At 5:15, you say the US is no longer a superpower. Couldn't be more incorrect. It still has the the largest economy and military in the world. Still has massive influence. Still innovates. The world's most successful technology companies are based there. Largest capital markets are there. I could go on and on. But, yeah, no longer a superpower. 🙄
@timnewtontoday14 күн бұрын
Perhaps I should have said “no longer the superpower it once was”. They years of American exceptionalism are certainly over. China has the ‘largest’ Army, by far, as well as the largest Navy. But the US retains the most powerful response capability. Aut’s just not the 1970s any more. I study this as part of my ‘Taiwan’ topic and gauging the possible US response to an incursion, militarily (unlikely) or by blockade and stealth (more likely). Happy to debate this topic as an outsider with no skin in the game.
@jfieber14 күн бұрын
@@timnewtontoday Fair enough if you want to say there's been some decay/degradation. Many would agree on some aspects (such as relative might, as others have caught up quite a bit) and disagree on others (the capital markets blow away everyone else). But to say that it's no longer a superpower at all just flies in the face of objective facts. It's no longer so far out in front, and the debt load is a concern. But it's most certainly a superpower still - and, in many ways, it's still the foremost one. Like your stuff. But you seem to have an anti-US tilt, and I have to call you out when it's just blatantly wrong. Thanks!
@timnewtontoday14 күн бұрын
Happy to be called out and be corrected. At least I’m objective. I have no skin in the game. I have no reason to be ‘anti-US’. Have relatives there. I suppose being mugged there in 1991 don’t make me feel particular enamored :)
@jfieber14 күн бұрын
@@timnewtontoday Sorry to hear about the mugging. Not nice. I wouldn't blame someone for harboring some ill feelings toward the US in that kind of situation. I grew up extremely poor in Detroit, so it's not like I'm overly fond of some aspects of the US (and have lived abroad for many years myself). Like you, though, I try to remain as rational/objective as I can in life.

For the first 10ish minutes of your video today, you seemed to be tap dancing around something that you really did not make clear. I am not sure what truly stirred you to make this the topic today. It was very pessimistic in your comments. I believe you to be liberal in your philosophies and politics (from previous videos and comments), so I can understand the turn of opinion. As I am around your age, financially, I am very optimistic about my investments. Investments is a long game and as such, one needs to expect ups and downs. In the down times, one needs to just sit tight and ride it out.

It all comes down to money. 1) If you don't have savings or independent income, you're totally dependent on your own government's handouts. As such, you shouldn't really plan on retiring overseas. 2) If you're filthy rich, you can retire anywhere and cycle through the jurisdictions as you please. Most people are somewhere in between, but eventually trend towards the first one, as they get older, incomes run out., things become more expensive etc.

Tim, it's pretty ironic to me that you claim cryptocurrencies have no intrinsic value when in the same video you argue for more control over your future and the whole point of crypto is to make the control of currency decentralized and thus no longer in the hands of one entity, aka the bank. You may think banks are reliable, but they are not, especially in times of turmoil. Also, the millions of hours of development and research gone into them also gives them value. Your take on them is not levelheaded, please do more research.

That said, do love the streams :)
@toonwouters463214 күн бұрын
Also, you say people have no control over the value of btc, but you dont have value over the value of the dollar or the baht either, and which currency do you think will retain its value better in times of turmoil? A currency thats run by governments affected by this turmoil, or a decentralized currency thats run by contributors all across the globe and can be sent directly from person to person with almost no cost without intermediaries like banks? Another way to look at it: the value of the dollar AND baht has declined enourmously relative to btc since 2009, its inception.

Tim, The Australian Pension is paid to you for the 24 months you remain in Australia once you have a permanent address in AU, you do not have wait 2 years to apply. You can even leave Australia during the 24 months, they just stop paying you the pension for the period you outside Australia but you must notify Centrelink before you depart but the 24 months still accumulates. How long you can remain outside AU is unclear I did leave for over 2 months during my 24 month period. Would have left more often but COVID stopped that. I did this to receive the Australian age pension. I have now lived back in Bangkok for more than 3 years and receive the AU pension payment every 2 weeks. I do agree with you this might stop at some stage so yes you need to have other money put away just in case. I know this is not part of your plan but maybe be suitable to other AU expats so good to put out the correct information on your channel.

Our retirement income comes from 15 sources of 4 different types (5 pensions, 5 unfurnished properties, 1 furnished property, 4 cash investments). We don't own any shares at the moment. We are French/British citizens, tax-resident in France where semi-insured healthcare is excellent and all our income streams are in France, so France's stability is important to us. We might invest in different funds...but okay for now. Time to travel and go-go. Isn't the Australian old-age pension means-tested?

First time watching your Saturday show, albeit at 10pm here in Taiwan. An interesting topic which affects every expat regardless of the country they are in. The only disappointment was from the opening remarks of income (covered relentlessly) visa (covered quite quickly) but the one guaranteed to have a bearing on us all was old age, mobility, health issues and mental health care, was not gone back to and discussed. Maybe it could be a future program on its own?. I saw a Hua hin KZbinr video a few months ago doing a house video, (nothing new in that) but, the villa community was built to be sold to the elderly including foreigners. I believe included in the common fee was people keeping check on residents and for an extra payment care and nursing facilities were available. My mother in the uk has had to sell her house in the uk to pay the extortionate care home fees roughly £1,100 per week. So the option of buying your own home with a care package as an option would prevent having to move to a care home in Thailand if finances permitted it. Apart from that a nice show as always, but in extended mode.
