I only found this video AFTER I bought the system, but boy is this video good! I already did a lot of research before buying (it's my first retro gaming handheld, and it's actually not even for me but for a friend's child), but I learned even more here than I knew already. And it now even helped me for stuff that I was wondering now that I have the handheld in my own hands, for example if it is worth to install OnionOS 2.0. And I was shocked to see that N64 games instantly work as soon as I copy some roms onto the SD cards, because the console didn't show up in the RetroArch emulation menu before. So I guess what I'm saying is: Thank you for this great video, this was very well done. And if this is the quality you are always offering on your channel, I might very well consider subscribing now. /Edit: I just found out that I actually watched another of your videos before buying the system - the comparison video for RG35XX Plus / R36S / Miyoo Mini Plus / RG35XX. And I also commented on that video - however, that was a bit less enthusiastic. Basically, I said that the information presented in the video was very good, but the way you presented it was VERY confusing (no labels for the systems, order of how they were shows changed constantly, and you even changed the RGXX35+ model throughout the video (white model / black model) which confused the hell out of me.

I don't worry about any software limitations since I intend to swap it out with GarlicOS 2.0 when that releases fully. Any problems the stock OS has are just temporary until that period of time, really. I mean there's no guarantee that all of these issues *are* software limitations, as you mentioned, and certainly no guarantee GarlicOS will cover all the necessary features properly, at least not in earlier iterations which will probably require some fine-tuning after launch, but as far as I can see, it's just a matter of time and I am a very patient man.
@Lucifronz Жыл бұрын
Decided to try out the Alpha of GarlicOS 2.0. Not sure where to put Dreamcast, N64 or PSP games to test those out, because it didn't create folders for those systems, so I'll just assume it's not supported yet. Not a priority, anyway, I just wanted to see what games could be made playable out of the selection I have. The better an idea I have of their playability on the system, the sooner I can decide if those versions are worth keeping and clear some extra space on my microSD card. But it doesn't really matter, I can wait for the full release. Hopefully it's ready soon. Looks like it probably won't release by the end of this year, if that recent post from BlackSeraph is any indication, but that's okay. Shit happens. I'm excited, though. I also assume there's no wifi support in the alpha, because I don't see any options, which means I'll probably just stick to fiddling with Tetris before I get into any of the bigger PS1 titles I wanted to play since I want to play those with RetroAchievements on. It was kind of a pain to even enter the information since any movement of the d-pad added a question mark to the text line for my username or password, meaning I had to constantly delete it as I moved across RetroArch's keyboard UI.

I investigated the H700 chip a little bit and it is fascinating, while it is not very powerful in general, it can do H.265/VP9/AVS2 4K@60fps decoding. It is probably because this chip was originally made for a projector and I guess they didn't sell too many projectors.

Ones implementing sticks along with the d-pad would be nice. I'm not likely to wait for them, though, and I don't like the look of vertical designs with sticks, at least not nearly as much as I like the RG35XX Plus, so I'm probably pretty set on what I want. But I guess there are a lot of more expensive options that fit my criteria and open up more gaming options, so if I ever decide to upgrade, I'll have plenty to choose from. I don't see it happening, though, because it's really the budget price that sells this for me. $50 for the base version and now this $70 all-around improvement makes it a pretty definitive sell. It's basically the cost of a modern triple A game, that's honestly a steal for a handheld with as many features as this. I mean I love Nintendo, their 3DS line of systems, and certainly they offer a lot of potential with their systems, but when that launched that was $250 and had no fucking games. This is a device you can easily install whatever you want on with great customizability right out of the box if you're willing to install custom firmware. There's simply no mistaking the value in comparison. It may not be a great option for 3DS games, though possibly it could play some, but up to PS1 and Dreamcast? Some N64? Great!

Hi, thanks for the video! :D Can I ask you a question? Do you know why does Garlic 2.0 for RG35XX PLUS have to be installed and used together with the SD with the stock system? (I read the procedure on Black's Patreon page on the Garlic 2.0 post) Can't just the SD (or single or double) be used only with Garlic as happens with Garlic 1.x.x in the original RG35XX? Because we know that the proprietary SD card is of poor quality and should be changed immediately. But if you need the proprietary SD to boot the SD with Garlic (as I understand), if that then gets corrupted, you won't be able to use the one with Garlic either..
@TakiUdon Жыл бұрын
The stock SD has a file that will tell the system to look for the operating system on the second SD card (the bootloader). That's why you need to have both. If you are worried about the stock SD being bad, you could clone it with something like Rufus or clonezilla and then flash that image to a better card.
@_marta30_44 Жыл бұрын
@@TakiUdon Thanks a lot for the answer! :D Yes, I understood the process, but so do you think it will remain like this, that is, with the use of the stock SD too? Do you think that in the future it will not be possible to use only the SD with Garlic as with the original RG35xx? Because if that were the case, yes, in that case it is better to clone the stock SD. But I was actually wondering why this time the boot process is like this compared to the original RG35XX which only needs the SD card with Garlic :)

I bought the new RG35XX+, but let me give a few personal opinions whether or not it's worth it. I'd recommend anyone that's using original RG35XX to install batocera on it (maybe on a secondary SD card) as the original RG35XX does run PSP, N64, and other titles using batocera. Granted it's not the best experience, and without multiplayer, but if you wanted to play N64, PSP, and other emulators that weren't offered on original RG35XX or GarlicOS, that would be the cheaper alternative.

If this had analog sticks I'd buy it. It kinda kills the portability if I need to carry around a controller just for that. I'll stick with my R36S simply for that reason. As I'm on the road (the main reason I use these portables), wifi isn't a priority but I do have the dongle set up and working for the very rare times I need it. Finally, HDMI is nice...but again defeats the reason for a portable in the first place. At the end of the day, it'll boil down to what you are actually buying these handhelds for in the first place. If you're mainly a home based retro player, these really aren't ideal for that and there are MUCH better options of course. If you travel and or want something to play with during your lunch hour these are optimal, and for me the R36S is the best for it, for now. Good review, well laid out and very well explained.

I used to own quite a few LG phones back in the day. One of their gimmicks, and one I really liked, was putting the power, fingerprint reader, and volume controls on the back. Looking at this RG35XX Plus; had they decided on putting Start, Select, and Menu on the back in a configuration like an old LG phone, that would've freed up enough space on the front for one, or possibly even two sticks, without increasing the device's footprint. Assuming that this unit has enough room inside to repack everything around the addition of a stick(s). The Xperia Play phone had a glorified touchpad instead of a stick. For packaging reasons; something like that might be worth implementing, either on the front or back of this, instead of sticks. Deck users love their touchpads on the front and the Vita had that touchpad on the rear. I skipped the Vita for reasons that made sense at the time. Did anyone or any game ever use it for analog inputs, ever?

Since it's not inside the walls and many don't have fuses, you can draw more power than the cord itself is rated for and in some cases depending on materials even cause the cord's coating to combust once it gets hot enough. :3

Till this day i did not manage to get wifi running on the Plus. All updates till July 2024 did not bring any changes.

Bought mine today (July of 2024) for $58, including shipping and a protection bag. There will be some administrative duty fees unfortunately - shipped from USA to Sweden - but it’s a good price,.. 👍

Now I'm really considering geting this! Thanks for your thorough review. Btw, what portable screen is that you used to test out the HDMI out...? I'm looking for a portable display just like that size. Thanks!

Probly should say that the RG35XX has GPU BUT it's unused from the moment you flash an alternative to the stock OS. Closed kernel, no access to GPU. Still, Garlic works beautifully and runs everything up to PS1 with decent performance.

Thanks for covering this - great video as always! One thing which would be interesting to me if the buttons feel the same as the original 35XX (except from the slightly changed form) ... as in did they use the same rubber dome as before, because I personal find the to be phenomenal! Could you please verify if they've gone with the same ones or not?

Rubber feels the same on all of the front buttons.

@@TakiUdonThanks! Do the back buttons also have the same nice defined actuation as the 35xx or did they change their rubber along with changing the plastic parts?

Thank you for all this content Taki. Been watching your videos for a long time, and I'm about to finally get one of these. Just one question : any "buzzing" sound while using headphones on the RG35XX ? I was about to get the RG353V and heard about these sound issues, so I worry a bit about this. I would also love to use some airpods with this, hope it gets fixed soon !
@TakiUdon Жыл бұрын
No buzzing sounds. Even though I did audio output for this video, I just tested with some AT headphones and there is no noise.

I now the U.S. has a lot to worry about with China but godamn I just love the fact that they are technologically adevanced and they have low regulations as regards to cloning and whatnot. As gamers and electronic nerds we benefit from that society's offerings.

I can understand the reason for not having a PD charging.. Its a licensed product that would run up costs of production as well the end user..

Hello @TakiUdon, since it has OTG support, does it support the external device through the OTG? Quickest example is Audio Dongle (External soundcard) that produce sound. Took some device sample such as SHIO Truthear, Creative Sound Blaster, Jcally dongle dac etc. I also use my RG35XX for listening to music but the sound produce is not strong enough or not supporting my IEM (in-ear monitor earphone) driver.

I’m so glad I didn’t get the xu10,. Goes to show that just because it’s more expensive does not mean it’s better. Plus it’s not even anbernics product, they just list it for an affiliate

I’ve been trying to find out everywhere if Garlic was worth it. I had no idea how new the Plus was when I ordered one, it was recommended to me by a friend, but I’m loving it so far. My only issue is that stock os runs PlayStation games so much better than retroarch right now, which isn’t a problem but I cant or don’t know how to make extra memory cards

Is this worth buying over the R36s? Price vs performance
@arvintrevino4622 Жыл бұрын
I've been thinking of a hand held that can play a good amount of retro and maybe some modern. I hear the RG35XX is good, but I've heard the RG35XX plus is better. I don't mind buying a BT controller on the side. The R 36S looks like it has a bad screen image. Meanwhile RG35XX plus looks like it has more quality. I've been wondering of possibly changing the OS in yhe future after some good time with it to ArkOS with the new version of Batocera. When I saw other YT reviewers the N64 was crisp sound similar to the console. Do you think the RG35XX plus would be a good investment as the first handheld? Its not my first time messing with emulators. The first GBA emulator I played on was on Windows 2000 years ago.
