Even if an old cartridge based game IS actually broken, they can almost always be fixed because old cartridge based games are literally just PCBs. So you can repair them like you can repair any other type of PCB. DS, 3DS, Vita, and Switch cartridges are a different story though

For proper cleaning it is necessary to disassemble the cartridge. I clean first with a soft eraser, the pink ones are a bit better, the blue ones are too hard and scratch the protective surface of the pins. Then thoroughly clean the residue with a solution for cleaning electrical contacts, it is much better than isopropyl alcohol. In this way, the electronic board can be inspected for possible corrosion problems or weak soldering.

@retrorick here’s a little trick I learned myself with cartridge based games that don’t work after the pins have been cleaned. Take the cartridge apart and take the board out and place it on a flat surface like a table, take some fine sand paper or scotch brite and sand both sides of the brass pins to expose fresh metal then reclean the pins with alcohol or whatever you use. I bought about 40 Nes games last August from someone, took each one apart, cleaned the pins with alcohol, reassembled each one and not one worked. I then took them all back apart and sanded the pins like I told you and recleaned them with alcohol and every single one worked! It’s my go to method now if I can’t get a cartridge game working.
@Scott_Snyder
@Scott_Snyder 3 жыл бұрын
Abrasives like sandpaper and scotch bright shouldn’t be used because they cause permanent damage to the pins. It might not seem that way at first but they remove layers of the metal and will allow corrosion to set in. Check this article out www.retrorgb.com/cleangames.html

The old marker is easy to remove with Expo dry erase markers as well. Just scribble over the marking and wipe it back off while still wet. The chemicals they use to make it "dry erase" will also bring out the permanent markings.

I would totally have did that deal. Definitely a no brainer. I use some different methods for cleaning cartridges when I pick them up. I usually wipe them down with a Clorox wipe on the exterior. If needed I use a pick to get any grime out of the crevices. If there is any marker on them I use goof off to get it off(just be careful with the goof off on the label.) Dry erase marker also works some time. If it has stickers or tape I always try to get it off unless it’s on the labels of the game. If you try that it will most likely ruin the labels so better not to mess with it. Occasionally use armor all to bring back a nice shine to the case. I always open them up to see what they look like inside. If the pins are not too bad I put them back together and use a 1up card. If they are super dirty I use Brite Boy and a non abrasive cloth to wipe them off and then use 90% Isopropyl Alcohol afterward to shine the pins up. A lot of work but just pop on some Retro Rick to listen to while doing it.

Rick, The thumbs down was for the brite boy. It was painful to watch, but I wouldn’t leave a thumbs down with out telling you why. You didn’t even open it up to look at it first, or just try cleaning it with alcohol. All of that Briteboy is going to go directly into the testing console. That’s where it will cause possible short circuits. That’s aside from the damage it does to the contacts that doesn’t need to occur. If I bought a game on eBay that had it all gunked up in there when it arrived, I would ask for a full refund. My first step, open it. Look at it. I only use 90+% isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. If it needs anything more, I use a white eraser. Then repeat the alcohol qtip process. My pro tip to share is for the magic marker. Use a dry erase marker on it, then it will wipe almost right off with isopropyl alcohol and a qtip ot paper towel. You will be amazed how well it works. The dry erase chemicals work into the old marker making it no longer permanent. I hope you can show a good proper cleaning for the viewers in the future. Enjoy the show, but never see anything like the deals you see by me on the east coast.

I'd never use metal polish. I use a white pencil eraser (PVC free) to remove oxidation or grime. If that doesn't work, then I use isopropyl alcohol and q-tips. If that doesn't work (It always has) I would consider metal polish or fine grit sandpaper. But all but one or two games I have got to work with just eraser (the others needed isopropyl). I think if you open the cart up and go over each side of the connector with an eraser for 5-10 minutes per side, it should work. Also please don't blow into the carts.. that's why they are dirty in the first place lol.
@ghkillah1995
@ghkillah1995 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ninja_Gaijin OK, erasers are not ever going to be good for the contacts. You're accelerating friction and heat on to the contacts as it you were to be virtually putting the cartridge (unevenly at that) into the system thousands of times. What happens to the contact points when IPA isn't enough, and when you can't see it but you're actively smearing, smudging and grinding the contacts with of some microscopic, acidic, chunky soda/lunch spit from a kids breath from blowing on the cartridge at least 20 years ago over and over with an eraser? I've seen some games that are very bad, sometimes they might not even be worth saving. This is not a common use to use metal polish, it's for metal, not the PCB or near any mirroring or solder joints AT ALL. Please know this. I've restored games and consoles for over 20 years, and I can tell you the unfortunate news that within time, electronics eventually die out. Capacitors swell, resistors fail, batteries weaken and blow. You can preserve them and extend their life, but it's all in how they are treated from start to finish, even then you still have corruption, oxidation, patina, and negative failure of being a lemon.

You can clean those a lot better with a fiberglass pen but you need to open them to reach the pins with it.

91% alcohol all day. If you need to take it apart use an eraser and if those don't work might be an issue with the PCB which I would then troubleshoot before ever using Brasso which is highly abrasive especially if you're not careful.

take the cartridge apart, grab a dremel with the polishing pad attachment and add that brite boy to it, and try to polish all of the connectors to a mirror shine. maybe try on a second nintendo to confirm if its dead.

I seriously hope you are joking! Those are all ways to cause permanent damaged to your games. 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol and a q-tip are safe and all you should need to clean a cartridge. Please check out the article which better explains this. www.retrorgb.com/cleangames.html

@@Scott_Snyder if you arent an idiot you can do it on a low setting. you aint using a grinding wheel and the cart is already "dead."

@@abursaw I mean no disrespect to you or anyone else. There is a lot of bad information out there about how to clean games and systems. I put a link to an article from a respected site on what is good and bad to use on games. The retro game community is an awesome group of people who all love old games. If I can help people see there is a safer way to preserve these old games I’ll be happy I did a small part to give back.

Brasso shouldn’t be used it’s destructive and will cause worse issues down the road.

Arch Rivals is just a bad cart all the way around. I don't think I have ever found one that does work. I currently own 2 non working carts.

I've had games that don't work in my retron 3, but they work in my nes. Just because it won't play in a clone console doesn't mean its broken.

I've heard that blowing on cartridges isn't a good idea as it causes bits of saliva to get in making them rust over time.

Whenever I buy cartridge games I always open them up and clean the circuit board before they're even tested in one of my systems. First I use Brite Boy, then I use high % isopropyl alcohol to remove any polish residue. For quick cleaning, like an existing game doesn't want to work, I use the 1 Up Cards. I also use the 1 Up Card brand console cleaners in my systems to clean their pins from time to time.

Ebay does not use PayPal anymore, all of your eBay fees are automatically taken out of every sale with the managed payments, just a heads up so you can give a more accurate number. Also always start with rubbing alcohol, because that Brite boy and brasso stuff can destroy a cart. And I hope you clean the pins off with alcohol before you try it, it's not good to leave that stuff on the pins
