It is so encouraging to see recognition of the neurological mechanics of function cardiovascular disorders. Next up for examination should be the classic panic attack (a good example of this can be seen on a video here entitled "Leah has a Panic Attack" - woman number 2 in the white top). You see nausea, profuse persperation, increased heart rate, increase in blood pressure, difficulty breathing, limbs becoming cold and weak, sometimes a stiffening of the hands, etc. The increase of co2 in the lungs is often explained by hyperventilation, but I am not entirely convinced. This is a pretty significant physical event - if you notice woman number 2, once she is on the floor, is not yelling about the jump, she is afraid of what is happening to her body. If you look at these people you also see an increase in other cardiovascular disorders. This is usually looked at as a psychological issue, but like takotsubo, the psychological element is only the trigger. Woman number 1 in the video I mentioned above is also experiencing a great deal of fear, but her brain does not trigger the same physiological response (there are some similarities of course, and I think this is what causes confusion between the two). In any case, research in the area of neurocardiovascular medicine is very exciting and might prove to be a significant contribution to human health.
