As a business-school graduate, I can totally confirm this. Thankfully, only one of my professors at my business school made more than a passing mention of Meyers-Briggs, but that one professor was *very* gung-ho about it (and other personality tests), made all her students take it, and then heavily incorporated it into her discussions about management. Coincidentally, her classes were the least educational out of all of my professors - for example, her Business 101 class taught almost nothing about business, and everything about personality tests, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and made us do a group projects on major corporate scandals. Meanwhile, she never taught her Freshman business students the difference between revenue and income, or what overhead is, or anything fundamental like that. But, boy oh boy, we sure learned our Meyers-Briggs types and how that (supposedly) influenced our management style. 😄👍

It’s a wildly inconsistent test, and I’m not a performer.
@StranglerSix9 ай бұрын
The Myers-Briggs is emotionally inconsistent, and I say that as someone who loves MBTI. But as you dive deeper into cognitive functions and the archetypal concepts Jung proposed, it can be very introspective. MBTI's flaw is that it boxes a person into using a predetermined set of cognitive functions in a fixed order (INTP = Ti, Ne, Si, Fe). That's why the deeper you study, the more people suggest to not rely on tests and simply determine what cognitive function you have valued consistently the most.
@finpin26229 ай бұрын
I always think those personality tests are tough to do accurately bc there’s a lot of difference between the stuff you enjoy, the stuff you actually do, the stuff you believe, and the stuff you want to/think you do. For example, the “you can always tell what emotions someone is feeling”- maybe for some people this is TRUE, meaning they’re emotionally perceptive, and maybe for some people they THINK they know but they’re wrong and they aren’t perceptive at all. And so on. There’s just a lot of nuance to personality that’s hard to box in via one singular test or system.

I definitely used to take it too seriously, which is embarrassing to look back on, but I just treat it like a silly fun thing that has no basis in reality now. All this useless knowledge is just banging around in my head (I predicted Shayne's type correctly though!) I also looked up Smosh on Personality Database just for fun, and it's very silly. There are types for popular characters (apparently The Chosen is an ESTP... debatable), and even Smosh as a whole (different types for Old Smosh and New Smosh lmao). The cube test they talked about in the beginning was wild for me. You're supposed to envision being in a desert, and then you're told of other things to picture that end up representing different parts of your life. One of the things was flowers. I pictured a field of flowers off in the distance, but I was concerned about them because they couldn't possibly survive in a desert and were not rooted in the sand, just sitting above it. Apparently, the flowers represent your children and your relationship with them. For me, I thought that was a crazy result because I'm infertile - it made too much sense, haha.
@petitepommedeterre95079 ай бұрын
Myers-Briggs fanatic here! I can definitely agree that the system is very pseudo-science and has nothing to do with actual psychology. However, it's always fun to find out which type you are and why you make the decisions you do. Personally, I definitely don't think companies should be hiring people based on personality types. I would also like to mention that most of the typology community prefers the more detailed Jungian system (identifying traits like introverted sensing or extroverted intuition) rather than the basic letter typing (identifying whether or not you're an introvert or extrovert, perceiving or judging). So websites like 16 Personalities isn't usually recommended by most people in the community because it does not go in depth. The typing system can also be very flimsy. In the end, it's just a very complicated personality test! And has nothing to do with psychology/science whatsoever. But I wouldn't go as far as to say it's just one Buzzfeed quiz published by a random person (it's got a big community behind it!) Loved the video!
@StranglerSix9 ай бұрын
Yes, it is purely a fun way for introspection. After researching more about cognitive functions, you understand how flawed it is to type people into just 16 types. For years, ever since high school even, I've been an INTJ. Almost every description about being an Architect was dead on--except it kept saying career-wise I was best suited for work as an analyst, accountant, etc. I have dyscalculia. I should never ever ever work a job focused entirely on numbers. I'm actually the creative type and nothing in INTJ really represented that for me. After college I retook the test out of curiosity, and got INFJ. I guess I softened up somewhere along the way and lost my cynical antipathy. But now as an Advocate it's started recommending careers I've literally actually worked in the past, and described all my hobbies from drawing to telling stories (D&D). I'm guessing I was an Advocate all along, but I didn't have my character development arc yet. Being a Thinking type was very bad for me (even now I'm like 51% feeling, 49% thinking. just edging into a feeling majority changed everything for me lol) not just because of how it affected my cognition, but also because being the wrong mbti type was very confusing for me. I thought I was the worst architect ever lmao I'd say when you get the right one, it should inform YOU about what would be the best thing to do with your career. A boss shouldn't want to get their dirty mitts on your mbti because discrimination based on psuedoscience is crazy. Imagine if I didn't get a promotion because I'm a Virgo sun, Taurus Moon, Virgo Rising. Wild. (Also if you want real psuedoscience do an enneagram personality test. Those are trash. You get a primary and secondary personality type, except your secondary type is limited to the two neighboring types to your primary. If you have even a hint of nuance or individuality to your personality it will not work, you won't identify with your result!)

When this podcast first came out, my husband and I were so excited. We love you guys. Now that youve taken the Myers Briggs it all makes even more sense. He's an ENFJ and I'm and INFJ! Fits so well. Also make sure you guys read through the whole descriptions of your personality types. It's super interesting and helps with self growth. ❤

Wow I’m a Myers Briggs nerd, I’ve been studying up on it a bit recently and I’ve taken the test many times in the last 8 years. I’m an INFP 🙋🏼♀️ And oh my gosh, listening to you both answer the questions and having seen a lot of content with you guys, I knew in my heart what types you would both get and when you said your results I was like YES! Oh my gosh 😂 A close friend and my sister are both INFJs and my mom is an ENFJ. I have always felt drawn to Amanda since she seems like such a fun bubbly personality who’s also really empathetic and inclusive. And we’re both tall 😂 I don’t know exactly how tall Amanda is but I’m 5’10”. Also ENFJs are often a really great match for INFPs apparently since they tend to be the sort of extraverts that want to take introverts under their wing and think their interests and passions are really cool and try to encourage them. Which I was totally seeing as Amanda was talking with Shane about group settings and books. Both of your results are so accurate and I love that 😂😅🙏🏻

@johnjon46889 ай бұрын
@ToriKlepto it literally gives you the results you are looking for. It's no better than a horoscope.
@Christiangirl7279 ай бұрын
@@johnjon4688 hmmm… I wouldn’t necessarily say that- there are aspects of this test (extroversion/introversion for example) that are used in more credited personality assessments (like the Big 5). It also tells you the positive and negative aspects of yourself (not necessarily traits I would be looking for) but that fit nonetheless. More than that, many companies use it to see if employees will work well together (and often times it is pretty accurate) It is definitely not 100% or even the most scientific assessment- but I wouldn’t say it’s just telling you the answers you’re looking for. Again totally fine to disagree- not a hill I will die on, just my opinion

Dont worry, just because a theory isnt backed enough due to people being ignorant to other people's views who necessarily aren't "top tier experts" on it doesnt make your observations any lesser. The leading "elite" in science has always been like this. And I doubt it will ever chance. @@Christiangirl727

And as it has been written and mentioned multiple times; the author(s) never intended this to be taken as an ultimate "truth" about your possible personality. How hard is that for some people to get? Nothing is set in stone. Have people not heard of this proverb at all?@@Christiangirl727

Thank you for being so open and honest. I'm autistic and I've always had social jobs like working on a cruiseship, but since COVID I've been dealing with a lot more social stress and I keep blaming myself and comparing myself with past me. It's so comforting to hear that Shayne, who comes across as socially incredibly adept, also struggles with the same self doubt I also feel. Hearing I'm not alone in this, makes me feel like I'm not as worthless as I thought. So thank you for your openheartedness in this podcast.
