James Kalm makes his first visit to Midtown since the “lockdown”, and brings viewers along for a stroll through of a juicy painting exhibition by one of today’s most recognized Neo-Expressionists Tal R (with bonus round run-throughs of Aliza Nisenbaum and, Chris Martin).
Your correspondent has been watching the development of Tal R for some time now, but this is the first selection of sculpture he’s displayed here in New York. With a witty mingling of Picasso, classic Hellenistic subjects and slacker street fashion, this group of works is a tasty addition to the warm, exuberant, child-like, flower paintings.
Aliza Nisenbaum presents a series paired water color floral and portrait sets. These bright and delicate pictures capture sitters in quotidian repose, and path-side plants and bouquets that are equally unselfconscious.
Finally, we’ll trip through a series of works on paper that Chris Martin has produced at his place in Upstate New York during the Covid 19 “lock-down”. A musical introduction is provided by Kas. This program was recorded September 22, 2020. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmrpughcuts #contemporaryart

Thanks for this as always. The story about Chris Martin and Tal R geeking out on each other was great...I guess you just gotta say, "game recognizes game, joy recognizes joy."

It is a-okay to wear a face-mask during the corona-pandemic or during the flue-season. It is responsible behaviour. You are an ideal raw model, a guiding star! Great video of an interesting exhibition again. Thank you Kate!

A Paint-head paradise! Thank you James! All 3 artist's in this vlog had floral imagery, perhaps a sign of hope & new beginnings in these pandemic times. Your stories always add a another layer of insight about the art we are seeing. Tal R's sculptures were a nice complement to the textures of his paintings & what a palette! The smaller Chris Martin works gave a nice intimate experience of his paint handling. As always, thank you Kate!

Thank you, as always. Just one point: Paula Modersohn-Becker died in 1907, two years before Der Blaue Reiter was founded. Kandinsky founded Der Blaue Reiter with, amongst others, Gabriele Münter, who was an interesting painter herself, and who was a long time partner of Kandinsky.

I really enjoyed this video!! Love to hear the stories you tell. Also, it is so comforting to know that you have met many of the artists over the years or that you are, at least, familiar with their works. Your videos and commentaries really please many of us on the west coast (WA for me). THANKS so very much, Loren and Kate, for another wonderful uplifting informative video!!!!!

I really love Tal’s oil paintings, better than the distemper paintings. They are luscious and Full of rich color and layered texture. I also liked Aliza’s portraits; the color reminds me of Judith Linhares

Another fine video, James. I’ve missed seeing your vids during the lockdown. Liked the Tal R. paintings and sculpture and C. Martin but the other artist, just meh for me. Keep up the good work. On a side note how long does it take you to ride the bike from your place in Brooklyn to midtown? Cheers.

Thanks @George McKim, for the kind words. Regarding travel time between Red Hook Brooklyn and Midtown, it's about 45 -60 minutes depending on traffic, weather, and how far north I need to go...

I feel like Tal is painting the chunky stuff underneath via distemper, then painting oil on top. Distemper gets very chunky it's cooling off...he does not blend his colors, just side by side, as distemper is usually done.
