Our final episode in this series chronicles the painting and weathering of our recently built Takom Stug. The video explores many craft techniques and materials which help to add realism and visual impact to scale models.
The Takom kit is fun to build. Worry-free and no-frills. Excellent detail, modern kit features, superb engineering and fit, all at a reasonable price - everything a scale modeler looks for! We get one nice looking Stug 3 in the box which can only get better with aftermarket stowage and figure.

Hi MTS! Nice to hear from you and thank you for the encouraging words. I've been focusing a little more on a music hobby I have so sadly the models have been neglected lately. However, the call of the plastic beckons and the Jagdpanther I'm working on is screaming out for paint. But notes like yours are inspirational and motivating so we'll get back to the models very soon. Stay well and good luck with your own projects!

Well done with the weathering. A little constructive tip nonetheless. The weald bead doesn't rust due to the characteristics of the mixture obtained after the two metals have been welded.

Interesting fact and thanks for the input - reminds me how informed and observant my fellow KZbinrs are! I'm using a new tube of burnt umber and it renders a bit darker than I would like and it had kind of a weird effect on the base yellow on this build. I'll remember your tip on the next build and good luck with your own projects!

Hi Steve, nice to hear from you! Glad you enjoyed the video. The model turned out nice. I wanted to do some camo but my aging airbrush just didn't want to give me fine lines. I could have used masks but the video was already way over schedule for posting so I settled on the one colour. Had to work hard at it to make it look interesting. Thanks again for the support - it's very inspiring.

The interior of StuG. III are painted RAL 1001 Elfenbein, (Ivory White) when not visible from outside or above. Doors or hatch covers are painted to match the primary exterior color, usually RAL-7009 Gray-Green before 1943 or Dark-Yellow RAL-7028 after 1942. Power train and electrical parts were shades of dark gray

Hi friend, What psi do you usually operate at for most applications… and in this video like the Dark Yellow (XF-60 plus XF-88 acrylic paint) after the XF-1 Flat Black enamel paint? Thanks! 😅
@stevieRay3211

Hey Silvestersze, airbrush pressure varies from 20+psi if I'm spraying a large area, like applying a base coat, to 12psi or less if I'm detail painting when the brush is very close to the surface. There are so many factors that it's best to find the pressure that works best for your circumstances. For the base or "primer" coat you can use anything. I like enamel since its durable but the greenies are taking away our enamel paints so using an acrylic or hybrid acrylic (Tamiya) works fine. Tamiya's grey primer that comes in the spray can is excellent but expensive. But many manufacturers make "primers" so select one that works best for you.

@@stevieRay3211 Thank you, Tomas. You’re my good teacher. I got it and will start at this settings here as a reference starting point. Yes, it’s not easy to acquire enamel paints in the US like it was used be in the 70’s. Back in the days, there were no acrylic, but enamel paint and lacquer spray paint only I remember. Sometimes I ordered those from Japan on eBay, but took a long time to receive. I use Tamiya Fine Primer and Oxide Red. Yes, they’re so expensive. I just use them conservatively.

Do you seal like after you apply oils before you add the rust oils??
@stevieRay3211
@stevieRay3211 Жыл бұрын
Clear coat before the oils. We seal the acrylic base coat and decals with the clear. The smooth finish lets the oils flow when applying pin wash and protects the base colour from our other weathering. Thanks for the comment!

I found a piece of tiny dust under the base coat or under the primer after painting. How would I fix this issue? I thought I was carefully enough. Thanks. 😅
@stevieRay3211
@stevieRay3211 4 ай бұрын
I've never encountered that problem before. If it's a small spot you can gently scrape and/or sand the area until smooth then re-paint the bare spot. You can also remove the paint using a lacquer thinner on a cotton bud. If it's all over the model, not sure what to do. I don't want to give you bad advice that could ruin the model. I have stripped the paint off an entire model before and repainted, but that's pretty epic. Sometime we just have to live with a few dust spots and vow to do better on our next project!
@silvestersze9968
@silvestersze9968 4 ай бұрын
@@stevieRay3211 Thank you, Tomas. This’s a great piece of advice for the solution. Pretty much same way of what I think you’ve mentioned in scraping and/or sanding. But I’m not confident enough to use lacquer thinner removing the paint with a cotton bud then re-paint ‘the spot’ again method yet. Maybe I’ll try that in the future. Yes, I agree that sometimes we’ve to live with things in imperfect condition(s), nothing is perfect in the world. But learning from mistakes can improve modeling skills. 🍾🥂

Do you use dull coat at the end?
@stevieRay3211
@stevieRay3211 Жыл бұрын
Yes but use it sparingly, just enough to knock down any shiny parts. Using too much will flatten the paint job and ruin your shading, highlights and shadows.

Sorry I don't speak Czech, but, technically you're right, the chips should have a primer red border but the light cream colour makes them stand out better. Omlouvám se, že nemluvím česky, ale technicky máte pravdu, hranolky by měly mít základní červený okraj, ale světle krémová barva je lépe vynikne.

Christ where to start . Barrels were primed grey not red, nothing was bare metal, hatch interiors werent white. Your wirecutter handles are wrong, but everybody gets that wrong. I have a whole video just on wirecutters. This info is out there. You just have to look for it.

If you're going to get scolded, no one better than AM! I'm a big fan, use to watch your Tiger videos. The ride in the Hetzer was pretty cool too. I know about the hatches, I was going to batten them down but decided to leave things unbuttoned and was too lazy to get the airbrush out again to make the correction. Sorry, I can't resist the graphite pencil. I'll take your word on the barrel colour standard, but my story is that wartime conditions for the Germans meant things didn't always go according to plan - and I'm sticking to it. I appreciate that you took the time. I'm almost afraid to check comments on the other videos. 🥴

Besides, where else can I go to get advanced lessons on panzer tools?😃 (Not kidding, I'm actually interested in those sorts of things.) Sadly no Tiger builds in the immediate future on the show - at the moment the kits are a bit epic when life interferes - but when it's time, I'll have to check in with you to make sure we stay honest. All the best, and hopefully you'll find time for video-making sometime soon yourself - more tank rides please!!
