I think the moment at 6:22 shows beautifully that you haven’t broken this dog by correcting her, or scared her in any way. She was corrected, listened and then immediately expected a belly rub. That’s a comfortable dog who’s understood that the correction was about the behaviour, not you asserting some stupid sort of dominance and you being generally aggressive and untrustworthy. Love it!

actually that can be a cowering position for dogs, not asking for belly rubs. in fact you can see that dog is stressed by the way its panting with its mouth stretched at the sides. in a few shots you can also see the tongue flick - another sign of a stressed dog.

I just tried this technique with our 9 week old puppy when she was in crazy-bitey mode and it worked instantly to change her behavior. It required very little force. Merely this new sound paired with this unexpected correction worked wonders. After trying solely positive and passive ways of addressing this, I’m amazed by how well this worked. Thank you, Will!

I tried to follow this advice a little while ago but my 5 year old daughter got upset thinking I was being cruel to her puppy, so at best it was a half hearted attempt. Today, I had a rare hour to myself. At first my attempts to stop the puppy (pug by the way, about 4 months old) were pretty fruitless. I think my advice is, if they still see biting/attacking you as a game, then you need to be more harsh. I was in a room with a lot of space, and it got to the point where I was pretty forcefully pushing him away, quite some distance. I never struck him, more of a very firm push, and he was never going to hit into anything, but I was getting stonger in my resistance to him biting. Less than 20 minutes later he was much more calm, not nipping me or bitting me, lots more licks and still a bit of teeth on skin but nowhere near what it was. We went out to a kids party and after coming home he was much better. A tiny relapse but with another firm push away he is as good as gold. I'm expecting to have to reinforce this in the coming days, but following the advice above the change is pretty remarkable. Don't be afraid to be strong if you need to would be my advice, so long as you won't physically hurt the dog. This bloke knows what he is on about. He's the dogs bollocks.

I quickly realized that while it may feel a bit uncomfortable giving an intense hard correction, once I exceeded my pups intensity she caught on very quickly. I was below her threshold of intensity before, and she wasn’t understanding that enough is enough. I will be incorporating this into training/play time every day! Thanks for the awesome content!

One of the better videos i've seen on this, well explained on how to apply the slip lead and proper use and also explaining the desired results and what could have until you get it right. Also, good to see explanations on the dogs behaviour as it was happening. Sometimes most people don't talk about that and "home trainers" are left wondering if the desired behaviour is what should be happening or not. i've been doing this with my pup, and he has been reacting the same way, barking from a distance and figuring out what's going on. Good to know it is a normal reaction and nothing to worry about too much at this stage.

You're videos are the best. You cut to the chase, show examples and explain how and why it works. This just changed everything, my hands were getting so cut up from my 9 week old puppy biting I found myself getting angry with him. So I searched your videos once again and found you had one on puppy biting. Even tho he wiggles around a lot and tries to bite me still, he can't get me with this hold of his collar. I wait for the relaxing second and reward him. He's starting to understand and doing better everyday with this technique. I've also been teaching him "leave it" with food placed in front of him and making him wait, "leave it" until I say it's ok... I'm hoping it'll transfer over to anything I don't want him to bite, eat, or get into. Like my hands and clothes!! You're videos are my first go to everyday... Thank you!!

I've been training dogs since the early 70s and this is exactly how I train and people are always amazed at how quickly I can change a dogs behavior AND how quickly the dogs bond with me and want to be with me. Also, listen to what he said about the 'No' command. Again, I've been saying this exact thing as long as I've been training. It simply means, 'Stop doing what you are doing, do something else'. Once the dog understands that concept, the relationship with your dog will change for the rest of your life. No is the absolute PERFECT command. I do not use 'leave it, stop, don't touch, blah blah blah'. I always use 'no', because it means, 'stop doing what you doing, do something else'. A big thumbs up and a new subscriber. Thank you.

Great video! Thank you!! I have a GSD puppy who is 15 weeks today ( we know - we went to the vet for final shots!). He continues to "go over the top" and bites quite hard - my hands are dripping with blood - I tried the "holding his collar tightly and keeping his mouth away from me" method just about 30 minutes ago. He's clearly over-tired so he came in and had a quick puppy nap. He's settled down right now but first of all, you and your methods are SOOOO appreciated and thank you. I would've liked to see your hand shape and location of touch in slow motion so I could try it. I do think, however, I'm on the right track. I praise profusely ( which is why I feel so HURT emotionally when he bites me) ( See? personal!!??!!?) but I'm glad to hear that what I'm trying is ok to try and I wish he becomes a soft biter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You've posted your video at such a perfect time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Will. Thanks for the great info. One question. In this video you see the dog avoiding and barking. You mention you would address this. My puppy does the same and will even try to get a bit aggressive and it drives us nuts. How do you address this behavior after an active correction? Thank you and thanks for all your efforts.

Thank you! I was having issues with her listening to my corrections, but that is because her biting and dominance and aggression are actually at a high level and I am not correcting at her level or higher... I did notice yesterday she listened to the corrections more bc I was doing it more affectively like this. Thank you for these videos... My puppy pit rot mix is going to be such a great dog after we work through a few of these issues. She's a good girl now of course, but a crazy wanting to own the house little pup... And she hates being told what to do... But now I know I'm doing the corrections better and she's listening. I'm so proud of what we have already accomplished and I can't wait to accomplish more with her! My sweet little crazy lady Ophelia! ahaha! All because of great videos like yours!

She is ripping my forearm with her baby sharp tooth instead of toys and biting my legs when walking. Always appreciate your videos Will…. Many thanks. Over the past months since discovering your site, I’ve learned much…. and continue to do so. Recently retired from the cockpit in Abu Dhabi, I now find myself raising a now 22 month old female Golden Retriever (Sandy) here on the island of Phuket in SW Thailand. There is only Sandy and myself living in the house. Over the past 20 months, Sandy has leaned to be very calm and relaxed when at home. BUT…. whenever someone else comes over to the house, she turns into a little Devil-Dog. She becomes so incredibly excited and happy to see someone else that she always wants to jump up on them and mouth them. It’s almost like she’s bored out of her mind having to look at just me all day….. and wants my guest to rescue her…..Hahaha. When Sandy does jump up on a guest, I try to pull her away and just let her sniff the visitor…. as we go through the introductions. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always work and Sandy will continue to jump up and mouth my guest….. which is when I again have to pull her away. On most occasions I will have to attach her lead to a secure hard-point, away from my guests. That’s when the non-stop Barking begins….. Whenever I have to leave the house, I always make a point of trying to take Sandy with me, so that she can interact and socialize with other people. Both Sandy and I are learning together how to get through this….. but Damn, she’s a lotta work sometimes….. Hahaha.

Tell your friends that come to your house to TOTALLY IGNORE HER...never EVER give affection to an excited ..stressed scared or nervous dog... that means not saying hi...not touching her etc.... Id suggest having a long house lead on her so you can give a correction....teach her to go to her "place" command..have a blanket or elevated cot for her to go to....Have a friend come knock on your door so you can train her . ...Or ...you could also have a bag of treats at your door ... your friends can do the "scatter " method...where they toss a few treats onto the floor AWAY from them and the entrance....and they calmly walk in and sit down... they still need to totally IGNORE her until she totally calms down including giving no eye contact.....I live alone out on a farm and my dogs don't see many people either.........Excitement !! Exercise before company comes helps with the training too...Could be worse !!.. Happy.is better then being overprotective and aggressive but it does need to be addressed!!!....I'm sure Will will advise..

I adopted a 8 or 9 month old rescue lab x malinois 3 weeks ago. He's a great boy and keen learner but when I tried this to correct his rough mouthiness it seemed to triggerhim and he became hyper excited and got even mouthier and did zoomies mouthing me not very gently. I stayed calm, stood up crossed arms spoke calmly. I tired it twice and am not prepared to do correction any harder. My arms are covered with tooth bruises/marks. He's well exercised and lots of play time. I do suspect he was maybe overtired so I'm working on more sleep breaks for him in crate. Any suggestions please? 🙏🙏

Try make it so your in a very small space, inside is great, with no objects around (just like video). Use a lead to it's fullest, hold onto the lead, try think of it in the way where your not waiting and looking for the dog to stay calm for a short second but your actually 'forcing' the dog (with least amount of pressure, as video explains) to get in that position. The passive way he used by holding the collar is sort of what I mean. You will notice the trainer pretty much put the dog in that sit position to wait nicely. One way to look at it is 'do not give the dog any other options'

💕 I have a 4 month old German Shepherd mix. My 8 year old child and I have only been able to pet her when she’s passed out because if we start to pet her she starts to chew on us. I have tried what I could to stop this biting. Nothing worked so here I am KZbin searching. I just did the Touch/Verbal correction ONCE. She laid on my lap and we pet her peacefully for the first time since we adopted her. My kid and I looked at each other in disbelief as we loved on her…and she let us.

Mine too...I' m afraid to walk in my own yard ' cause of a damn 2 months dog.6 kilos). I got bitten till my blood came out...had to desinfect and put antibiotic. I have never been bitten by a dog. I think you shouldn't get to be bitten by your own dog. It's either me or him. I have to tie him get him back to its mother. For sure, I can't stand so much pain and being hurt by a dog. It' s summer and I don't wear trousers and shoes anymore and I got hurt on my legs. I hate her. Don't want her anymore. Too much pain. 😢
@Lixxy-_-14 ай бұрын
@@semper9565 you shouldn’t hate your puppy. Your pup is very young and it doesn’t understand. If the biting is that bad, you should either try to train it yourself, or get it trained by someone else. I’ve been bitten by my puppy lots of times and blood came out 80% of the time. A puppy’s intention is not to hurt you, sometimes it’s because the puppy’s happy to see you, it’s also because it’s teething, and if the puppy wants to play. Also, you shouldn’t keep your PUPPY outside, or else it’s not going to learn. You should either let it in your house and close the doors of rooms you don’t want it in, or put it in a cage. Puppy’s NEED to be disciplined, or else it’s going to get worse. A tip is to tap your puppy every time it bites you. Not hard, but hard enough for it to understand that it’s not good to bite. And just keep doing it until your dog stops. I know it’s hard, but whoever you are, you got this. But please don’t hate a 2 month old puppy, because my 6 month old puppy bites me, but I still love her :)
@semper95654 ай бұрын
@@Lixxy-_-1 Thanks, already did everything you said and nothing works. My dad taught me to use a thin stick and threaten on it. It works as long as I have it in my hand and then nothing. Her teething hasn't finished yet. Maybe in 2-3 moths she will finish biting. Although...I'm kind of affraid, 'cause I left my home and when I'll come back (in september) maybe she won't recognise me anymore and will bite me even worse.

It doesn't work with my 14 months labrador retriever. Instead he attacked me aggressively. After "psh"ing him and doing the movement at this sides, he kept coming back to bite me and play with my trousers' laces. I kept "psh"ing him, and he kept coming. So I corrected him with bigger force, but he kept coming, and every time he came, he came more aggressive and then attacked me twice on both hands (drew blood). I've been bitten before by a dog and had to get stitches, so I know that he really attacked me. It seems that this correction makes him aggressive. What did I do wrong? How can I correct this? Holding the collar doesn't work either with him. We have been doing the collar method as well as the flip on belly move for the past 6 weeks, but his behaviour didn't change at all.
@itsonlysound2 жыл бұрын
One of my dogs was like that and what worked was putting him in the naughty corner like a toddler😂. If he mouthed at me, i'd verbally correct him once. If he didn't stop, i'd correct him again but take/direct him to his bed and get him to lie down and wait for about 30 seconds. When he does that, release him and praise him. Repeat. He soon got the message that mouthing at me meant forfeiting some time with me.
@remyrichardson92632 жыл бұрын
At 14 months old its not puppy biting, its a learned behaviour that probably needs looking at more deeply. Puppy biting needs to be nipped in the bud by 6 months old coz at 6 months adult teeth and adult jaw pressure is in place. As the biting wasnt addressed effectively at puppy stage it is now a learned behaviour at the teenage stage and needs addressing differently than how it is being addressed in the video with a dog that is at puppy stage. Maybe look at Wills other videos that address aggression.

I’ve tried this technique a couple of times on my 15 week working cocker spaniel but it seems to aggravate her more and make her aggressive, to the point that I worried that I was going to need to apply too much force with the active command. I’m worried that it isn’t puppy biting she’s displaying. Sometimes she’ll be playing and then all of a sudden turns (she’s not resourcing guarding and I’m not trying go take anything off her). If I use this command she gets worse to the point she’s launching at my arm or leg and I put her in her crate to calm down and nap. Am I doing something wrong? I really want to get it right before it becomes a learned behaviour for her when she’s older

This morning, he bit me and started to tug on my sleeve. When i got him into the house, I was deeply worried about getting him to not do that. I watched this and put it to the test, not only did he stop, he rolled over and showed me his stomach. I used the "EH!" sound and when he sat i told him good boy and rubbed his head. He tried a couple more times and i did the same thing and I got him under control quick! Even felt good to walk him further in my nieghborhood and he was much more Obediant and managable. I like the techniques in this video. I'm already using a passive correction and my dog gets frustrated and continues to bite and scratch, it seems to get her even more riled up. She's also an anxious rescue puppy which doesn’t help with training. I'll try the more assertive corrections and see if they help, but thank you for not using a prong collar, they are not recommended where I live, some states have banned them. Good to know there are alternatives.

I just bought a yorkiepoo, 6 pounds, because he was terrorizing his family and they were afraid he would hurt the kids. At a year old they couldn't get near him if he had anything in his mouth. He also gets crazy mean at corrections and draws blood. Within 3 weeks i can now take things away from him using the hold collar technique (because it was the only safe way) and I'm glad to see that it is an actual technique. I also substitute a high priority toy for whatever he has, that has helped. He's much better all around but still gets crazy at times and it's hard to get near him to grab the collar without getting bit. He's not "love biting". So I'll just keep at it, the change isn't instant because he has a year of bad behavior to correct. But there has been a dramatic change. I'll keep watching, your vids are useful.
