Just up the coast from Ryde is Cowes where Saunders-Roe built the remarkable Mountbatten class Hovercraft for crossing the English Channel to France. Weighing in at 320 tons compared to the 11 tons of the one you went on (also built by Saunders-Roe), it was the largest civilian Hovercraft ever built and could carry up to 60 cars and over 400 people until they were taken out of service in 2000.

"those dolls" are Golliwogs. You could at one time see them on jars of preservative/jam manufactured by Roberstons known as the "Robertsons Golliwog". They were not considered as racially derogative at the time.

Hovercraft are cool. I remember going to France several times, as a kid, with my parents, on the old SR.N4s that used to do the cross-Channel runs. Those things were beasts. 400+ pax, a load of cars and capable of 60-70 knots. Awesome!

Been on those hovercrafts often as the wife’s parents retired to Ryde. We often refer to them as the “windy”. We either used to take the car on the ferry, or leave it parked and take the “windy” across. It’s a nice ride, even our Dog didn’t mind going on it. Our daughter used to travel across on her own. I’m not sure of the minimum age that a child can travel alone but I think it used to be 10 years? The only stipulation was that an adult had to be on the other side to meet them and they had to let the operators know otherwise the child would not be permitted to travel. Our daughter would often pop over by herself to stay with her Granny and Grandpa. Sir Christopher Cockerell designed the first Hovercraft, the SRN 1 which made its maiden flight on June 1959. Growing up in the 1960’s it was an amazing time. Space rockets to the moon, Concorde and the Hovercraft. We all believed the possibilities of having hover cars and hover trains! It was a new way to travel. Really good to see they are still taking passengers across the Solent today.

I remember my last trip to the US waiting in a security queue for 3 hours at Miami airport while an angry American screamed at the people in line for using their phones all this in the blistering heat after an 11 hour flight. Finally got to the booth and was given the third degree by the security officer. Where you staying what's the address how much money do you have when are you leaving. Just what I wanted after a long flight and standing in the blazing sun for 3 hours.

I have always wanted to return but t never had the opportunity. Getting too old now, hence my memory lapse. The Isle of Wight is such a lovely place to chill out. I probably would’ve recommended checking out Osborne house though. It was Queen Victoria’s favourite family retreat on the island and it’s an absolutely beautiful unique palace that has anaesthetic that’s kind of reminiscent of that of something from mainland Europe.

Isle of Wight is known for its big music festival ( which is in June) and dinosaurs! There's a few dinosaur museums there with fun interactive stuff for kids, several dinosaurs were found on the Isle of Wight. Queen Victoria had a big Royal home on there to, Osborne House

The 'doll' is a gollywog. They used to be very popular. Robertsons jams used to have tokens that you could collect and exchange for small metal badges of gollywogs in various guises, playing different instruments etc. I used to collect them as a child, and to be honest it never even dawned on me that it was anything other than a kids toy, just like a teddy bear.

Glad to see you all had a lovely day over on the island and the weather picked up for you, we always try to pop over to the island at least once a year and call into the historic docks on route. Shame you didn’t go round the Mary Rose experience but then there is so much to see it’s a push to do it in one day. You found the bell from the Hood, we try to pass by it when we go as my partners uncle went down with her, he was only 18. As others have said Osborne house is really cool although the kids may not thought so..

First time I saw a hovercraft was in the seaside town of Blackpool (which is like a mini Las Vegas) , don't think they use them anymore there as it was supposed to take you to the other local seaside towns

The dolls are made to look like the old Trademark of Robinsons, they make juice and jam. You used to be able to collect little enamel pins, etc. Obviously, as we became more aware, they removed it from their products .

I have driven those kind of hovercraft, 4 seats hovercraft. It was smooth ride and quite fast. Turning at high speed was tricky, but it was nice. I was driving on ice with that at the 80's.

I'm so glad you made it to the island it's just a shame you didn't get to see much of it. As an islander (what you call someone from the island) born and raised I used to commute to the mainland everyday for work on the Hovercraft for about 8 years, and my father in law used to work for BHC (The hovercraft factory on the island). The best time of year for the beach is in the winter when there are no holiday makers (sorry!) go for a walk along the beach, and then if on the south side of the island find a nice old pub on or near the beach look out to sea and if it's windy just watching the waves and cold outside while next to an open fire, you can't beat it. There is a monkey sanctuary on the island as well as a donkey sanctuary

The Isle of Wight is probably one of the last old style seaside destinations in the UK. The Gollis are a traditional Egyptian doll, they've been criticised as racist by people who don't understand the history or culture of other countries. Striped trousers and red jacket were traditional dress in Egypt in the 1800s.

There used to be a Dover to Calais (France) Hovercraft though they were far bigger with four huge engines and a car deck. Took about 45 mins. I think they stopped after the Channel Tunnel opened. Personally I preferred the ferry as you could go on deck and enjoy the fresh air and view even though it took a lot longer.

Great that you travelled by hovercraft. Not boasting but its a British Invention. When I was young I was quite scared of the Hovercraft because of its noise and the fact that when its door opened I thought it was going to eat us! Mind you, I was only 6. I went on it later though. It was called the SRN6. SR stood for Saunders Roe, who made a lot of the first commercial and military hovercraft in the day. I think I'm right in saying that the US used the SRN6 in Vietnam.

You definitely need to take the kids to a Lifeboat Station in the UK. Bembridge Lifeboat Station would have been ideal on the Isle of Wight. There are loads around to visit and kids always enjoy them.

There are a lot of "those dolls" in the south coast of England but it's a legal gray area. Some places have even been raided by police for displaying them. There are some pretty big reggae festivals (as well as other music festivals) on the Isle of Wight so it's a bit weird. Most people in the UK just see them as a doll rather than a caricature, by the same token the white gloves on Disney characters like Mikey Mouse are based on the caricatures of "black face" minstrels

All of this fuss regarding the " Golly " doll, angers me!! In my home city - when I was a young girl - we'd never seen a black person, and Chinese restaurants were beginning to appear My sister always played with her pink - faced dolls, I didn't. When the "Golly " appeared on the scene, I had to have one - they were so colourful, and not boring,! By then the "Golly " was appearing on food labels, there was no racism, because at our Universities, we were becoming multi- culturing, and accepting the same. I made myself a " Golly " som yess ago, and I 'm proud of him - yes it's a boy 😘 I find this racism nonsence to rediculous to be true, that sensible minded adults use this language, and induge in ignorance... I must also add, I'm 82 yrs of age, have lived in several countries,and worked with many different nationalities.

Not a GREY area at all, the current overly sensitive culture that has unfortunately blossomed means if someone finds something😴😴 offensive and reports it as such then it will likely be looked into by the relevant authorities to make a decision. There are no big reggae festivals on the Isle of Wight at all just two small functions this year one in May at a yatch club and October in a hotel. The Isle of Wight festival is once a year in June which doesn't really constitute weird. You can find absolutely anything in any situation if predisposed.

So pleased you went to the island but I admit it did make me feel a bit homesick. Sorry about the gollywog doll, that was a bit embarrassing actually. We have an expression on the island that we are generally about 30 years behind the rest of the UK. Last time I was there someone was even flying the confederate flag from their shop. Pleased you liked the beach and the hovercraft. Don’t forget they are considered an aircraft not a boat so you fly in them rather than sail. You did all the things I said in my comment the other day including the d-day museum so I’m happy you had a good handle on your itinerary. I personally wouldn’t be brave enough to paddle my feet in the solent in April so you were one step ahead there too. What was it they said in Finding Nemo? “Those crazy Americans” 😂.

Im surprised you cam down to the island. Its good your not the typical American who only visits London. I live in Ryde, and have been here since i was 5, when my mum moved back here. Most of us islanders moan about how shit it is living here. The lack of opportunities, for work, shops, nightlife, or for things to do as kid, or adult. Most of our industry is care work or hospitality. People somehow know your business, so best try and be a grey man. I've even had people come up to me over the years, saying they know who I can, but I didn't know who they were. The Hovercraft/ferries are expensive. Especially for the car. Ferries. There are some positive for the Island. It's a safe place to live on.... Especially if your raisin a the family. We have a nice countryside, and beaches (excluding Sandown😂). I've been told, especially from my girlfriend who moved down here with her family from Kingston Upon Thames, that the island is relatively cheap compared to the mainland. The island is a nice place during the summer, especially if you live near the beaches. If you worked in hotels like I have, it can be a nice place to work in, meeting people from other parts of the country. We do have some good events over the year.....
