Leave them home. Haha. But seriously when I take my kids it's more about just getting out and having fun with them. Make sure they have an enjoyable experience and when they get older and more independent they will be more interested in joining you. Also take into consideration the tag you have. General season is a family hunt. Limited entry (elk or deer) very likely kids aren't coming. Antelope hunt, kids are definitely going since you'll see lots of animals and you can generally hunt from vehicles.

Started both my son and daughter hunting at a very young age as well. You have to remember its about spending time with family and not to put any pressure on anyone. If you are successful then that is a plus. Look at it as a learning experience and nothing else. My son is 17 and daughter 21 now and both are very accomplished hunters. But are very capable in the backcountry on their own as well.

I've been taking both my girls hunting since they were born, the hardest part is keeping them quiet when the time comes. Next year my oldest can start hunting her own deer and she already has an advantage from learning all these years.

Always keep them warm and pack lots of "fun snacks" that keep them busy - trail mix, goldfish, anything that takes them a long time to eat (gotta pick out all the red m&ms, then all the green ones, then all the yellow ones, then all the raisins...keeps 'em busy). Hot chocolate is a must. Go ahead and take breaks. Make everything an adventure, even if it is just catching grasshoppers around the tent. My son bugled in a bull for us when he was 3, but terrain created an issue and the bull hung up. Another time I set my kids up as callers (one had a hoochie mama, one had a rattle bag) and I crept forward and gave them hand signals for when to call. They got a little nervous (there were wolves howling nearby) and I had to creep back towards them to make them feel safer. We had a bull come right where I expected, but because I had moved back to the kids, I didn't have a decent shot with my bow. We played with the elk all morning. Watching their faces light up when the bull would bugle back at their calls was more important than getting that bull that morning. Take them while you can - you never know how limited your days are. So glad we did everything we did while we could.

My dad started taking my brothers and me along years before we could carry a rifle (maybe 7 or 8 years of age). Sixty years later those are the most vivid, cherished memories of my childhood. It's great to see the Baty's creating the same memories for Wade. Kirstin, I hope your hunt is successful. How ever you define that. God Bless You All.

When I was 18 I started taking my 8 & 11 year old brothers out for deer an turkey back east. Turkey was a better starter hunt because it's faster paced and "exciting" as well as generally warmer weather during season. Now out west and with my own kids I am mostly have been taking them out walking for grouse and rabbits, calling predators or during scouting season when it is more comfortable weather. Pronghorn has been the intro to big game for all of them so far, mild weather and almost no chance of getting bored, ad in easier terrain than elk or deer and you have a winning combo in my opinion.
