We found this channel because we needed a refresher since we are about to pick up our new Staffy puppy. This channel is AWESOME! While our original intent was to refresh ourselves on training a new puppy we actually were able to change things with our current 4 year old Staffy TODAY after watching this video. We've been doing it wrong all along. After applying the technique here we were able to immediately put an end to the shark mouth and get her to take the treats nicely. Gonna have to watch them all now! Thanks so much!!!

Yay! Good to see you again. Thank you for this!! My pup (almost 14 months now!) has. . .a shark mouth, as you aptly describe it. lol Her targetting is TERRIBLE. I have been working with her a little, by not letting her have the treat until she tries more gently, and she is getting better, but this looks like a more 'fun' method for her. As you say, it's not really something you can scold them for. (Though when she makes me yelp, I will tell her to be more gentle. I don't think she really gets what 'gentle' means yet. :P) Definitely something I'm going to employ. She can use the target practice.

great video as always :D my dog is usually pretty gentle with food, but highly food motivated (which is a great thing), so when we do lure training he gets so overly excited he loses his gentleness, and at such moments i dont want him to leave it alone cause i want him to follow it :'D luckily its mostly not to bad, if it gets to bad i just let him do something he's already confident with and that usually solves the problem (:

Could you possibly make a video on bite inhibition and how to stop a puppy putting their mouth on human skin. Would love to learn a great effective way to prevent my puppy from biting my feet as a walk and to prevent her from chewing on my arm and hands when I don't want her to. I wished I'd known this when my sheltie was still alive. We called it the shark attack because she would get so excited she'd actually come straight up like a shark coming out of the water and snatch the treat! It got to the point, I just let her learn to catch the treat so I could reward her without getting my fingers hurt. I lucked out with my boxer mixes, because they loved learning, but would just open their mouths to let me "dispense" the treat. 😂 Will definitely be using this tip for all future doggos!

Are you using the “yes” marker as the release cue as well? I’ve been struggling with deciding this, as it’s commonly used that way by trainers on the internet, while others use yes as the marker but also “free” or “release” in commands such as place or sit (with built in stay). Thanks so much for any input!

That's a great question! In many cases, yes, I do use the "Yes" marker as the release. However, I do have a couple of neutral release words I use in a few instances. For example, in my car, everyone has to hang out when the door opens; nobody is allowed to just bail out. In that setting, I'll use, "OK" to mean they can exit the vehicle. Sometimes, I'll use it at thresholds too like my back gate or at my in-laws' house. Otherwise, "Yes" is mostly my terminal marker AND a release to move. LOL not sure if that clears things up!

Thank you I appreciate your quick reply. I just found your channel after a few months of reading/watching other things. I started with the yes as my marker only, but then needing "free" and it seems tedious to say both. Plus, I get more play/drive with just saying "YES" and moving right on. I have a boxer male who is super high drive so I try to play into that. I do use "OK" also for other things, such as when he is allowed to cross a threshold going outside after door is open, or to get a treat I previously said leave it for. Truly, love your channel. I have a dog who delicately takes an biscuit from you and he’s really good but then as soon as it’s a meat based item I lose my fingers, hand and arm. I think he’s worried about missing out from competition with our other dogs and the meat being a high value item to them compared to boring ole biscuits.

Hello I have a large breed female rescue dog that seems to be between 1-2 years old , have had her for about 2-3 months. Shes very obedient to the point where i can trust her to run off leash and always come when called as she also already responds very well to her new name. However when left alone she will desteoy the house weve lost hundreds already and cant get her hooked on toys to curb a possible anxiety or boredom. She runs outside for 5-30 minutes every day, knows basics such as sit, down, paw, come, leave it, out (please leave this room right now) and several more. So far has adjusted very well to feeding shcedules, walking shcedules, play time schedules and our other dog. I just wish we could trust leaving her to free roam the house without getting back to everything being destroyed. She shows fear and disinterest when trying to get her to play with toys and seems to have been abused in her previous home because she strongly fears strangers and anything that resembles a frisbee, mop/broom etc. Need to get her hooked on chew toys but as mentioned she will fear any type of toy strongly or at best show absolute disinterest. Any help strongly appreciated!! (Shes a German Shepherd by the way)

windwolfgirl can you crate train your new dog? She is not ready to be left on her own as she has proven. Usually if you can keep her in a crate until she is at least 2 1/3 to 3 years old and past the heavy chewing stage, she can then be trusted out of the crate on her own. Plus the crate gives her a place where she will feel safe. You might have to do it very slowly if she has never been crated before. And lots of exercise a couple of times a day will help too. Good luck!

This isn’t exactly related to the video, but my family and I noticed that our puppy is starting to be aggressive when another dog walks by her or sometimes when we do while she is eating a treat. She is also starting to do this with the dog food as well. She hasn’t snapped or tried to bite, only growling but we don’t want this action to grow into something worse. Do you have any tips that would correct this?

Chances are this isn't aggression so much as reactivity. Those have different overall goals (i.e. aggression tries to increase social distance and reactivity tries to decrease social distance) and then the frustration of restraint often complicates things and then the two things look very much the same outwardly. Reactivity is much easier to solve, usually. This is most likely also different from the growling with the food which is probably some minor resource guarding. That being said, there aren't really any good "tips" for these. They're a lot more complicated than that. It's not like getting tips for cleaning windows or lowering your energy bill. Also, I'm just going by my experience from having encountered lots of these things before...I haven't met your dog or seen her do these things so I can directly observe her behavior so you gotta take what I say with a grain of salt. There are some good articles out there on DogStarDaily.com which is a great resource. I'd say if you feel out of your depth, get a local pro involved. My dog is so crazy about food that my family thinks that I'm starving him (9 mo labrador), but I actually give him more then I should and he's in perfect shape. Anyway.. I've been doing it for quite a long time now and I see no progres :C I'm not giving up, but it sure doesn't help with my motivation :V

I don't know what you use for editing but final cut has great white noise cancelation and auphonic.com is a real great service to boost your audio quality. (I don't work there I use it myself). 2 hours a month of audio processing are free.

Thanks! That particular setup I used I had the gain way too high. Definitely never using that setup again. I'm using Final Cut, but some of the noise cancelling made me sound like I was on the telephone. I'll check out auphonic. Thanks for the heads up!
