I know doing shorts it's also time consuming, but for uneventful devices like going from the 35xx plus to the 35xxH which in theory should just be a form factor revision, a Short stating some of the problems or good features could be enough to understand the main points. Provided that a review for the similar device was indeed done. I admit is cool to have a review on every single device that comes out as some other KZbinrs do, since even if it's mostly the same as a previous review, when you are buying something you typically want to have as much content on it as possible. But this isn't your full time job, even if it is, you might not want to invest that much time in something that feels repetitive. I'm here for this new approach, I will definitely be checking this information on every device I'm interested in

Thoughts on doing a pocket test? Like basically answering the questions: - Does this fit in an empty pocket? - How about with a wallet or keys? - Would it fit into a cargo pants pocket? - Inside a jacket? - How about a bag or purse? - Would it require it's own case? (like a steam deck for example) - Which situation does this device feel the most comfortable in ? - Does it feel burdensome to carry around? Basically its one of the things which is very hard to fully ascertain just by numbers alone, since theres minutia everywhere here (thumbsticks catching on to pants pocket, awkward bulges, awkward weight relative its size, pointy edges, etc).

I don't believe your checklist will hurt your quality; I do believe it will streamline the process for you and the viewer. It's possible that devices may not always fit the checklist format; for this reason, it may be a good idea to add a misc or side note section. Your approach is very pragmatic, and I respect and appreciate that. You have a clear and structured method for reviewing products, grounded in your personal experience with them. As viewers, it's important for us to understand that a review represents a snapshot based on a specific period of product use. You consistently remain true to yourself and to us in your videos, which is commendable. Personally, I don't expect you to review every product, even though I would love it if you could. For example, I got the Anbernic 405v and added it to my collection even though you haven't mentioned it. Some of us are here for confirmation, but we understand and accept what you personally choose to talk about and prefer. Additionally, I don't understand why this video is not monetised; I believe all your content deserves to be. The main reason I follow you is for your opinion and insight. The time and effort you invest in creating these reviews should be recognised and rewarded. I'm also eagerly looking forward to your update on the framework you mentioned for rating handheld devices. I hope that’s still in the works. Keep it up, Taki!

I think this is a very fair approach that both satisfies your initial goal of sharing information, while being a little more considerate of your time. In the example you put a pass/fail image (and description) perhaps it's all explained in the short hand but even if it's not it gives enough of a start for someone to look into it further should they want more information.

You could make a written article for each one of them, and for devices that don't pass the video test get a written article with the flaws, as they can be updated on the fly. You can also have a pinned comment on the videos that have any updates and extra information in the description. Just make sure to note that the description has any updates that may arise with the product you're reviewing. You can also just give short explinations in the comments and to get the full experience, you funnel them to the full article with any additions and such.

Taki thanks for giving your totally unbiased approach to handhelds. I have to say I would love to see some more long term follow-ups on these devices. My 1st was a GPD Win Mini. I don't know its because its my only handheld that I use a lot but I have some issues with it. One is AMD drivers, since Oct 2023 which was the best, I haven't seen an error free windows boot. I get TDR timeout errors. The other is the analog sticks. If you open the back panel and remove the 2 screws which hold each stick in, the brass nut that is only pressed fit into the plastic frame has backed its way out! I glued it back in and then weeks later the brass post on the opposite side wiggled its way out! This happens if you play AAA games or any game that requires you to press L3 / R3 repeatedly. If you are only doing retro games this will widely go unoticed. You might even have it but wont see untill you take out the 2 screws. Even without this issue overall I really wish I could buy better quality sticks if there was a third-party option out that. There is lots of room in this shell to DIY. I really love the clamshell form factor. I've used my Mini to death and even my original thumbs have caps peeled off. I used psvita cap replacements in the meantime. I hear switch replacement caps will also fit but I like how the vita ones have 6 different shapes. Any way I digress.

I love the standard testing process. Can you test headphone jack quality? Some of these devices have really bad 3.5mm noise and popping issues.

Appreciate you for not keeping us in the dark. We need more honest reviewers like you and RGC.

I would love to see the button+dpad resistance measured too, because for me, anything which requires more than 100g of force to press is a fail due to making my thumbs hurt. This can be measured by putting the device on a kitchen scale, hitting the tare button, then _very_ slowly pressing the game buttons and noting the highest values.

I like this, but I think a light amount of subjectiveness might be easier. These are tactile devices, and there's no use in omitting or twisting in knots to handle an observation like "this handheld is miserable to hold."

The stuttering issue on the xxH drove me crazy too, but I fixed it by changing the video driver to something else. I then changed it back to the original driver, and the stutter was still gone. I did not have to update firmware. I was glad i fixed it

Love the objective metrics and they will really make your channel stand out.

I like the change. I think one thing that would help would be a sliding scale/history of fail. For example anbernic and retroid very good at resolving issues with software when notified about the issues. Miyoo not so much, including that info during the review can also give incentive to the companies to fix the errors when they’re brought to attention. You’re the reason I bought an RP3+ and loved it (until water got spilled on it and it completely died) :( you do a great job already pointing out the pros and cons of each system already. I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Nice video. Its a shame these companies seemingly don't do QA, especially considering that they're selling so many units. But good on you for striving to put out the best reviews.

It is always hard to balance time with family, hobbies, and work. Good luck Taki! You showed in your graphics a few handhelds with Type C charging fails but could you say what that means?

I think he means that a few of the cheaper devices aren't compatible with the usb c to usb c cables that are being used more and more by phones (and that you may have predominantly in your house now). This is a bit frustrating as, for example, I have to dig out my old usb a to usb c cable to charge my miyoo mini (and only to charge my miyoo mini), rather than use my Steam Deck charger that I use for everything else I own. Do you think that's what he means?

In my experience disabling the video filter on the default SNES core on the Miyoo A30 DOES NOT correct the issues in performance. Even increasing the CPU frequency to the maximum available in the stock OS was not enough. A community reconfig called RA30 somewhat fixes that issue, but removes save states currently. Certainly would not recommend the A30 at this time without major software improvements.
