@@katelynbrown98 It depends if they understand the 'smarter' part. There's so many layers to it. The basics of 'work hard' make sense, to an extend. This is all sort of digestible for a large group of people but not all. The layers above it usually have to do with taxes, applying for funds or help, and finding good deals. That layer is the most difficult for most people too understand. If you've never have to worry about money, a large portion of those layers are not important to learn or look into. However those who are actually rich are usually those who pinch every penny to their advantage and understand all of those rules, and know when they are getting a bad deal. Her mother is currently the major problem in her life (other than her own poor impulse control and financial education). Her dad said don't get the loan for the car but her mom said just do it. Her mom put her in this situation. Now the mom is charging her $600 for living there and she doesn't even get a room. Not to mention saying she is "saving so much money" but in reality she isn't. The mom is goading/encouraging her to go out and she pays for the outing, likely for the both of them, so she's spending even more. The mom gets money from her to pay the apt/house rent as well as saving money on food since the mom likely guilts her to pay for food outside. The mom is bad mouthing her to her relatives and now she has a poor reputation in her extended family's mind. Would her extended family help her out if she asks... probably not due to her mom's lies. wow. If she doesn't wake up she's going to be trapped in this cycle and in debt forever. her mom's SO manipulative.
@KurenaiKimitsu Жыл бұрын
@@rsimmons1980 I dont believe that is true. Remember she said there was another renter who is also paying rent money. She doesn't have her own room, assuming the other renter is taking whatever spare room there is. and mom's rent is $1200. So if the daughter is paying half the rent, and likely the other renter is paying half the rent ($600). then mom only pays bills and possibly some food. Mom entice the daughter to go out to eat which she ends up forking money over. Toxic mother in the end.

@@nothingtoseehere96 I think this has come up about 3 times now in his channel. I didn't know this was a possibiolity either. Sriously though, downpayment loans are predatory. If you can't afford a downpayment, chances are you can't afford the car payment. Tip for ANYONE planning to get AND FINACNE a car should do this: Try to put into savings for a year the same ammount that you wish your target monthly car payment, AND get an estimate on insurance of how much it will cost so you can set that aside as well on a monthly basis into savings before you get that car. For a year practice putting away the car payment and insurance payment on a monthly basis to see if you can actually afford the car. If you can't do that for a year what makes you think you'll be able to pay for the car and insurance once you buy it. Notice I didn't even include gas or maintenance fees or DMV fees in there. If you can do this for a year, you should have a nice down payment for said car and not have to finance the downpayment as well as the payment you will need for one year's worth of insurance. And if you're paying for public transportation don't try to redo this formula by subtracting the transport fees from the savings allowance as this should help you practice budgeting for gas as well. If anything practice putting in an extra 40 at least a week into that savings plan to practice how much you WILL be spending on gas per week. Do this for anything you plan to finance, including your dream house. If planning to save up for a house, you can take your rent, and subtract that from your total monthly mortgage target and that value, put that into a separate savings to practice saving for said house. when you go into buy your house and car, don't let the dealer and broker sell you more than you can afford. Talk to a loan officer first and get a pre approval first for your loan that will get your monthly payment to where you want it, and how much house or car that can buy you, and negotiate prices of cars and homes based off that pre aproved value.

After all, what can they do to change their IQ? It doesn't seem that IQ can be increased through education, chess, exercise, or many forms of brain training. I think it would be very productive for Caleb to teach her the basics. Besides fluid intelligence, some other reasons for her hampered understanding could be mental health disorders such as ADHD or dependent personality disorder, a worldview shaped by her environment, such as her mother's influence, or a lack of foundational knowledge, such as struggling with basic arithmetic, which could make understanding financial concepts more difficult for her. Caleb one thing I've noticed in your videos is you often tell people they "can't have fun" or "can't afford to have fun". Caleb I just started watching you today and already I love your videos. I do have a suggestion. I've noticed some of your guest get confused if you explain what is happening to them. I recommend maybe breaking down the amounts (ex. if you drive for a year how much will that cost vs if you take a bus for a year how much will that cost) and show them the numbers and explain to them $1000 to take the bus for the year is much better than $7000 to take the car. Overall, I absolutely love what you do and completely agree with all of your points. Keep these up! I will be watching every single video.

She should have gone to community college got a certificate in dental assisting and then cash flowed through dental hygiene school. As far as I know there aren’t any dental assisting degrees and the average salary in the us for assisting is $45k I believe while the average dental hygienist is closer to 80k. Also at Austin cc she could have gotten the same certificate for$2099.

At the start, you could see her excitement, thinking she had a lot of good things to share with him. And then...gone. Really felt for her when she later acknowledges herself that things got worse, as though she only now recognizes it. If her mom isn't already collecting some sort of social support on her behalf (might need to fight her for it, if so), then she needs to be connected with some sort of support program or a case worker. She seems so sweet and just needs someone to stand up for her and point her in the right direction on occasion. Caleb, she needs a Big Brother.

She is sadly mistaken with the certification/being registered. A lot of those are a basic requirement and it doesn’t add a lot of negotiation power. She should not rely on that but rather what she makes now.
@mrs.quills70612 жыл бұрын
And usually to negotiate a raise they care more about your experience anyways. It’s good she has an internship, but I think she should get an actual degree at a higher dental position. I feel like she chose the certification because it takes less time. Many do that in the medical fields and I have some friends who did that with nursing, many are going back. It’s super hard to go to school and financially support yourself, but it’s worth it in the end I think.

Watching this hurt me. It's frustrating that she has to pay her mom $600 while going to school and working. When my dad told me I had to pay his bills and pay rent, I said no because I was doing so much and trying to save that I couldn't. After that it, it was a struggle for me on my finances. It's hard when you don't know how to save money and you have to figure it out yourself. I am thankful I found great financial advice, but damn this hurt me. I can relate to her.
@camiiii31 Жыл бұрын
i can relate too because my parents didnt give me a cent after i turned 18. but it's not like they could help it, they had no money to give me and I made my way on my own. I did move back in with my parents at one point and paid them for utilities and "rent", but it was still a steal compared to having my own apartment. her mom may very well be struggling too, there's nothing wrong with charging rent if that's the most the mom is able to help.
@sandrab1594 Жыл бұрын
@camiiii31 I can see the extent of charging your children rent, but it is a struggle. I feel like if they're in school, working, why charge rent? Help them save for their future. Granted, I won't pay for their personal things or bills that come across. Or maybe do charge them rent, but keep the rent money for their savings. I don't know. It's tough when we don't know how to handle our finances when we weren't taught in school how yo handle them correctly.

I think it’s clear from the toxic relationship with her mom really plays into her current mindset and actions around money. She definitely can’t afford what she’s doing right now and hopefully with her not having to pay for the certificate weekly soon and being able to then get a bit more an hour and get 40 hours a week with benefits she’ll be able to start some forward momentum. She definitely needs to budget and cut back a lot on all the fun but you can tell with her mindset she can’t cut fun out completely or she’ll feel deprived and then the pendulum will swing way back and she’ll probably dig a bigger hole somehow. I also don’t think selling the car is her best move if you look at her life as a whole. Financially it may be but the complexities of all that is too much and living somewhere where she is being threatened to be kicked out, having a car and not relying on the bus is definitely feels like a bit of a safety net. (Even if it isn’t). Definitely trying to refinance it because that interest rate is absolutely insane.

I totally believe parents should charge their adult children rent if they're living at home. But $600 for the living room? That's wayyy too much. A part of me is hoping the mom is secretly putting it in a savings account for the daughter, but I don't think that's the case :/
@Carlos-sh6iu2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree, $400 is a fair amount. She is an adult and should pay rent
@BlackPaladin22 жыл бұрын
It's not unheard of. Have had quite a few millennial friends paying 400-$800 rent living at parents just because apartments were $1200+/mo. Allows their parents to actually handle a large portion of the bills and they still can save. It's how some of my friends ended up getting their own apartment or a foreclosed house with a far better paying job in a few years of doing that. This is an inherently American thing though because our culture heavily looks down on living with parents. In many parts of asia for example it's quite common for people to live with their parents until around 30 rent free, then get together with a significant other while having a stable job and move out together.

It's fascinating how things just don't ... click. It really feels like there's something deeper going on than her just not having financial literacy. Possibly somewhere on the spectrum? Not trying to diagnose but just the lack of awareness of how emotional he's becoming over this, and her answers which aren't exactly typically appropriate for the question she's being asked, just kind of make me take pause.
