag of IV nutrition with me on the plane. That can be very challenging to fly with because it cannot be placed into the liquids scanning machine. After a very bad incident with TSA regarding flying with my IV nutrition, we were informed to get TSA PreCheck. My family has done that. Since getting TSA PreCheck, now I can fly with my IV nutrition without being subjected to extremely invasive pat downs and screenings. They just ask me what is in my IV bag. When I say it is IV nutrition, they let me pass on through without any additional screening.

I'm so glad you got to do this, but aren't you scared about getting covid on a cruise, since they're known for frequent outbreaks and most people have stopped masking in public? (I still wear a mask in public because I'm also high risk, and I don't think it's fair to subject anyone to that risk. Especially because not everyone is able to wear a mask to protect themselves, like in your case!)

Thank you for sharing. No, I am not scared about getting sick on a cruise. From my experience, kids are the vectors which spread disease. Limit your exposure to them, and the cruise will have very little sickness on it. A person can decide which cruise line to go on and the approximate demographics of the cruise. For example, cruising on Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Disney cruise lines; taking a short 3 day cruise and/or cruising around holidays usually translates into the cruise being packed with kids. Kids lick the elevator buttons, sneeze on the food in the buffet and do other things which are very unsanitary. If a person picks a longer cruise such as a seven, 10 or 14 day cruise on a more upscale cruise line such as on Princess or Celebrity, the likelihood there are kids onboard drops to almost zero. Additionally, the likelihood there is sickness onboard the ship drops to almost zero.
