This is amazing. This guy's view on not forcing kids to take care of parents, messing up early, and working on fixing stuff later. This is such a common problem. I lived this in my early 20s and I’m still dealing with the consequences. I’m in my 40s. These guys come out from the military with ZERO financial knowledge. When you are in, ALL you bills are auto pay. Your rent is taken before you even see it in your account. And you are a giant target to EVERY credit card or financial institution out there. My now ex husband saw guys leave the service in debt up to their eyeballs because if you are in the military you will get approved period. They know you’re on autopay, and know you are probably making more $$ than ever in your life. There is NO education or push to save from anyone. These are 18-25 year old KIDS. There needs to be some sort of educational financial program for these soldiers when they join AND when they leave teaching proper saving and spending. I’ve seen SO many soldiers come out and just lose everything due to zero accountability and education and it’s heartbreaking.

I can’t speak for everyone’s military experience, but we have financial training once a year and someone that’s a financial advisor is the speaker. I’ve never spoken to one because I’m comfortable allocating my money to different accounts for future expenses but we all have access to this. Just needs to be pushed out better I guess

There’s literally free financial literacy courses for every service member or their families. Most branches also offer one-on-one financial guidance as well. If someone wants help, they can get help. But you can’t convince someone to help themselves.

Ive been doing Ramsey's baby steps for 5 years. Family of 6. And we do the $1k. I can honestly say there hasn't been an emergency that cost over 1K that we've come across yet. There have been some medical issues but we're able to pay those off with time. It definitely lights a fire under you and makes you angry about living in debt. We have paid off 80k in 5 years.. making about $70k a year. Very challenging but possible

I knew he was probably Army. They were writing kids massive checks in 2005-2015 to join. Then he said he had telecommunication experience and I knew he was probably a 25 series. I used to work with guys like that. Smart, hard-working…best people I’ve ever known. And they’d often blow their entire bonus on a terrible car loan. Luckily, the Army got a bit better trying to dissuade soldiers from doing that. But it still happens. I’m glad to see someone on the other end of that trying to do better. This guy’s going places - I have no doubt he’ll be in a better place soon.

This conversation was great! One thing I wish they discussed is insurance. Particularly long term disability insurance. With the nature of his job, all that time in the car, after talking about his accident, and having a non-working spouse, I would hope he would have a solid LTD and term life. Especially with that income and two kiddos. He even mentioned that he doesn’t want his kids to feel responsible for him. He has a good plan, but what happens if life hits between now and then? Glad to see someone who is a few years older and past the mistakes of their 20’s.

I'm also a veteran that works on building cell towers and I went through a bad financial phase after getting out. I make just over 110k a year and I'm watching this because I see the worth of my monthly income and I don't wanna ruin this moment. Climbing towers is a very lucrative career and what he said about being laid off on Friday and starting a new job on a Monday does not surprise me at all. I actually dropped out of college to use my GI Bill for this trade and it is honestly the best decision I've ever made.

50K per diem is taxable if expense reports are not submitted. This could ruin his financial future and life if he's not very sure it's tax exempt and gets audited. Imagine 3 years from now getting hit with $36000 in owed back taxes. That could derail the next 10 years+ of his life.

I didn’t hear anything about Life Insurance being discussed but I may have missed it. In my opinion, this is a necessity for someone with children and not to mention the high cost of a burial and burial plot. I had a coworker, who was a single mother of three, who didn’t have life insurance. We had a discussion about the topic and she decided to enroll in a plan through work. A few weeks later she was killed in an automobile accident. It happens too often.

Straight up refusing a woman because she has a kid is a great way to miss out on a good woman. Both my father and my best buddy have had success in marrying a divorced woman with kids. Just to add another comment, other's have said it but hopefully this Thomas fella sees these comments. The Per Diem sounds a bit sketchy. Mr Thomas, 50k in per diem sounds like your new employer is trying to save himself on Payroll taxes which is definitely sketchy. And Per Diem IS taxfre UP TO a certain ammount. You really should talk to a good tax accountant to look into your tax situation because it looks like you're trying to do everything right and it would be a shame that all this hard work could get ruined by an audit 3 years from now and owe thousands in taxes, penalties, and interest.

I would seriously suggest having a tax accountant look at that $50k per diem. If Your employer gives you a flat per diem amount and no expense report is required, then you don't qualify for tax exemption. It doesn't sound like bro submits an expense report for everything, so that 50K per diem may be taxable. Anyways, just a heads up bc if you get audited and get slapped with owed back taxes, it could be a HUGE amount (relative to his earnings)... $50k tax liability for a couple years could easily reach $30k+...

Someone said it. I was looking if someone else had said it and here you are. This. so much this. It sounds like he just got this new job which means he's still has time to do thing sproperly. Yes, per diem pay is tax free UP TO a certain ammount. EVERYONE who does not understand taxes and especially if you're trying to dig yourself out of debt should get themselves a GOOD tax accountant. If worse comes to worse and you need a hard reset on your finances, almost all other debt can be bankrupted. But not student loands or taxes. That debt is for life if you can't get a handle on it.

I also scrolled to try and find this comment. The federal per diem is $56 meals and $96 lodging in 2022. And like you said without expense reports, then anything above that is taxable. They’d also need to be able to prove their travel I believe to get the tax deduction. So at $50k, that’s within the rates if both applied and he travels for approx 323 days in the year. I’m not sure the specifics of his travel or if there’s different rules in place for this kind of trade job. But it sounds like the employer is just trying to remove their side of the payroll tax. However the employee might still be liable for the portion not tax exempt on their end of year taxes. An audit 7 years from now could be devastating if he doesn’t have a certified tax accountant look into this set up and penalties and taxes accrued for the whole 7 years.

I am a 100% disabled veteran. I completed Naval Pilot Training - (Navy spends about ‘$1M producing ONE pilot ). That FREE training allowed me to become a major Airline Captain spending 15 years flying to Hawaii Congress passed a bill allowing me to discharge $500K of my children’s student debt. I have NO debt , passive lifetime spendable income of over $8,000.00 per month - and a paid off condo near Laguna Beach Calif . All my healthcare is 100% free via government. I just have to say, I always hear people talking about how expensive daycare for children is. I think it’s important to reflect on what those people are getting paid for. Would you want that job? Daycare providers and teachers deserve to be paid a living wage and more than enough to retire at an acceptable age because those jobs are exhausting. Taking care of other people’s children all day long everyday is not given enough praise.

I can't afford daycare or it wouldn't financially make sense for me to so I work from home, at least until my son starts school. Not that I think childcare workers shouldn't get paid well, but it is an expensive deal for some people.

So here i was, thinking i was in a bad spot because of a car loan with about 6k left. Which is the only debt i have. No cards(thank GOD) no weird agreements with people. My mom got into a situation with one and they were not helping to pay minimums on debt as they should have and now has delinquent debt onto her criminal records and sadly it’s public record in Indiana. So on top of debt she also had to pay Court fees 🥴🙃

I agree that $1,000 doesn’t cover much, but it does excite you that can save and if you’re handling business then that $1,000 can help you cover small expenses like a new tire or something of that nature and it’s easier to replenish while your paying off debts. That little saving’s definitely helped boost my motivation to get out of debt because I started paying off debt aggressively

I've been doing Ramsey's plan for 5 years. Paid off 80k. And did the $1k emergency fund. So far nothing has been over $1k in 5 years.. with the exception of medical issues. Which I pay on monthly. It definitely makes you race to get out of debt

@@Lady.Luck. agree! I didn’t know who Dave Ramsey was before I started paying off debt. I started paying off my cards that were $300 or less first and didn’t have any savings, but I started looking up debt payoff videos on KZbin and people were talking about Dave so I looked him up and then when he said first have $1,000 savings in case something comes up. I did that when I paid off my 2 cards that had $250 balance and then I took off from there. I’m still paying off my car and I just got an unexpected surgery that my insurance didn’t cover, but I’m still living below my means so that helps a lot.
