Great ideas! As always, I learn so much from your channel. Thank you, Pam & Jim for all you do!!❤

Nice, you've reminded me of the trip my Grandmother made. She was bringing along some southern California fresh fruit to her friend up in Reno, NV. They plugged in the fridge, in the car & hit the road. When they arrived it was a hot soup ! The plug was inserted upside-down which reversed the polarity and made it a cooker instead of a fridge. 😮 💞🌻🦋

I used to use the 2 Liter soda bottles to freeze water in for keeping food cold when the kids were little. That way as the ice thaws the water hasn't had anyone's hands in it and being a large piece, it lasted longer. I would also sometimes wrap a few of the frozen bottles together in bath towels when we were going somewhere where there may not be drinking water. With it being water if it thawed there were no concerns with food safety.

I’ve done that with several smaller water bottles so they surround the food better.

I freeze everything that can be frozen and put it all in one hard shell cooler. Bottles of water, juice gets frozen and placed in separate cooler to keep traveling drinks, sandwiches, salads cold. I have grocery mylar bags to put frozen items in and that helps also. If it's hot I will put a blanket over and around the cooler and keep it shaded in the car.

that is so thoughtful of you because some of us can't afford another expense and have to make due with what we have thanks 🙂🌻

I do the same but sometimes do the sous vide route. Frozen raw chicken takes 3 hours max and I cook it in the same cooler that I take it in completely seasoned and ready to cook, no microwave required. I cut a hole the same size as the sous vide wand in the cooler cover and cover it with duct tape when transporting food in it. I can also heat leftovers that have been vacuum sealed very easily. A chamber sealer would solve most of your problems. 2 coolers, 1 larger to keep the bulk of your food and 1 smaller to cook in and initially transport food in also.

Dry ice works great for a couple of days on the road. The fuller a cooler is, the colder it keeps. Stuff open space with newspaper or plastic grocery bags.

What about “meals in a jar” - freeze dried or dehydrated foods that only need to be rehydrated with hot water? I’m thinking soups, stews, etc. That would work for your trip back home.

Once again, absolutely genius! You are two smart cookies for sure. At first, when you brought up dry ice, my thought was--CO2 is heavier than air, won't it pool in the car? But, knowing how careful and safe you are, I started to think instead of just react. Small amount of dry ice, the resultant CO2 mixing with air in the smaller cooler, further mixing with air in the larger container, mixing with air in the car, air in the car is turbulent because of the window being opened--no problem. If you were really concerned, take a potted plant with and let the tiny bit of extra CO2 feed it while it generates O2 to compensate (Joke--lame, but it made me smile). So, there is another side effect of your channel--it spurs the gray matter into action. Thanks, Guys. 😉 Actually, the only drawback I can see is the noise a cracked window can create. But, I'd bet you have a solution for that...just sayin'

I am wrestling with the same concerns now, thinking the same idea of cooler in a cooler for frozen food. I like the dry ice idea but not practical for me. I plan to make a box out of reflectix to fit the smaller cooler in. Some folks wrap the larger cooler in reflectix with good results but that's a bit much for me. Looking forward to seeing what you decide and how it works out. Great, great channels you have created. Thank you.

I was looking into a purchase of a car freezer too. As I was looking at one being for sale at a truck stop, I read on the box that it would keep the food 30° cooler than the air surrounding it. That means if it is 100° in your car when it isn't running, it would only cool the food down to 70°. That made me rethink my desire to buy a car cooler/freezer. If anyone here has more info on the topic, I would appreciate you letting me know.

Pam we have the freezer-refrigerator cooler for the basement of the RV that plugs into power in the storage bay. Unless you have a large power bank or soloist system to run it- it’s not worth it.

Thanks for some good ideas, I hadn’t considered dry ice before. I do car camping in a cargo minivan and have a 25qt fridge or freezer (but not both). While I usually use it in refrigerator mode, I’ve been wondering about using it as a freezer to bring along some frozen prepped meals, and frozen broccoli florets, a couple of blue-ice packs. Then use a soft sided Titan cooler with blue-ice packs rotated daily from freezer. What I would carry in the Titan cooler is fresh fruit like blue berries, produce, eggs, cottage cheese, maybe a couple of milk in 1 pint containers. Do you think that would work?

Your Joytutus car refrigerator can also be used as a freezer and you already own one so no additional appliances need to be purchased.

Great ideas I would not have thought of dry ice. You might want to purchase a refrigerator thermometer to carry on your travels. My sister once had a room with a "dead fridge" and the hotel said they couldn't replace it until she checked out. Fortunately, they were able to get her another room (with a working fridge) the next day. But she has had some that barely cool.

i do not know how far you have to travel but you don”t need dry ice, I took my daughter some fresh sausage and used frozen butter beans as my ice packs for the cooler. She lives just over 7 hours away and the cooler I used was not a standard cooler. It was soft and collapsable. Butter beans were still frozen solid and sausage was still very cold. The dry ice just seems like an accident waiting happen. I know y’all are always very careful. Just thought I’d share my experience on an 7 hour trip.

What about freeze drying some meals quickly before you go?
