Batman: Arkham Knight is a 2015 action-adventure game developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Based on the DC Comics superhero Batman, it is the successor to the 2013 video game Batman: Arkham Origins, and the fourth main installment in the Batman: Arkham series. Written by Sefton Hill, Ian Ball and Martin Lancaster, Arkham Knight is inspired by the long-running comic book mythos. Set nine months after the events of 2011's Batman: Arkham City, the game's main storyline follows Batman as he confronts Scarecrow, who has launched an attack on Gotham City, causing a citywide evacuation. The game is presented from a third-person perspective, with a primary focus on Batman's melee combat, stealth abilities, detective skills, and gadgets. Batman can freely move around the open world of Gotham City, interacting with characters and undertaking missions, and unlocking new areas by progressing through the main story or obtaining new equipment. The player is able to complete side missions away from the main story to unlock additional content and collectible items. Combat focuses on chaining attacks together against numerous foes while avoiding damage, while stealth allows Batman to conceal himself around an area, using gadgets and the environment to silently eliminate enemies. Arkham Knight introduces the Batmobile as a playable vehicle, which is used for transportation, puzzle solving and combat.

@@wolfgang_h3t Honestly I'm fairly sure that Arkham Prisoners barely get out in universe, and most of the time they don't get too far when they do get out, only doing like a zero victim robbery or something before getting dragged back. The rampages we usually see like League of Doom or full Rogue Gallery Escapes are treated as big exceptions and high scale emergency cases and usually get dealt with VERY swiftly before actual harm comes upon civvies. And in most Batman interpretations, you have an average of one to two villains reformed every year (Quinn is the most famous one, but also Deathstroke, Deadshot, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Two-face (through always brief), Riddler and even the Penguin), which considering Arkham being Arkham and how insane those guys are is a really fucking good rate. Like yeah, we get the impression from the comics that they're escaping every week and stuff like the Nolan trilogy really ramping up Joker's danger level, but the whole prison thing is not anywhere as ineffective as we're led to believe. This is why villains like Joker or Scarecrow are usually higher tier threats- They're the moral anti-thesis to Batman. The ideology of "one bad day" and that everything Bats does is useless.

The catch is that new game + is locked into Knightmare mode, which is the expert difficulty of the game and Riddler is extremely hard to defeat in that mode.

I think Arkham Knight has the best story in the series. My favourite thing about Batman is how he is always presented with temptations to give in to an easy immoral choice but through incredible mental strength and perseverance, he pulls through always. All the time. This is done in previous Batman games too but it's one of the central themes in Knight. The joker, in this game and within this universe from Batman's perspective, is characterized as this mercilessly terrifyingly sadistic and relentlessly force of evil that defies morals. And given what Joker's done to Batman in the Arkham verse and pretty much any other media, it's easy to believe given the uncompromising lengths of evil to get what he wants is a good representation of what Batman fears most. This image of Joker, Batman's polar opposite, who's killed and terrorised his closest allies and friends is constantly espousing ideas of what Batman should and shouldn't do. It's contextualised by the brilliant use of the plot device of the fear toxin having an extended effect. By this way, Rocksteady gave players a window into Batman's mind and what he is thinking about any given point in story. We know all the time what Batman's thinking about at any given moment. This level of personal connection with Batman is missing in all previous Arkham games. This is interactive storytelling at its best. We know what's going on inside the hood because his fears are being spoken aloud. This makes Batman incredibly human while still doing justice to his "extraordinary mortal among ordinary mortals" side of the character. It's in Batman's nature to be stoic brooding and refusing to give in to the immoral temptations that his villains, particularly the Joker, always confront him with. It's a story of overcoming fears with a great deal of perseverance and self control while being surrounded by situations that cause self-doubt. That makes Batman the hero he is and the story of Arkham Knight does that beautifully. I am surprised and flabbergasted by how well Rocksteady knows Batman that they were able to weave a story about Batman's perseverance and self-doubt. The story of good in people and in Batman and his strength required to outlast the forces of inward evils. Joker was Batman's fear and Scarecrow was the catalyst of that fear. I am surprised by how they managed to create a stoic but an emotional character in Batman better than previous games. Maybe they were being held back by Dini.

I love this because it shows Joker as voicing Batman's inner turmoil. Eddie's problems are psychiatric. His mania and ego caused by an abusive childhood, and Batman knows it. He's not an agent of chaos like Joker, a zealot overseeing a cult of death like Ra's, or even a common criminal like Penguin. There is a genuine problem he has that he needs to face.

That's definitely true. But The Riddler himself refuses to actually accept psychiatric help. His own ego won't allow it. A lot of these villains do have tragic backstories. But they themselves crossed the line so many times that many of them will likely never be redeemed. Some don't want the redemption.

True but the Riddler is an adult who is responsible for himself, now. And then there's the cost/benefit of trying to rehabilitate a guy who will just use it as an opportunity to escape and kill people. Plus some people are psychopaths--they lack the ability to empathize with others so they don't mind hurting people and treating them like objects. The Batman series is always fuzzy in the psychological sense...whatever keeps the story going or makes the villains interesting, I guess.

Overall, when it comes to Joker commenting on Riddler in this game, it feels like Joker is rather sympathetic and relating to Riddler the most out of all villains which was a pretty good touch. When you think about it, they have alot in common. The craziness, the obsession with batman, etc.

I did all Riddler (or Enigma in Origins) challenges but City’s. I lost my patience in City. I felt the same, but when I saw that Riddler will actually be locked up, I went for it. Origins was annoying and then lackluster upon completion, Asylum was an okay Riddler ending.

I went out of my way to capture Riddler before anyone else in a New Game+ run, which you can do at 60% main story completion, and I was hoping there'd be some unique dialogue like Riddler saying "you captured ME before ANYONE ELSE?" Didn't happen. In my head canon, every time someone else was brought in like Simon Stagg Riddler was thinking "seriously, even YOU lasted longer than me out there?"

You do know that charities are an extremely ineffective way to actually help those in need, right? Actual changes in infrastructure is the only way for Bruce with all his wealth to make effective change. The game (and the Batman mythos in general) constantly harps that Gotham is corrupt so who is to say that the charities are even being run effectively? Bruce spends most of his time as Batman and has other people monitoring those charities- not personally. That money can be dumped somewhere but not be used in the right way at the lower levels. Hell, the creators knew that Batman was doing such a shit job of actually helping that they had to create a secret society as to show that Gotham cannot be truly fixed. It's just lazy.

They're employing literal psychopaths to work on the mentally unstable people there - despite Bruce donating huge amounts of money to the Asylum.

@@mattwo7 The creators behind Batman had to create a whole ass secret society so that Batman wouldn’t look as bad for not actually helping Gotham. Charities exist irl but the situations they're funding don't necessarily get better, even when billionaires fund them (Bill Gates for example). But Bruce doesn't use his wealth and power to make structural change. Alfred himself even said that all Bruce does is beat up poor people despite having the power and money to buy Gotham and solve its issues. Bruce CHOOSES to do the most ineffective way to help people. Besides, I don't have much sympathy for the guy who constantly abuses one of (possibly all) of his adoptive children, going as far to break Jason's collarbone because he was about to kill the Joker. Batman is not mentally sound. He isn't necessarily doing this to help people but to channel his anger at the detriment of others.

It was literally founded by a guy who after going nuts from killing an inmate with electroshock "therapy" (which at the time of publication of his first appearance in Batman #258 (October 1974) had been falling out of favor) ironically wound up in his own jail. Also, out-of-universe, named after a city in HP Lovecraft's books.

Joker’s got a point though. When you get right down to it, most of what Batman does is just physically assaulting and incarcerating mentally ill people. He could be investing his money as Bruce Wayne into creating a proper psychiatric facility for them since Arkham was more like a dungeon run by man who was psychotic himself. Best example being Harley Quinn who went back to being a psychiatrist and is pretty much an extented member of the Bat Family after Poison Ivy helped her.
